Flying at 10,000 feet - The Wind is Too Strong pt2of2
10,000 Feet - WOW the view.
This is what the world looks like from 10,000 feet, quite beautiful but isolating - appropriate for these times I suppose.
Now for the descent from 10,000feet.
Again assuming no wind here are my flight calculations.
We need to arrive under the 8,500 feet step, so I will need to commence my glide at a certain distance from it.
Over the center of Fraser Island is as close as I can get to Maryborough airport at a distance of 20 nm.
My best glide speed Vx is 55 knots, with a descent rate of 600 fpm.
Calculating the results;
Every minute of 600 feet descent I will travel horizontally 55nm/60min = 0.9nm per minute.
From 10,000 feet I can travel 10,000/600 = 17 minutes x 0.9nm. Answer: 15nm. I can't make it.
If I have a 20 knot tail wind;
I will travel 75nm/60min = 1.25nm x 17minutes = 21.35nm.
This will be close - I Will NEED a good Tailwind!
So what happened.......
Turned out as expected by calculations.
I have seen tests showing that if my engine was completely stopped I would have had less drag and a better glide range. Not sure though how much that would have helped me here. At least I got to terra firma.
So as you can see - a headwind was not helpful, but the earlier calculations already told us the full story.
Stay safe and KNOW your glide range. Don't risk an engine out with no where to land.
