I was to the church many years ago where his shrine once stood until Henry VIII destroyed it. Now there is only a simple candle that marks the spot. Henry VIII destroyed so many ancient manuscripts regarding the Catholic Church in England. We will never know the complete history of the church in England because of this evil king.

No, Christ's Catholic Church didn't go too far. Henry had been so much a faithful Catholic, that the Pope himself labeled Henry "Defender of the Faith." Just a few short years later, Henry turned on the Church and his fellow Catholics just because the Pope said (and rightly so) that Henry's marriage to Catherine was indeed valid. Thousands upon thousands of Catholics were arrested, tortured, and slaughtered for 300 years.

Beautiful sequence. The beauty and reverence of the Traditional Catholic rituals. Richard Burton's voice at the Episcopal benediction [ 3:21 ] is so fittingly majestic, beautiful, I love replaying this portion (actually this entire sequence), just to hear the vocal reverence of the ceremony. Becket had been a top administrator in Henry's government before taking holy orders and rising quickly in the Church. He had not led a cloistered, monastic life. Henry thought he could wield influence over his close friend, but Becket answered to an even higher authority.

@@sammcpeak6854 Correct; Becket was appointed chancellor to Henry II in 1155. He was installed Archbishop of Canterbury in 1162, but two years later was exiled to France, where he lived a monastic life at Pontigny and Sens. He was still Archbishop, however. His contempt regarding Henry's rule had put a price on his head. He had ecclesiastical duties to fulfill. He was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral December 29, 1170.

Agreed, but there is one error in the sanctuary arrangement. St. Thomas Becket lived in the 12th century. Tabernacles weren't put on the altar until the 16th century. Prior to this, the reserved Eucharist was kept in a special cabinet called an aumbry, recessed into the wall on either side of the altar, or was placed above it in a gold vessel (often shaped like a dove) suspended by chains.

The tabernacle was not on the altar at that time in England, a small mistake here
@yardgoods
@yardgoods 5 жыл бұрын
@BWilliam Leo I was wondering about that. But there's no tabernacle on the same altar (I think it's the same altar) in the excommunication of Lord Gilbert scene and in the last scene when Becket is murdered. Could it be that a tabernacle was placed on altars during episcopal consecrations at that time?
@giovanniserafino1731
@giovanniserafino1731 5 жыл бұрын
Since the principal purpose of the tabernacle was the reservation of the Blessed Sacramentfor the sick and dying its placement on the altar ( which was a later development ) during the consecration of a bishop was very odd indeed. It was interesting to note, that the Chalice on the altar was covered by the back end of the Corporal which is historically correct for the time period. Today a separate cloth call a Pall is used.
@mosesking2923
@mosesking2923 5 жыл бұрын
Traditionally, a Catholic altar always has an odd number of steps leading up to it. Yet there are four steps. A minor quable for a well recreated historical set. Odd how the bishop's cathedra is behind the altar when it is usually to the left of the altar in most Cathedrals.

Becket was a rather imperious guy. Even the Pope didn't really like him. Henry had made a very bad decision in picking his very worldly and rich friend. Becket liked to wield power. Unfortunately for Becket he thought he was more untouchable than he actually was. Henry most probably did not want Becket killed, but he did find the assassination helpful to his plans. This film gets the costumes of the clergy spot on to what a 12th century bishop would look like. Too often films showing clergy have sort of clergy-ish costumes.

I don't see it as evil, but as an unnecessary change that as Cardinal Ottaviani said represents a striking departure from the theology of the Tridentine Mass. This change was thought to facilitate the union of the Anglican and Lutheran churches with Rome if those things that they found in the Tridentine Mass at odds with their theology of the service of Holy Communion. That has not happened, and did immeasurable damage to the church and faithful causing many to go into schism and apostasy and a death of vocations with many religious houses and seminaries being closed or much reduced in occupancy with only a few elderly members of once thriving community.

Altars were not always pushed against the wall. That was largely only done in smaller parishes in the Middle Ages where space in the Sanctuary was limited, and was adopted more widely after Trent. The Liturgy was still done ad orientem of course, but the altar was often freestanding, especially in Cathedrals as the Bishop's cathedra would be placed directly behind it, as it still is in the Byzantine Rite. Nothing Novus Ordo about it, just Medieval.

Look at the vestments that Becket and the bishops are wearing. They're beautiful, fitting, traditional, but also masculine. I will never understand why traditionalists priests today are so in love with effeminate looking albs dripping with lace, and skimpy chasubles that look like two flaps of cloth hanging down front and back, known as the Roman or fiddleback chasuble. This came into being as an innovation, a departure FROM tradition. In stead of simplifying overly ornamented Gothic chasubles that made it hard for priests to move in the late 1400's, the solution was to cut more and more away from the sides! Two popes and St. Charles Borromeo spoke out against the so called Roman chasuble. Want to be traditional? Want to exemplify Christ as a priest and a MAN? Go back to what we see in this film!

Yeah, of all the problems with Catholic liturgy, I don't think that the laced albs is highest on the priority list. Bringing back the Tridentine Mass (pre-1955) is all that will suffice. The aesthetics, like ugly vestments and ugly churches, can easily be fixed later.

