Flight test of my Laser 160V Calmato 60
Special feature: Backfiring during idle in fast downward passages. I love that sound.
Bonus scene: Dead-Stick landing due to empty fuel tank. Timecode: 4:44
Prop:Graupner Super Nylon 16x8
Fuel: 8% Synth 12% Castor 10% Nitro (estimated as this is a mixed "Cellar-Blend")
Glow plugs: OS "F" used but in good condition. I change to new plugs after run in
Engine: The allmighty Laser 160V with Laser radial mount. No exhaust pressure, no electric starter, no chicken stick required.
Tank: Original tank provided with the model. 2 sinter clunks and one vent line.
Model: Calmato 60 Sports 1st Generation (classic bullet proof design for combustion engines)
The carburetors are way to high related to the tank centerline. The engine runs very well but inverted flight leads to rpm loss due to superrich mixture. I intend to use the model just for mild aerobatics and enjoying the engine so this won't be a Problem for me. Usually Laser engines run very well inverted which technically would be the better way to install it into this model but I want to see my engine. In warbirds and other scale models the uncritical inverted behavior of the Laser engines makes them the perfect choice to hide them under the cowl.
This engine doesn't need any idle glow or remote glow system whatsoever. It will detoriate the perfect running caracteristics. The engine is designed to use zero Nitro. My 10% are the highest content recommended by the manufacturer. More will damage the engine I suppose. It runs the same way with superreliable idle if the fuel has 0% nitro. Only the maximum rpm will be a little bit lower.
Thje perfect fuel is 15% high quality Synthetic oil and 5% nitro.
The Calmato Sports 60 1st Gen. is a classic Trainer made of wood. The model is very sturdy like all late 90ies to early 2k glow-model designs. The build quality is very good. It's flying characteristics allow a safe operation and help to protect the engine if it needs to be landed under difficult circumstances. As the model is reported to be ridiculously tail-heavy if normal 60-91 engines are used I hoped to get the CG right with this heavy (1300g) engine.
What did I change in order to adapt the 60-sized trainer to a 160 4-stroke V-engine.
- Elevator and rudder servos installed in the tail.
- 2k paint on fuselage and wing
- Separate nose wheel steering servo
- new and more stable nose gear
- Tank modified to work with the Laser. 2 sinter clunks, one vent line The tank is smaller than recommended but ok for 8-10 minutes flying.
- Removed all nose gear and engine mount nuts as both are exchanged with different parts
- removed the side plates on the firewall (need space for the V2 heads)
- 24h epoxy and 2k paint used to seal the wood from fuel and oil
- Servo linkages for primary flight control surfaces reinforced with carbon rods
RC components:
RC: Spektrum DX18 1st Gen. Firmware 1.11 (10mW Euro)
Receiver FSY F701 DSMX (original Spektrum receivers do not work for me)
Elevator JR/Graupner C9021
Rudder JR/Graupner C3621
Ailerons Hitec HS225
Throttle JR/Graupner C508
Nose Steering Hitec HS311
If you have any questions regarding the engine or plane please comment I will answer as quick as possible.

This is fabulous thanks... Found your channel via your twin stick as I was looking for twin O.S 40 designs... I'm building a twin so your channel has been inspiring. Thanks for sharing these great videos. 👍🏾🙂

I would say it has enough power! The deadstick landing is a nice bonus. Great job!

Nice flying plane lands slow great sound. I thought it might be a bit too heavy for a 60 size plane until I saw it fly. Changes my mind about engine size for some of my planes. Awesome

Take care about the vibrations. This 160V just vibrates like the single Laser 80 which is a very smooth engine for it's displacement and power output. A single cylinder engine of 160 size may cause more fatigue effects on the structure of the model.

A lot of power for that small plane... good job with fuel starvation !.. 👍

Was it difficult balancing the plane with the added weight of the engine? Did you move the battery further back etc? Thanks.

As the plane is known of being very tail-heavy the large engine was more a solution than a problem to be solved. I installed the elevator and rudder servos in the tail and the battery is placed just behind the trailing edge. That was it.

I'm thinking of buying this plane. I have a spare os 61fx engine. Would you recommend it? Does it have any weakness? Would be glad of your help?

The model I equipped with the V2 engine is the older "non Alpha" version. The new "Alpha" version has some features that make it easier to transport and use electric power. Both fly great and can handle heavy and powerful engines. The Alpha should be reenforced on critical spots especially on the front end and firewall if a combustion engine is used. The 61FX is ok for both and will make it a very mild and enjoyable trainer. I recommend to seal all surfaces with 2k clearcoat. Otherwise the covering will peel off when in contact with fuel or exhaust residue.

Just finished building this plane with an OS .65 in it, maiden today but must say the .65 looks too small, two sinkers in the front to balance
