Léonard Misonne (1 July 1870 - 14 September 1943) was a Belgian pictorialist photographer. He is known for his landscapes and street scenes with atmospheric skies. Born to a wealthy family in Gilly, Belgium in 1870, Léonard Misonne was one of many children of Adèle Pirmez and lawyer and industrialist Louis Misonne. He studied Greek and humanities in Charleroi before going to the Université catholique de Louvain where he got a degree in mining engineering. However, he did not become a mining engineer in the long term.
Misonne is best known for his atmospheric photographs of landscapes and street scenes, with light as a key feature, and as a pioneer of pictorialism. According to the Directory of Belgian Photographers, "Misonne’s work is characterised by a masterly treatment of light and atmospheric conditions. His images express poetic qualities, but sometimes slip into an anecdotal sentimentality." He was nicknamed "the Corot of photography".Misonne devoted himself to photography from 1896, joining the Belgian Photography Association in 1897. He became a leading light in pictorialism, frequently exhibiting his photographs at exhibitions. The German occupation of Belgium during World War II greatly restricted his photography.

So so beautiful. I find these old black and whites so moving. These pictures to me are the closest yet to art. The stuff from today is not in the same league. Todays pictures have no feelings.

It is truly amazing. You should check out George H. Seeley, he's an old pictorialist photographer. And there's also Samantha Cavet, who's a modern photographer with painting-like photos. Really amazing works from both of them.

Beautiful. When I see wonderful old photographs like this, I often wonder what kind of images they would have created if they had access to modern equipment.

They definitely wouldn't be as beautiful. Part of the beauty is the effort that was made with the limitations of his time.

"Belgian photographer Leonard Misonne (1870-1943) trained as an engineer before discovering photography. Raised in Gilly, Belgium, the photographer traveled throughout his homeland and beyond to capture the landscape and people of Europe in the Pictorialist style. Photographs, characterized by soft, painterly scenes, were created through alternative printing processes that utilize materials such as oil and gum bichromate. The Pictorialist movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries sought to elevate photography to the level of other fine arts such as painting and sculpture. Misonne said, “The sky is the key to the landscape.” This philosophy is clear in many of Misonne’s images, often filled with billowing clouds, early morning fog, or rays of sunlight. The artist excelled at capturing his subjects in dramatic, directional light, illuminating figures from behind, which resulted in a halo effect. Favoring stormy weather conditions, Misonne often found his subjects navigating the streets under umbrellas or braced against the gusts of a winter blizzard."

Sainte photographie!

I find photos like these both wonderful and depressing. Wonderful, because they are works of art. Depressing, because, today, we have some of the best photographic technology available and such art is still difficult to achieve.
