NASCAR champ Kyle Busch looks back on his forced departure from Hendrick Motorsports at the end of the 2007 season, including a disruption in communication after the 2004 death of Ricky Hendricks and a long conversation with Jeff Gordon that made its way back to team owner, Rick Hendrick. Later, JGR team owner Joe Gibbs joins the conversation to share his methods for recruiting Busch, and Busch shares why he agreed to sign with Gibbs and JGR, even though it wasn’t the highest paying offer.

Kyle has his moments, but as an old Earnhardt Sr. fan, I see one thing in Kyle that you don't see with a lot of drivers. Dale Sr. had it and Kyle has it. Dale Sr. hated losing more than he loved winning and so does Kyle.

@@dr.jackkevorkian1119 I'm a JR fan so I was rooting for Bowman, Chase, and Byron but I'm a fan of all the new drivers (though I don't watch the race anymore.. I still pay attention to the sport) Larson is at HMS and I loved him in the 42, but for the unfortunate reasons we all know of I don't root for him. I'd say he was almost my new favorite driver and I tried to be unbiased but I hope he fails now (truly sadly, I tried!) You make a great point about Gibbs! They are my most hated team because they've always been consistent! (Hated Stewart because he was a beast in '04 (well, 05) when I started watching racing. Love the addition of Christopher Bell for them, definitely looks to be a driver and definitely new blood for me to root against lol. Hendrick and Penske taught the Busch brothers a valuable lesson. You can be replaced. Kyle said it himself he thought his career was over, and even though being a Busch fan has been bumpy a long the way I am glad to see both are still in competitive equipment and seem to have better outlooks on life. Kyle was lucky he didn't end up driving a shoe box for a year or two like Kurt ended up doing.
@slysupersonic
@slysupersonic 3 жыл бұрын
While I agree with what your basic message is. I think for Kyle is was more Toyota and Gibbs that taught him that. Rick Hendrick didn't really do much for Kyle. If you can remember Kyle said earlier that there wasn't much of a support system for him at HMS and Chevrolet. He was more or less left by everyone to do it all on his own. That's honestly the reason why I don't think I'll ever become an HMS fan. I don't think I like the way that team deals with drivers that aren't complete angels. HMS has always had a High and Mighty feel to them that I will never like.
@hotspur5621

@@slysupersonic Gibbs was huge for him as a mentor and the helping hand to keep him on the right track. You're definitely right about that... Just giving some indirect credit to the two owner's that showed the Busch brothers that no matter the talent, you can be replaced. Had to mean something going into their new ride's knowing they might not get another chance as good as the #18 and the #41 for Kurt. (After driving that POS Phoenix car for a year, Kurt turned into an angel. lol)
@slysupersonic
@slysupersonic 3 жыл бұрын
@@hotspur5621 Not really for Kurt though. He had his moments at SHR. But those moments were ok. I was scared that after everything that happened to him after Penske kicked him out, Kurt would forget who he is and try to pretend to be something he is not just so he could get a ride again. (Kiss Ass) I'm glad that didn't happen. As Kurt's younger brother would say: "I'd rather be hated for who I am than be loved for someone I'm not." I always liked Kurt, and glad he still has that classic Kurt Busch act still in him. He just culled it back a little bit.

@@slysupersonic not really. Rick always changing when it’s not working for his workers, drivers, Crews. Kyle wasn’t working so he let him go. I was surprised he kept Dale jr for longer. When he wasn’t doing good. I guess for marketing. 🤷🏼‍♂️
@slysupersonic
@slysupersonic 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrZrazies Kyle Busch didn't fit the mold of a driver that Hendrick Motorsports was looking for. Kyle had the talent but because he wasn't as clean cut or as "perfect" as his then teammates he was let go. Joe Gibbs Racing is much different in that way. Over there, the priorities are in a different order. For JGR the most important thing is your on-track performance. You can sell all the merchandise you want and be as popular with the fans as you want. But if you don't perform in a Gibbs car, your ass is fired. Winning comes 1st at JGR. Gibbs doesn't care about how that might look to the fans, media or other teams/drivers. It's either you bring Joe the trophy or bring back the steering wheel. That whole win or die attitude at JGR goes back to Joe's days as a Superbowl winning head coach in the NFL. That attitude is why Kyle fits in well with JGR. All Kyle Busch cares about is winning.

I have a question. When a owner is going for the owner year end championship and has 4 teams, is it like a race horse owner that has 4 horses going for the Triple Crown, if an owners 1 horse wins the Kentucky Derby, he's going to make absolutely sure 1 of his other horses does not win the Belmont.

HMS: 6 titles Kyle and JGR: 2 titles I think HMS still won that deal. 5 titles for Jimmie, and one for Chase. 2 for Kyle, but he has had 4 different crew chiefs now at JGR, while HMS kept mostly the same crew chiefs over that time, so HMS retained talent at engineer and crew chief, as has Gibbs.

I wish Kyle could have stayed with Hendrick. Rick Hendrick just got tired of Kyle tearing up his equipment and he started distancing himself from what a Hendrick driver should be. It's a shame he got let go. I really liked him on the team, he has amazing talent but I wish that he could have gone about things a different way and Kyle could have stayed there. It's one of things that I don't really care for Kyle for, he couldn't make it work at Hendrick and then he goes somewhere else and out-classes his replacement Dale Earnhardt Jr. by miles. But I also am angry with Hendrick for letting a talent like Kyle go.

Yep I’m also a big HMS fan but I also feel that Kyle is one of the best NASCAR drivers out there that goes without all the due credit deserved. Yea he’s got a hot head but I think it’s been obvious how that has changed over time by the maturity of marriage and becoming a father. As a driver he’s aggressive, highly aware of his cars limits and drives it to its max, he’s knowledgeable of every tactic, and knows what his competitors moves are going to be to make his block or move at the right time. You can observe the feelings and compassion he has in his past interviews, human traits not covered by the media.
