This is a beautiful easy clean version - I've made several versions (pleated, 3D, Olsen) and have not been satisfied until now! Really easy to insert a filter too! I will use it to prolong my hospital mask given to me when I work. I like this pattern best because it has a nice space to allow breathing and talking. Thanks for sharing this video and pattern Keiko!! This is the only version I'll made now! EDITED (5-28-2020): I've learned a few more things I could share with everyone if it helps. But make sure you view Keiko's video thoroughly before reading my comments or they won't make sense. My sister and I have only been making this pattern because we find it very easy, but very comfortable for us and others we make them for. Best thing is to make your patterns on cardstock so you can trace onto your fabric layers. This pattern allows you to use a 2nd inner lining if you didn't want to use the same fabric for the outer and inner layers. My outer layers have been pretty printed 100% cotton or denim, inner layer is softer neutral color cotton flannel or muslin, and filter pocket has been scraps of good fabric or cotton blend. *Wash all fabrics in hot water and dry in hot dryer a long time to shrink them as much as you can. This prevents mask shrinkage with multiple washes and also tightens the fibers of the fabric for better protection. We now have made 5 sizes: Extra small: 22x14 cm, 6.5 INCH square filter, 4.6 cm corners; Small is the original pattern made with 25cm x 16 cm rectangle, 5 cm corners, 17.5cm square filter pocket (FP); Medium is 27 x 17 cm, 6 cm corners, 18.5 cm square FP; Large 28 cm x 18 cm, 6 cm corner, 19.5 cm square FP, and Extra-large is 29 x 18.5 cm, 6 cm corner, 20 cm FP, XXL 32 cm x 20.5 cm, 2.5 inch corners, 20.5 cm square FP. I am Asian but don't have a little petite face so Medium is my size. I can fit a large too but like the fit of the Medium more. We've been making a bunch and most people fit L or XL, and a few have needed XXL. Easiest is to make your patterns on cardstock, iron your fabrics and place your pattern on top and trace around, pin the fabrics then cut a 1 cm seam allowance all around. Don't start with large rectangle pieces of cut fabrics like she did - it does make for a nice tutorial but it causes a lot of fabric waste. Make a bunch of filters, align the filters inside your cut pieces, pin the 3 layers together, and once you have a bunch of masks pinned and ready to sew, it goes pretty fast because this thread is on the inside and not visible so you don't have to change thread color. Once I turn the material right side out, when I sew the wire pockets I'll use a matching color for the pocket, with the bobbin color matching the exterior fabric. Group your masks together by color then to reduce # of bobbin thread changes. (Unless you're super OCD, the thread color on the inside of the mask doesn't matter, just the thread showing on the outside printed fabric). Then I sew decent sized side channels the way she instructs, which will accommodate your ear ties. EAR TIES: T-shirt ties continue to work well as ties and are most comfortable in our opinion, if you have beads (with large enough holes) and a needle nose pliers, you can push the ends of the ties through the beads (then knot the ends); paracord makes sleek pretty ties but are a pain to work with - have to remove the inner strings sometimes to accommodate the beads, if you remove too many strings, then the beads may slide too easily, so you can't tighten the ear ties; soft satin ties also work with beads that have smaller holes (unsure how these ties hold up over multiple washings, but if you leave the side channels of the mask large enough you can easily replace the ties. If using satin ties, burn the ends to prevent fraying, then knot them after inserting through the bead. This video has brilliant tip to making continue t shirt yarn: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLV3Y5uIlaeZf6s.html. I roll them on an empty paper towel roll and cut 14" pieces for ties. You can just knot the ties at the end and let people tie in a knot once they adjust to their ears, and you can forgo the beads. BEADS: If you use t-shirt ties (my favorite version), "pony plastic beads" from Walmart work really well! They will hold better in the washer and dryer and won't bleed like the painted wooden beads may. WIRE POCKETS: I leave 1 end open when sewing, insert 2 trash ties for strength; remove them before washing. When I make them for others, I wash them, dry them and place them into clean ziploc bags while masked and using very clean hands so the wearer can wear it immediately. Otherwise instruct them to wash before wearing. I also email them instructions about using the cloth masks properly (like putting it over their nose and pressing the wire down to create a good seal; removing the wires prior to washing, washing the mask daily, during the day if not using, keep it in a clean brown paper bag to store, putting the mask on and taking off with clean hands, by the ties, not touching the front, stuff like that). I'm sure you've seen people wear their masks pulled down so their noses are exposed, and also they would just stuff the mask into their pocket and re-use constantly - it's no longer clean that way. Sorry for the long comment, just wanted to share tips - again - love this pattern and thank you again Keiko!