Beautiful movie scene. Though I can't help but wonder how many of those happy peasants cheering outside starved while the church hegemony swept about the cathedrals swathed in silks and speckled with gold and jewels. Strange, then, to see so many of the comments on these clips shouting for a return to this setup.

I doubt that most of those "starving peasants" would have begrudged the beauty of God's house or shared your secularist views. I didn't see a church building swathed in silk but assume you meant the vestments worn by the bishops.

You sound like the Pharisees condemning the woman who poured expensive ointment on our Lords feet. Our Lord blessed this woman's homage and deference. In the Old Testament, God Himself commanded the Hebrews in the Sinai Desert how He was to be worshipped. And they were exacting directions, where much gold and skillful craftsmanship was expected. The Levite priests were also expected to arrayed in fine vestments. Not coarse woven garments. If this was demanded of them, we should offer our Lord, God, no less. All glory and honor be His!!!

I'll assume the depiction of investiture was fairly accurate so as not to offend sensibilities. Assuming that, it also demonstrates that the Church was pretty out-of-control by this time. Crowning and enthroning a priest is a little over-the-top. Pretty worldly.

The Mitre and the Throne are symbols of the Episcopacy derived from Biblical Imagery. The Mitre hearkens back to the Mitre or Turban worn by the High Priest Aaron. The Throne or Cathedra hearkens back to the concept of the Chair of Moses mentioned by Christ and to the thrones Christ promised to the Apostles during the Last Supper. Far from being worldly, they illustrate properly the spiritual authority of the Bishop within the Church.

They multiply Priests and saints with a sullen face, perform miracles, cast out demons. Jesus said the tree is known by its fruit. THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW 7: 21-23: 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and did many miracles in your name?' 23 Then will I tell them plainly that I did not know you at all. Get away from me, you workers of iniquity. Matthew 7: 15-20 15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do they gather grapes from thorns or figs from thistles? 17 So every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; and an evil tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Ye shall know them by their fruits. B. LETTER TO CORINTHIANS (Apostle Paul) 11: 13-15: 13 For such are the apostles, liars, deceitful workers, impersonating the apostles of Christ. 14 And it is not surprising. because Satan also takes the form of a bright angel.15 Wherefore, it is not a great thing that his ministers should be likened unto the ministers of righteousness. Their end will be in proportion to their deeds. 4: 4. In whom is the god of this world? (Satan) blinded the minds of the unbelievers, that the light of the glory of the gospel of Christ might not shine upon them, which is the image of God.

It's a terrible mixture of words from the Bible taken out of context and the ornate things of Rome to impress the eyes of the laity. I doubt I'll have many friends in this comment section, but that shouldn't cow me into keeping silent. My Lord Jesus did not die on the Cross for all men who are willing to pay the price of faith to be saved through Him for the Vatican to build up a hierarchy to replace the hierarchy of Judaism! Our Lord Jesus Christ has enshrined the concept that only He is Lord (and what a Lord He is that He washes the feet of Simon Peter and the others and prepares a table for them) and that the rest of us are all brothers. Shall we desert Him and set men over us as rulers, just as the children of Israel did in rebelling against their own God by asking God for a king of their own to replace Samuel's two sons? God forbid!

All of the ritual centres around the worship of Christ. All of it designed to impart theological knowledge of God to every sense. Were you baptised? Why? It's ritual. Or is it because the Lord instituted it. Investigate our "empty ritual" and see that it is biblical, instituated by the Lord and the disciples.

paxmaster2002 Baptism does NOT save a person. Baptism is the outward expression of a persons FAITH in the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. It symbolizes the condition of our lives ... dead in a state of sin as ordinary folks ... WITHOUT the saving knowledge and acceptance of the free gift of eternal life in Heaven ... instead of the certainty of eternity in hell as an unsaved person. The person is immersed ... that’s the death of self and acceptance of Salvation ... and lifted back up out the water symbolizing the resurrection of our new life in FAITH in God ... washed and made clean ... forgiven of all a persons sins in life. Giving yourself to Jesus means HE is given charge over your life. Jesus is in control of your every aspect of day to day life. Baptism says ... I AM GLORIOUSLY SAVED BY THE CLEANSING BLOOD OF JESUS THAT HE SHED FOR ME ON THAT CROSS. That’s all there is to it. FIRST a person has to be willing ... and make a personal choice to climb out from behind the “wheel” ... representing your life ... and get in the back seat , giving Jesus the drivers seat to do the driving of your life ... WITHOUT a person telling HIM where to turn ... what road to take ... and how fast or slow to drive. Jesus is given CONTROL. Along the way ... a person sitting in the back seat gets to see allot of people that wrapped their lives around telephone poles. Cleaned out a ditch or two ... or worse ... crashed their lives ... head on. Jesus comes to live inside of you when you invite HIM into your life. Get it ? It’s not ritualistic. Religion is ... that’s man made. Christianity is the greatest experience on earth and Jesus said that if it were not so ... he would have told us so. It’s a Supernatural road trip of a lifetime. Allot more exciting than special operations. The mission of a lifetime ... and I’ve never had one ritualistic moment serving our Father in Heaven. Thanks to Jesus ... I am spiritually locked and loaded !!! Semper Fi
