What do the “custom” modes for Twin Cobra and Tiger-Heli do?

I like what M2 is doing - it's like the Criterion Collection digging out silent film-era [Tiger Heli] and early 'golden age' content [Twin Cobra]. There's no criticizing M2 for their technical prowess and feature-rich releases, but I expect that the main criticisms will be launched against M2 as good or bad 'curators.' Especially if M2 increases the release pace - the next collection arriving in Spring 2022 - I cannot wait to get flooded with a backlog of these classic Toaplan releases in 2-a-year bunches. And I think it was a smart strategic move to have one of the hardest sells of the catalogue as the leading release - this one is admittedly for classic STG purists and it's only up from here. Although I'm sure there will be plenty of groaning in the community who will be hungry for M2-treated Raizing and Cave titles, and this will probably only get louder as time goes on.

It's a good point. Once the earlier stuff is dealt with, then it really should be just a flood of top quality stuff. The only worry I'd have, though, is that the Switch is probably at about the peak of its sales trajectory right now and there's currently a real momentum around shmups on the platform. If Batsugun etc don't get releases until, say 2023 (or later!), will that still be true? Or will people have moved on to other consoles or ways of playing? I'm pretty sure from the limited physical game companies' releases that physical shmups sell a lot better on Switch than elsewhere and it would be a shame to see M2 miss out on maximising that potential as, more than anything else, I really want them to do well and be rewarded for the stellar work they've been doing - and not cause I'm particularly altruistic, just so they'll keep doing it!

@@ShmupsOnSwitch I worry about that element of this release schedule, too. There's a worrying historical precedent here with 'Toaplan Shooting Battle 1,' a planned PSX Toaplan series that literally died on the first release, a collection of Tiger-Heli and Twin Cobra. I hope post-Same-Same-Same, M2 will jump to a Truxton/Tatsujin Oh! pack - increasing consumer goodwill again. And then, after that, it sounded like OutZone and FixEight would be on the table. And then, fingers crossed, Batsugun - very close, one has to imagine, to the end of the Switch's market life. Speculation abound. Since M2 is so important to the scene, it's a tremendous exhibition of 'opportunity cost' - when they choose to treat X game and not Y game, it really has a big impact on the STG fanbase because no one, not even the talented LiveWire team, gets even close to doing what they do. Does part of me secretly wish that M2 had just released a DDP collection with, I don't know, an Ibara collection on the way in spring 2022? Yes. And would that timeline be better for the invigoration of the STG scene in the English-speaking world? Also yes. But what we have is still pretty special. (Also, thanks for the service you're doing the community with your channel. I'm a big fan of your content and really glad you stepped up to fill the coverage gap of this niche of the gaming landscape.)

This just came in the post from Play Asia this morning - very much looking forward to trying out. I’m not sure about the none-shmup games, and I would have certainly preferred them sticking Fire Shark and Truxton on there, but I guess that’s for another collection or two.

Even if it is an odd inclusion for this collection, I'm incredibly excited for Guardian. It's one of the earliest Beat 'em Ups of all time, predating Nekketsu Koha Kunio-Kun/Renegade by six months.

Had this thing for 5 days now. I think the handling of Twin Cobra(arcade) and Tiger-Heli(arcade) is 10/10. M2 pushed these two as far as they could and I can't really ask for anything more. They are as good as they will ever get (all the M2 gadgets). If you're a fan of these two games then you'll love them here. The problem is the 8-bit versions are more or less worthless to me. I find them painful to play. The MD/PCE ports of Twin Cobra are fine and Tiger Heli for the Genesis is decent. The two non-shooter games are fine for their time but I don't see myself playing them much. Overall the value of the package is a very meh 6/10. It comes down to if you're a fan of the arcade versions of Twin Cobra and Tiger-Heli.

You can't go wrong with any M2 release but the inclusion of the non shmups is a weird choice for sure. Still a no brainer for me. I'll be purchasing the PS4 version this month via free shipping from Play Asia. Thank you again for the honest review

I hope that at some point they do what they did with Aleste and work with the original Toaplan staff in some capacity to make a "modern" Toaplan game (my vote would be for a third Flying Shark game)

I didn't expect to love this one, but having played it for a few days I'm won over. There's something slightly more satisfying for me about this era than Cave games, which are now also well-repped on Switch with the recent inexpensive ports. For these titles, having so many ports and modes on one cartridge is great for comparison & preservation. I like the umbrella of "Arcade Garage" as an excuse to build an archive of Toaplan games. I was initially going to skip Flying Shark, Outzone and others, but now I plan to buy all releases in this series.
@ShmupsOnSwitch

I'm actually quite looking forward to the Flying Shark collection. Here, the biggest problem for me is that while Kyuukyoku Tiger is decent, Tiger Heli's a bit of a dud. On the Flying Shark collection however, it should be two games of equal - or maybe even higher - quality than Kyuukyoku Tiger, and sounds like a far more worthwhile package. Nice to have so much choice though. At the moment there's something for everyone coming out all the time!

