The Charismatic Voice

The Charismatic Voice

Күн бұрын

I expected harsh vocals and demonic undertones before my first listen to Skid Row a few months ago, which were ultimately shattered by Sebastian Bach's sweet tenor range and beautiful ensemble of "I Remember You". I think that stems from having lived next to Skid Row in Los Angeles, and projecting. This time, I was prepared. Or was I?
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Skid Row performing "18 and Life".

Scotti Hill is even underappreciated by the cameras. They concentrated so much on Dave Sabo because of looks that they barely even show that Scotti played this solo. Killer guitarist that usually played the slower melodic solos like this, Wasted Time and so forth.

Agreed. I think part of the problem is Skiw Row just gets lumped into that generic last wave of hair metal trying to hang on while grunge was taking over the world. A lot of those bands don't really get judged on their own merit but as weird products of their time. Sebastian Bach definitely stands out as one of the greater talents from that scene.

But Slave to the Grind came out in mid 91, and shortly after that, Nirvana exploded, and grunge exploded with them. So even the good bands the preceded them had a tough time for a while. It was a wild time to be alive, and there was a ton of good music, but so much got overshadowed by the massive impact of grunge in the popular music scene.

I was at a rock festival in Sweden in 2005 where Sebastian played. The concert was awesome (I am/was a long time fan of Skid Row). Afterwards he held a meet and greet and my brother and I were first in line. He asked my name and I said Rikke and then he immediately sang the first verse of 18 and Life for me - switching "boy" with "girl". I was speechless. He was so sweet, kind and humble to talk to and I will never ever forget it.

Hi, crime author here. First off; thanks for being you. I've recently learned that I can sing (my SO introduced me to where my voice is, she had some choir training), and I've been following your channel and learning a lot. Keep doing your thing! Anyhow, your comment about "why do guys keep guns in their pants??" I can (sorta) explain that. That style of carry is called "Appendix carry" or "Mexican carry". Yes, it's associated with criminals and yes, it's as dangerous a way of carrying a gun as you'd imagine for all the reasons you can think of. And yes, plenty of criminals are admitted to hospitals across the country from self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the...groin area. Why people do it; mostly its so they can throw guns away if police are chasing them and have no connection to said gun - after all, if the cops don't actually catch you with the gun it isn't your gun. Also, it apparently feels "manly" and "badass" to have a gun shoved down your pants. I don't get that part any more than you do, but apparently it takes all kinds.

Wasted Time is a must. Besides Sebastian's literally unbelievable range, this video shows his talent in relaying emotion. This is not just a song. It is a personal plea to a friend who has been deafened by falling into the black hole of heroin addiction. I don't think there is a more perfect example of the whirlwind of emotions experienced by those who have watched someone they love killing themselves and not being able to reach them. He sings from the depths of his soul and his pain is palpable. It is soul crushing and will leave you speechless. In my opinion, it is a masterpiece.

Following this up with Warrant's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" would be awesome. Though I usually prefer live videos, I'd strongly suggest the official video - the imagery helps to tell the story and define the emotions in the song.

Beautiful analysis! I've been listening to these guys since their debut in the 80s, and you helped me love this song even more. So glad you got to Sebastian! 2 more metal vocalists with unbelievable expression and control from this era that I don't believe you've analyzed yet are Jack Russell from Great White and Midnight from Crimson Glory. For Great White, "House of Broken Love" is an incredible display of what Jack Russell can do. For Crimson Glory-too many choices, but you can't go wrong with "In Dark Places" for unreal vocal acrobatics.

You could say that this song is about stupid mistakes of youth that can ruin your life. Dave Sabo wrote this song originally about his brother Rick that came home from Vietnam a different person but couldn't make the lyrics work so they changed it to be a story about an 18 year old boy who shot his friend by accident. He thought the gun wasn't loaded.
@AnnaluisaSocher
@AnnaluisaSocher Ай бұрын
That's interesting. I thought that originally Dave Sabo wrote this song with the lyrics referring to his brother who served in Vietnam, and as he came back home, he was a different person. It was Jon Bon Jovi who gave him advice about making the subject of the song related more to everyone else's experiences, so listeners could find something on which they could relate. Recently I watched an interview with Rachel Bolan who pointed out this.

@@AnnaluisaSocher After further research, you are right, it originally started out originally about Dave's brother that went to Vietnam and came back a different person but they said it didn't work out as they wanted to so they changed the narrative (from an interview on Bravewords website entitled 'Dave "Snake" Sabo tells the true story behind Skid Row Class "18 and Live.) I can't put the link here, KZfaq will delete the comment (updated my comment based on further research)

Sebastian Bach was called the "pretty boy with the golden voice". I never really liked hair bands or metal very much but I really liked a lot of Skid Row because of Sebastian Bach's voice. He said in an interview that his vocal style is an old Italian style called bel canto and it was taught to him by a man named Don Lawrence.
