The spirit of things
Imagine a pianist who finds a piano with newly arranged keys, to which all unknown sounds are assigned. Now he will hardly be able to fall back on his practiced mechanisms; trial and error are required. It is all the more astonishing to experience the naturalness with which Antonio Sanchez coaxes his music from an instrument that has yet to be discovered, which leads from simple basic patterns to the most complex overlays. Apparently effortlessly, he finds a common thread along which the story unfolds. He deviates and returns, he changes paces and yet remains true to a basic movement, a unité de doctrine, a narrative arc that will only end far out in the blossoming desert, because he never runs out of fuel, rhythmic ideas. It is explosive and multifaceted - the longer this excursion into sound and rhythm lasts, the more I give myself over to my orchestral fantasies and forget that 'only' one person is playing here.
Antonio Sanchez makes storytelling tangible as the driving force of human communication. He seems to transport me to the African village, where the drums create a connection to the gods. And I begin to believe again in the compatibility of modern life with animism, this sense of the spirit of things. Antonio Sanchez lets this spirit speak in the many 'things' that make up the drum kit.
Der Geist der Dinge
Man stelle sich einen Pianisten vor, der ein Klavier mit neu ange¬ordneten Tasten vorfindet, denen lauter unbekannte Klänge zuge¬ordnet sind. Nun wird er kaum auf seine eingeübten Mechanismen zurückgreifen können, gefragt sind trial and error. Umso verblüffen¬der zu erleben, mit welcher Selbstverständlichkeit Antonio Sanchez einem erst noch zu entdeckenden Instrument seine Musik entlockt, die aus schlichten Grundmustern in die komplexesten Überlagerun¬gen führt. Scheinbar anstrengungslos findet er einen roten Faden, an dem sich die Erzählung entspinnt. Er weicht ab und kehrt zurück, er wandelt die Gangarten und bleibt doch einer Grundbewegung, einer Unité de doctrine treu, ein erzählerischer Bogen, der erst weit draus¬sen in der blühenden Wüste enden wird, da ihm niemals der Sprit, die rhythmischen Einfälle ausgeht. Das ist, explosiv und vielgestaltig - je länger diese Exkursion in Klang und Rhythmus dauert, desto mehr überlasse ich mich meinen orchestralen Fantasien und vergesse, dass hier ›nur‹ einer spielt.
Antonio Sanchez macht das Storytelling als driving force mensch¬licher Kommunikationen spürbar. Er scheint mich ins afrikanische Dorf zu versetzen, wo die Trommeln eine Verbindung zu den Göttern schaffen. Und ich beginne wieder an die Vereinbarkeit des modernen Lebens mit dem Animismus zu glauben, diesem Sinn für den Geist der Dinge. Antonio Sanchez lässt diesen Geist in den vielen ›Dingen‹ sprechen, aus denen das vorgefundene Schlagzeug besteht.
