Das Ähnliche doch nicht Gleiche
Ein explosives Motiv durchwandert die verschiedenen Instrumentengruppen. Ich höre das Flirren der Becken, die aufrauschende Dynamik der Hi-Hat, dann mischt sich mit feinen Synkopen die Bassdrum ein. Geduldig bau Kush Aba¬dey ein Universum gegensätzlichen Klangwelten auf, zusammengehalten von einem motivischen Kern. Diesen kann ich als Grundfigur erkennen, um dann, anhand seiner Form, der allmählichen Verfertigung des Gedankens beim Spie¬len zu folgen, während der Musiker das Instrument erkundet.
Das anfängliche Motiv wird in beträchtlich ›alterierte‹ Formen abgewandelt, nicht mathematisch, sondern musikalisch - Kush Abadey fügt es laufend in neue Groovekontexte ein. Ich erkenne es wieder, mehr an seiner energetischen Signatur als an der notierbaren Form. Während der Klangraum sich weitet, spüre ich, wie alles Gespielte innerlich zusammenhängt, wie eines aus dem an¬dern hervorgeht. Und doch könnte ich nicht benennen, was dieses Gemeinsa¬me ist.
Hier zeigt sich, wie das menschliche Gehirn Verwandtschaften wahrnehmen und in Wechselbeziehungen denken kann. Dies erinnert an die Erkennung von Gesichtern. Alle sind ähnlich, keines gleich. Die Menschen bilden eine grosse Familie aus Individuen, hervorgegangen aus der Kombinatorik der Gene. Wie das Gesichtermeer, so der Ozean der Klänge: Aus einem anfänglichen Muster entstehen Beziehungen: Kraftlinien, Evoluten, Meridiane…
Die Klangfamilie: Unter Kush Abadeys Händen etabliert sich eine Genealogie des Augenblicks, der Musik und der Spielstile. Das Gleichgewicht zwischen innerem Verlauf und äusserer Form - zwischen Impuls und Gestalt, Improvi-sation und Komposition, zwischen dem Linearen und dem Zirkulären - kann bei der ›Aushandlung‹ verfolgt werden. Ich erlebe, wie sich aus Setzungen des Anfangs Flächen und Teppiche ergeben, wie der Erfindergeist weht und die Hände ihm mühelos folgen. Ich höre ein erzählerisches Prinzip: wie aus dem Einen des Anfangs das Viele der Geschichte(n) entsteht.

The similar but not the same
An explosive motif roams through the various instrument groups. I hear the shimmering of the cymbals, the surging dynamics of the hi-hat, then the bass drum joins in with subtle syncopations. Kush Abadey patiently builds up a universe of contrasting soundscapes, held together by a motivic core. I can recognise this as a core figure and then, based on its form, follow the gradual development of the idea in the process of the playing, as the musician explores the instrument.
The initial motif is transformed into considerably 'altered' forms, not mathematically but musically - Kush Abadey constantly morphs it into new groove contexts. I recognise it, more by its signature energy than by its notatable form. As the sound space expands, I sense how everything played is internally connected, how one arises from the other. And yet I could not name what they have in common.
This shows how the human brain can perceive relationships and think in terms of interrelationships. This is reminiscent of recognising faces. All are similar, none are the same. Humans form a large family of individuals, resulting from the combinatorics of genes. Like the sea of faces, so the ocean of sounds: relationships emerge from an initial pattern: Lines of force, evolutes, meridians...
The sound family: In Kush Abadey's hands, a genealogy of the moment, of music and playing styles is established. I become witness to the “negotiation” of the balance between inner flow and outer form - between impulse and shape, improvisation and composition, between the linear and the circular. I experience how soundscapes and tapestries of sound emerge from the initial choices, how the spirit of invention blows and the hands follow it effortlessly. I hear a narrative principle: how the many stories emerge from the one beginning.
