I still remember seeing that when I was 7 and it stuck out to me as weird then. I didn't know what it was, but I definitely couldn't figure out how it could be a jelly donut.

So much delicious variety! It's amazing how sometimes small differences in the rice, the seasoning, and/or the ingredients can make such a big difference in flavor. Thank you, Shinichi and Satoshi, for taking us on this Kyoto onigiri adventure. 💙💙

A couple of months ago I sat on the river in Kyoto eating onigiri and those huge Kite Falcon looking birds swooped down, smacked me in the back of the head with his wing and stole my onigiri right out of my hand. Be careful! Eating under the bridge is definitely recommended!

Onigiri been my favorite treat and snack since way back when NYC WTC twin towers had a shop in the concourse when I would grab and go to the subway in college. Japanese memories from NYC .. very unusual but real and true. NYC is the world's little get together ❤️ I miss the place and the food. I Now expanded my Japanese food tastes so much more. Onigiri always stays special ❤️

I live in Arkansas in the US. When I was young we had no access to ANYTHING even remotely Japanese. If I had known we'd have several Japanese restaurants in my town when I grew up, I would've been so excited. Now though, all I want is to try the different onigiri I still don't have access to! Always wanting what we can't have!

Learning about Japanese rice now. It's amazing that, in some cases, the farmer's name is even on the rice. We split our time between Japanese rice and Thai Jasmine rice and I appreciate the artisan approach that the Japanese take to their rice. Their hard work and pride comes through in the quality and flavor of their rice. Currently working on a bag of Yumepirika rice from Hokkaido farmed by Eiki Mano- simply amazing, recommend you try it if you haven't already.

Hiii! Onigiri is sooooo natsukashi for me. It was always our road trip snack whenever we would travel as kids, and even now as adults, I find myself making onigiri bentos for our long road trips……. Okaka was and still is my favorite. Whereas I love umeboshi now as an adult, I couldn’t stand it as a child. Each and every one of those onigiri that you both had, looked mecha oishisou! I never thought to mix chirimen, yuzu, and sansho into an onigiri though. YUM! When we were kids, we always loved ajitsuke nori too! We would eat it straight out of the packaging. I bought spicy salmon onigiri yesterday. It’s quickly replacing mentaiko as my #2 favorite onigiri. Thank you for taking us along on your onigiri adventure in Kyoto. I can’t wait to see your vlog of Kiyomizu-Dera Temple. Brother Satoshi…..I’m loving your new glasses! Kakkoii desu ne! Take care both of you, ne! ❤❤

Loved that you sat by the Kamo River to eat your snack. It was my favourite place for taking a quiet lunch break - until that one time when it wasn't so quiet! Sitting on the steps I was enjoying a sushi take-away when I was suddenly dive-bombed by one of the black kites that inhabit the river area! After recovering from the shock, my first thought was, darn - I wish I could have caught that on camera. The kite flew away empty beaked as he had only succeeded in knocking my food on to the steps. I stayed to finish my retrieved lunch with camera poised in the hope the kite would have another attempt - but I guess he found easier pickings elsewhere!

These looks delicious!!! I would like to visit all these shops! The onigiri set with soup! Indeed the location is great for a meal begore you explore Higashiyama or afterwards (I usually start my day at Kuyomizu dera and end at Yasaka shrine). And such a great idea pf the second and third shop to sell nori seperately. Not only stays the nori crispy, at this shop my husband can eat onigiri as well as he doesn't eat seaweed. And I just love crispy nori. Chestnut onigiri! I love to try that! And shrip and tamagoyakim and tamago yaki.... I'm getting hungry! It's nice to see that you can eat in most of these shops. I usually see take out places. I only know one onigiri shop and that is in Otsuka in Tokyo.

Could you please write the (ideally) Japanese names or a website or googlemaps link in the description. It is very difficult to copy over the long names on the screen without mistakes by hand, and even then, you sometimes get no google results (like the second place). A name to copy over would make this much easier.

Interesting . . . in my university 日本語 classes, おにぎりwas the gloss given to 'rice ball'. But i grew up using おむすび, and the instructors didn't seem to mind when i used it. i thought perhaps it was a Honshu vs Kyushu thing (母 was from Ōita) - but now i see the signs say "おむすび". Why is only おにぎり taught to second-language students? (i'd have to explain to classmates every time that i am a heritage speaker, but the university does not offer 日本語 as a heritage language, though it does Korean and Vietnamese. i have not had my mother to speak with since high school, so am extremely rusty.)

In Japanese history, that triangular symbol represented the Hōjō clan - a powerful Samurai family that controlled the Kamakura Shogunate between the 13th and 14th Centuries. That symbol's design continues to be used as a motif throughout Japanese culture.

Shinichi and Satoshi, I have a huge problem. My partner is hugely and very allergic to rice. I'd pay anything to have rice, onigiri, all of it, but he can't have rice. Both of you or either of you, what would you substitute for rice in meals?
@tarabooartarmy3654
@tarabooartarmy3654 9 ай бұрын
Oh, my goodness! I feel so bad for your partner being allergic to rice. Some things I thing might be a good sustitute would be barley, couscous, Israeli couscous, quinoa, or hemp hearts. I’m diabetic and the Keto Twins channel had a recipe for using hemp hearts as a substitute for rice. I haven’t tried it yet, but I did buy the hemp hearts so I can make it soon. I’d say couscous might be the best substitute to try to make onigiri since it would likely hold together best. It gets a little sticky when you cook it.
