Many years ago, in my buddy's dorm room, we saw an interview with a couple of guys from this band Kyuss on MTV and they were clearly super high. We immediately left, bought Blues for the Red Sun and headed to the local rural roads to burn one at high speed and make our ears ring. So many great memories.

Finally someone reacted to these guys. Thank you so much!! Their best album was Welcome to Sky Valley. Check out the songs "Gardenia" or "Odyssey" one day (even if it isn't a reaction) I actually saw John Garcia (the singer) live at Ozzfest on the side stage when he was with Slo Burn. Hardly anyone was there because a band was playing on the main stage at the same time. I got close to him after they were done and yelled something stupid like "John Garcia, wooo!" made eye contact with him and then walked away.

Saw them open for Danzig in 93. They were amazing but Josh was clearly a little drunk. Scott Reeder was amazebalz. Errie Von (Danzig bassist) was by the side of the stage headbanging during their whole set. I wish Josh had been on board with the reunion but he felt at the time that it was better to leave that music in past even though they would have been a HUGE response to them playing again. They are all still alive so time will tell.

If I remember correctly, the way they get that beefy sound, is by tuning the guitar in drop C tuning, which is much lower than the usual rock tuning, but I may be wrong. Always loved that heavy sound. If you love the bass in that tune, then you would probably also love to listen to some Royal Blood, their live performances on the Preston and Steve show are great.
@ga0425
@ga0425 4 жыл бұрын
@shuriken48 you are correct sir. (or ma’am. didn’t mean to be presumptuous). Top & bottom strings tuned to C#. The beef in their sound is further inforced by Scott Reeder killer bass playing and of course the amazing John Garcia’s vocals. If you dig this stuff, looking to any and all of their drummer, Brent Bjork’s solo projects. He’s multi instrumental, a lyricist & A freaking cool human being. Hell, they all are!

@ga0425

@shuriken48 hahaha! Dig that sense of humor there. Probably more than his other musical endeavors, which to me are very impressive; composing soundtracks for movies and video games, helping produce and/or contributing to other musician’s projects, both well known and otherwise, I find his attitude and DIY spirit thatgot him started in music similar to mine. That is living in a somewhat remote area, not being frustrated with the lack of the music that he wanted to hear and instead formed a band. And rather than lament not having any place to play, organize parties out in the middle of the desert to showcase his band and other bands that fell loosely under the same style. His belief in what he was doing and tenacious attitude (I feel) helped him take his band and others into a higher profile that the main stream music industry took notice of. He always seem to remember the roots of where he came from and I found it very impressive that he took his monetary success and cofounded the Sweet Stuff Foundation. I’ve also really enjoyed and relate to his sense of humor and the way he encourages others. Be it through his music, his attitude and his humor. .Of his musical output, despite perhaps not being a popular opinion, I really dug/dig Them Crooked Vultures. And of course his involvement & founding, and various performances on The Desert Sessions series. I will admit that I was a little sad at all the legal nonsense that he seemed to have started earlier this century when the Kyuss reformation was underway. As a long time skateboarder, I had a couple opportunities to skate at the Nude Bowl where Kyuss and many other cool bands-including Fatso Jetton, Sonic Youth & others would perform. It was at an nudist camp in a remote area of the desert that had been pretty much burned and destroyed, with a perfect kidney shaped pool being all that remained. It was similar to the generator parties that had been held in the 90s. The second time we skated there there were some local band jam in and it was a blast!I’ve had the pleasure of opening for Brant Bjork and the Bro’s a couple times as well as One of his solo tours. I’ve met Scott Reede and John Garcia on various occasions and had the distinct pleasure of seeing KyussLives perform outside, in Santa Fe New Mexico, with the beautiful, southwestern sunset as a backdrop as they began their set. It would’ve been great if Josh had decided to be a part of that reunion tour, but Bruno Fevery was spot on! Thank you so much for asking the question. I hope that my long winded explanation did not bore you. I wish you and yours Health and happiness. Never stop being curious, never stop loving music. I don’t know who you are, but I consider you a friend already.

If you lived in MA, Rich, you must be familiar with this song. It was a yearly tradition to listen to this on Thanksgiving back there and a lot of radio stations would play it this time of year. you open a whole can of worms with desert/stoner rock etc. just soo many good bands around, all kinda same in style and atmosphere, but also really different in sound and songwriting... YOB, Sleep, Kylesa, Melvins, Ufomammut, Monolord, Stoned Jesus, Earth, Electric Wizard, Clutch, Colour Haze, Red Fang, My Sleeping Karma, Queens of the Stone Age, Masters of Reality... they are all so different, but this underlying dirt, groove, coolness and relaxedness is found in any of these bands and is what makes this music really special... the "fuzz" of guitars and bass, the simple but groovy drum beats, it sounds somewhat "dry" and most bands came/come out of regions close to desert(lands) so I guess this is why they t ermed the music that way... stoner part should be obvious.
