Күн бұрын

After fielding the question about which L.T. Wright Genesis model would be best to own many times, the Genesis Flat or the Genesis Scandi, I decided to do a quick run down on the differences on video. I hope this helps out to make a better more informed decision about which may fit your personal preference.

Great comparison Joe! I know you love to use a bushcraft blade in the kitchen just as much as me. IF you had taken these 2 into the kitchen like you normally do people would have seen how the full flat is superior in the kitchen for slicing as well. Especially on something that breaks out easily like an apple. Thanks for sharing with us!

Great job comparing the two, Joe! Bought the Genesis (scandi) for my wife ;) at Blade last year and won it's little brother, Next Gen, minutes later. Messed around some with the flat grind carving a pot hook yesterday and found it very capable. Love the combo!

I bought one of the full flat grind Genesis models and was unhappy with the wasted space at the end of the blade/ricasso. If they would bring the sharp blade down closer to the handle this would be a fantastic knife in my opinion. I sold the knife off because of that. Nice comparison video. I have moved away from scandis, but I appreciate the work and you sharing this video. Thank you.

+Diopterman That is my only complaint as well. I am not sure if I want to sell it off b/c of that but I totally understand what you are saying. Being honest with you, the more I hardcore practice knife grinds aside from scandi, the more I am leaning away from them too. What grind have you moved to, if i may ask? Thanks!

Good comparison. I have the answer to which one to buy... both, plus a sabre grind :) For me, I have found that a flat grinds take less force than a scandi on deeper cuts, I believe due to the resistance once you get past the transition of the grind to the flats on a scandi. Conversely, I have found scandi grinds split wood better because there is less metal in contact with the wood.
@feralwoodcraft
@feralwoodcraft 8 жыл бұрын
+Mark Young (Shunpyke) I've found these two to be very comparable in splitting tasks. Maybe it's just LT's design. He does have it thinned down really well so it does perform in many ways much like a scandi. Thanks!

As you said, the heat treat is great on LT's knives. Really a thoughtful review of the Genesis knife with both grinds. Have a Genesis in Scandi Grind and really enjoy it. But might end up with a Flat Grind Genesis. Either way like you said, it is mostly preference. Thanks for the video!

+Larry Norris Thanks for watching and for the feedback Larry. Yeah it really is preference overall. LT's knives are ones you know you can just pick up and run with and trust the craftsmanship side of the blade to be right on imo. (I am sure there are "burps" here and there but overall, they just work)

+papaschuette Good observation! I thought of that before filming. I weighed a similar lanyard and it didn't even register on the scale (the scale only goes in .05 increments). Oh I fully realize it is apart of the 1/10 but it's not a significant portion. Thank you for the support, as always!

Interesting comparison of two identical knives, except for the grind. For me, the weight issue was a big plus for the flat grind knife. Concerning the curls: I was not quite sure which one you prefer. Sorry, I might have misunderstood. I am led to believe (by KZfaq videos) that Scandi grind is vastly superior, and have come to understand that to be a PROPER "Bushcraft" knife, it MUST be a Scandi ! However, it seems to me that the ONLY thing that Scandi is supposed to do better is make fine curls! Another thing; one thing is abundantly clear - Scandi grind knives are notoriously difficult to sharpen in the field! Even in a workshop with numerous tools it is quite difficult. On the other hand, flat grind knives with small secondary bevels can be given an edge with very small, light stones that are very easy to incorporate into other gear. To me, this is a definite advantage not often addressed by the pro-Scandi lobby. Lastly, I'd like someone to explain what specific outdoor tasks that Scandi knife CAN do, that the flat grind CANNOT do, and why not.

I like to carve so I tend to lean twards a Scandi. I am not a fan of convex grinds I find them a pain in the back side to sharpen. I have to think the flat grind would be better for processing game. A full flat with a convex grind would slice through meat like a light saber. Have you tried one of these knives on a deer or some other kind of game? Right tool for the right job! great video Joe.

+Adventure Time Outdoors I have processed game with the scandi Genesis but not the Flat model. Do you have a ceramic rod and a strop? Those are (in my opinion) the best tools for the job of touching up a convex. Thanks!

Is the tip on the flat ground Genesis brittle in your use? I've l had a Scandi Genesis and looking at my new flat Genesis it has a VERY fine tip. I actually broke the tip off of my bark river aurora doing a bow drill due to the extra fine tip. I guess that made a bit paranoid.
@feralwoodcraft
@feralwoodcraft 8 жыл бұрын
Nope, not a bit and there were many bow drills made with that knife before I gave it away. That surprises me about the Aurora. I should have one in my hand relatively soon and I look forward to seeing what that is about. Thanks!

@hhyyuu667 8 жыл бұрын
I believe I'm just used to the broad tip on Scandi knives. The aurora has about the finest tip I've ever seen on a bush knife. Back river took care of it, no questions asked and gave it a slightly blunter tip. Haven't had any issues since. Thanks for the reply!

I prefer the Scandi when I'm carving green wood, and I prefer the flat grind for non-wood working tasks. But I've never before used a flat grind knife that had a secondary bevel, and I won't again. I think the Scandi is also much easier to sharpen in the field, particularly if you have to sharpen with something that isn't a large, expensive stone. I also don't believe it's the secondary bevel makes the edge stronger. You don't need a secondary bevel to make the edge thick. A true sabre grind is a perfect example. Putting a secondary bevel on a flat grind makes no sense at all to me. It defeats the whole purpose of a flat grind. I have learned I'm not nearly as fond of A2 steel as I thought I would be. But I don't beat on any blade, regardless of the steel. In more than fifty years in the wild, I've never yet found a case where I needed to hit a knife with a club.
