After a few weeks of driving I'm finally ready to give my opinion of KYB's Gas A Just Shock and the ExcelG shock. I ran the Gas-A-Just shocks for about a thousand miles and then decided to swap over to the ExcelG.
The reason why I switched was because with my car, it was much lighter than stock and the stiffness of the Gas-A-Just was too much for the bumpy roads out where I live. In this video I walk through the decision criteria I would go through when making a decision between these two shocks (or any high pressure and low pressure shock).

I have an suspension guy that specializes in older cars and muscle cars. I did something a little different on his suggestion and have been well pleased. KYB gas adjust on the front, and the KYB ExcelG on the rear of my 85 Monte Carlo SS. I still have a comfortable ride while not having the body roll, that most Gbodies normally have on stock shocks.

I have a 1969 mach one 351 W. It was originally a 390 cid. I had Koni reds on it after I rebuilt the suspension in the late 1980's. I have done a rethink on the suspension as I am going to get rid of the original steering setup and go with rack and pinion. I think at least the small block Mustang that have subframe connectors and the export brace could go with a softer spring rate! Modern gas charged shocks, modern radial tires polymer suspension bushings have really changed the game of what will be needed to get good handling and a decent ride.

Great News! Found a place, local, tucked away that does restoration work. Dude has several classics in various stages of finish and it all looks solid. Found him through other hobby guys that told me he was the man. Cars going in tonight and tomorrow I’m starting to haul all the pieces over. Best part is he does it all and since the body is done it’s all assembly at this point. I’m so happy I’m sure you get it but it was frustrating the hell out of me not finding anyone with space or the workers to get it done. Hey just found your channel and I think your channel will grow a lot in the next few months. I feel like you were kind of sick in this video thats why you seemed a little low energy at times. But i think it would be more helpful if you can be more concise with your explanations. Try to clarify what shocks you are currently using and how it feels, then try some pros and cons then do comparisons to sum things up. Throughout the video you’re kind of going back and forth with different thoughts and while those are your reactions, it’s hard for the viewer to keep up. Thanks, you just talked me out of the Gas A Just shocks I was going to put in my Jeep Wrangler. I'm tired of the front end feeling like someone's hitting it with a sledge hammer just because I'm pulling into a parking lot at normal speed. It's currently got Rancho shocks and I think some of the issue is the front shocks are for a 2.5" lift when I have no lift and it may be bottoming them. They ride fine other than potholes and mini curbs into parking lots. But if I want smoother, I think the ExcelG are probably going to make me happiest. I have Bilstein 4600 on my 1989 Chevy Silverado and it rides pretty rough for what it is. Back when I was younger I liked a Bilstein on my Volvo 240s that we autocrossed with, but they rode rougher than something like a factory replacement Sachs shock. With my Jeep I don't offroad it and I can live with a bit of body roll if it means the fillings don't fall out of my teeth when entering a parking lot, so I think you just helped me make up my mind.
@SmackeysGarage
@SmackeysGarage Жыл бұрын
I'm sure you will enjoy the ExcelG shocks. They will definitely help smooth things out. I was shocked at how much of a difference I was feeling in my car. It didn't go to the point where there was a ton of body roll but it just felt better and smoother. I'm similar.. I liked the stiff stocks back on my 1994 Mustang for corners and auto crossing but I won't be using them on a daily car again. Also, love those Volvo 240s. Enjoy them on your Jeep!
@421CentralIowa
@421CentralIowa Жыл бұрын
@@SmackeysGarage So far the only negative is on wavy pavement the jeep gets bouncy. Otherwise, everything else is an improvement. My front shocks from the previous owner were 4" too long, which was the whole problem. The Rancho shocks rode great as long as you didn't need to compress more than 2", at which point it was metal on metal. Meanwhile, I had like 10" of rebound, ha! These are going to work for my needs, but I question if I'd liked the Gas A Just or the Bilstein 5100 just because the Wrangler is heavy enough to maybe beat them into submission vs the other way around.

They ride similar to OE shocks. I have never run hydraulic shocks, but if I was in your position I would call KYB / Kona / Bilstein and ask for their recommendation if that is what you are looking for. I've found many of the suspension companies are just looking to help you out finding what you want rather than just selling you their product.

@Smackeysgarage do u have any idea, why KYB doesn’t make gas-a-just monotube shocks and struts for economy cars? Like for my 2015 Scion xB. They only offer KYB - Excel-G shocks and struts. Which is a great oem replacement. But what if someone like us wants to remain the same stock ride height with better performance like Gas-A-Just? Any thoughts about that?
@SmackeysGarage
@SmackeysGarage Жыл бұрын
Hey Toyota Brony, I don't really know. My guess is the demand for that specific car isn't there for a next level performance shock. I took a quick look and couldn't find anything really available to do that. Even all the coil overs are drop only. None at the stock height. You could do the lowering coil over and then add a coiler spacer above it to get the room you need. I'd see if anyone else is running a setup on that on the car. I'm not familiar with it.

Of course. Your set up sounds similar to mine. I'm running a 390, Hooker LT Headers, through a pypes 2.5" exhaust front to back. Why not change out the mufflers rather then add the glasspacks? I originally had Pypes StreetPro on my car and it was WAY too loud. I then switched over to the same size/shape RacePro and they were significantly quieter. It made driving the car much better. (Mine is still loud though) Are you open to swapping out the flowmaster 40s for something else?

@@SmackeysGarage maybe, kinda, I don't know lol. I do like the sound at idle and WOT but it's the cruising at 2500 and up RPMs it's real loud. I've always heard that resonators can quiet down drone at cruising speeds. I figure it would also take it down a little bit at all other times. If I do decide to keep the flowmasters and go resonators worst case scenario would be I cut the resonators out and go with a different muffler. I already have a joint for the h-pipe and before the axle over so I could just replace that whole piece so I don't have a bunch of weld seams. At any rate we had puppies 8 days ago so I won't be doing much of anything on the car for another 7 weeks lol.