For Twin Cobra/Kyuukyoku Tiger is there an option to use the CD soundtrack from the FM Towns version? If not that's a huge missed opportunity because that soundtrack kicks ass. On one hand I do enjoy Twin Cobra well enough (and it is the main inspiration for my favorite shmup of all time, Raiden). On the other hand, there are far more deserving vertical shmups for the M2 Shottriggers treatment like Armed Police Batrider, Battle Bakraid, the Donpachi/Dodonpachi series, Dimahoo, Viper Phase 1, Air Gallet, and other arcade games that either never got ports, or got inferior ports that didn't do them justice.

Tiger Heli and Kyukyoku Tiger are very important games to study and enjoy until the Gradius syndrome kicks in. Kyukyoku Tiger and Twin Cobra by today’s standard is a weird beast where the main source of difficulty is its Gradius syndrome. Get hit once and recovery is quite difficult.

What are people's thoughts on the way it looks like these Toaplan releases are being brought out? A couple of shmups and a couple of other arcade games per release looks like it's going to be the format - is this a good way of doing things? Are people pleased to get the opportunity to check out some of Toaplan's more obscure releases? Or would you prefer it if M2 just went straight for the big guns and kept shmups and other genres separate?

This and the pending 2nd release are definitely the low tier games out of the toaplan’s outstanding back catalog. I just hope low sells don’t prevent them getting the other’s out 😩 Surely putting out truxton or batsugun first would have been that better business decision 🤦‍♂️

Oh, I totally agree. it's kind of a weird one because, yeah, it's great from a preservation standpoint and I'm really pleased to see them avoid the fate of becoming forgotten, but at the same time they're not the games I personally want to play. I think my preference would probably be Shot Triggers releases for the more "important" shmups, with the less popular games compiled into larger collections with fewer gadgets etc.

This might be the first ShotTriggers release I skip since they started releasing on Switch. One thing I do wish this video did was spend a little time comparing the PCE & MD versions, as I understand it they made some welcome changes that address the complaints with the arcade. Either way, I might just go and get the Mega Drive version instead....in fact, I already own Same! Same! Same! & Tatsujin on MD as well, so I might be in the "Hurry up and get to Batsugun" club. That game's stayed crazy expensive on Saturn, so a Gadget-ified M2 release would be very welcome.

I have the physical and I'm happy with it, but I really hope M2 also release some other games in between. These are cool games, but we also need something a bit more modern once in a while. There are so many great shmups we want, but M2 are so slow. I wish M2 would be a bit more productive. Yes, I know it's a very small company, just saying the wait for this was kind of long for what's on offer. The way things are going it could be years till we get some of the really good stuff everyone wants, like Batrider, Bakraid or some more Cave. There are so many Toaplan games, and they are really taking there time. People talk really badly about the Psikyo collections, but at least they were a bit meaty. I feel the next Toaplan release with Flying Shark/Fire Shark could have been grouped with this - similar themes etc. I also wished they would create a bit more variety in the releases. Why not release a Sci-fi themes shmup, like Truxton or Outzone, between the military ones? I'm hoping Hamster can step up and make some more high end collections. There emulation is solid and they have some great licenses. They should look at what M2 is doing and follow that example instead of underselling themselves like this. Who wouldn't pay $30-40 for a good physical release of Gradius 3, for example.
@ShmupsOnSwitch
@ShmupsOnSwitch 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, it can be a bit confusing following quite what and how much M2 does do. They've previously only put out a Shot Triggers release about once a year, but they do do lots of other work for other companies - eg Sega Ages line, and work on the Darius collection. They also made Senjin Aleste for arcades last year and (I think) they have another new Aleste game, Aleste Branch, in the works too.

Not always quality - the Contra collection was garbage (misunderstanding of display options for Super Contra) and the G-Darius HD collection was rushed and required an update. An apology video featuring Horii from M2 is on KZfaq. Also, Get Star has never been emulated in MAME. Hence the excitement for people who love the game. And don't forget context - Tiger Heli came out at the same time as Capcom's 1942.

I'm not interested in Tiger Heli, Same!Same!Same! (the next collection supposedly) or Kyukyokorokuoku Tiger at all. I don't think these games have aged particularly well. Preservation is important, but I question the decision to port this first, rather than leading with a set of killer games that everyone already wants, like OutZone, Truxton, Tatsujin-Ou and Batsugun. "We'll get those later." Yeah sure. But starting with less interesting games means more people will just skip the release entirely. If they started off with the best games first, maybe people would be encouraged to try the older ones later, after having played their fill of batsugun. I'm not about to buy games I wouldn't enjoy just to support a developer, no matter how good they are at porting shit.