D MS I’m sorry I missed this! I had little 1 cm size wooden beads from my girls’ crafting box - they have 4 mm holes through which I pull t shirt ties through with needle nose pliers. My sister uses beads with 3 mm holes to hold satin ties. I’ve seen the beads on Amazon but you just need to confirm how big the holes are for your ties. Hope that helps!
@grinchlette

Billie Nguyen thank you!! I found both 3mm & 4mm holed beads on eBay. Yes, the hole size is the key when buying. All your tips have been VERY helpful!! You did all the work for us in resizing. Thank you!!!! Thank you to Keiko for this beautiful pattern!

@@grinchlette You are so very welcome! The more people who are able to make these masks, the better we are all off! The ones we've made them for said they find these masks very comfortable to wear also. I've just updated my tips again, correcting some typos (sorry all). I must've either been too excited or too sleepy when updating the last time. I've stopped using wooden beads and now use t shirt ties with plastic pony beads easily found at Walmart in the craft section. I figure it would be better to use something that people can readily find and fix their masks themselves when the time comes because these masks will be washed over and over.

That means the fit of the mask is fine. So it should be safer for other people and for yourself because you really breathe through the fabric of the mask and not through gaps at the edge of the mask.

@debdeb I drew it out on paper (not to size) just so I could have a visual and I wrote all the sizes in cm. Then I just googled cm to inches...I then wrote the inch measurements next to the cm. Hope that helps... I've watched a lot of videos with cm measurements and figured it was easier for me to google..also the other side of the measuring tape has cm markings and I never even thought to use it..now I do😄
@CarolLiege
@CarolLiege 4 жыл бұрын
Several online converters and Asian and European makers like Keiko convert cm's into inches in 10th as if they were cm's, too, whereas inches are actually measured in 12th. If you're math challenged, it's easy to find a ruler with both inches and centimeters so you don't have to convert. Or check the measurements on your paper cutter.
@CarolLiege
@CarolLiege 4 жыл бұрын
I "googled" "printable centimeter ruler" and printed it on cardstock to make this easier for myself. Don't have to convert to 12th which aren't exactly the same as the conversion charts -- e.g. by 10ths, 1/2" is the same as 0.5, 1/4" is 0.25, 1/8" is 0.125. LOTS of good printable centimeter rules online!

Batik’s are nice and tightly woven, as the main piece. Maybe Muslin for the filter pocket.

Hello Keiko, thank you so much for showing how to make this. How can I get that filter at the end? Is that washable too? And how about the wire, is it also washable? I assume, this mask is washable in the washing machine by putting them in the wash bag? Thank you again!

I found "garden twist tie" wire in a spool at a hardware store near me. It was 164' on a 'wheel' (spool) for under $2 USD. One layer of this wire is too weak, so I make the wire 3x longer than needed, then bend it back and forth 2 times to get the right length (and 3 wires' thickness). This seems to hold its shape really well and creates a good seal around my nose (* and chin, if you add wire in the bottom)

For the wire pocket I didn't sew up the end so I can take the wire in and out to reuse. I don't think the wires hold up well in the wash, and we're supposed to wash these after each use; no sense in putting a dirty cloth mask back on.

I love your masks, can you please add a male size too? It's too small for my husband and by trying to find a fit by myself I wasted some stuff XD If you can of course. Thank you very much for the pattern.

Please clarify some differences in measurements. In Show More (under video), finished size is 16 cm x 20 cm (6.3" x 7.9") and under materials is 18 cm x 27 cm (7.1" x 10.6"). The demo measurement at 1:20 is 18 cm x 27 cm (7.1" x 10.6") and at 2:00 is 16 cm x 25 cm (6.3" x 9.8"). Thank you very much! I subscribed.

I think I can help... the fabric is cut 18cm x 27cm and the pattern is cut 16cm x 25cm, then the corners are measured and cut off. At 2:20 in the video you can see where the fabric is 1cm larger on each side compared to the pattern. This accounts for the 2cm difference. Hope I explained it ok. Stay well!

I'm a beginner sewer. Demo instructions finally sunk in that finished size is for size options only, the fabric piece is the main pattern and the octagon pattern is the inner pattern for cut outs. I missed the "do not cut out" instruction, ha! Thank you!

@@AnointedSong However, masks are meant to be washed after every use. So there's no reason not to sew in the filter if you have a washable filter.

I used some craft wire I had from when I tried my hand at jewelry making, you can order those twisty ties from amazon (if available) 500 for $11, people have used clips from folder section at the office store ( the ones you insert paper on 2 holes and fol to secure), garden wire or aluminum cans cut into strips, or paper clips. Good luck!
