An overland truck is like a brick! When it comes to aerodynamics that seems to be the case with the average Overlander. The Leviathan project is different and in this video we are taking on the help of @Airshaper, an online computational aerodynamic analysis tool, to eek out a few more MPG. In the analysis, we will look at the drag coefficient of a typical Overlanding truck, (that brick we mentioned) the original Leviathan model and a new model, trimmed and tweaked as dictated by the analysis results.
Thanks to Wouter Remmerie and the @Airshaper team for helping “shave some drag” off of the Leviathan project so that we can save some fuel between off-roading adventures!
Go here to see a video by @Airshaper as they describe the analysis: • Overland trucks - Incr...
If you have need for any aerodynamics work, be it aircraft, drones, sports equipment, race cars or an overlanding truck, check out Airshaper.com for a budget friendly/ user friendly, analysis tool.

Very interesting. Maybe you can add a nose to create smoother side edges, instead of the impossible way of changing the existing nose

Is there any concern about it being top heavy? If so, what is being done to lower the center of gravity?
@BuilderCreator
@BuilderCreator Жыл бұрын
For an off road vehicle center of gravity is always a concern, especially if your vehicle is 12 foot tall. Most all of the upper structure will very light weight foam core composites; good insulation as well, to go along with the strength and weight factors.

Thoughts that came to mind are using turning vanes on the front corners might be able to help possibly integrating the mirrors? (If you run mirrors.) You see these on the front of square trucks although I suspect the corner is a bit sharp. With the wheel wells some cars particularly Kia and Hyundai are implementing air curtains redirecting air out and around the tyre and perhaps partly filling in the vortex. Separation edges around the rear is another thought. Julien Edgar has some good aerodynamics analysis and modification videos.

You may have noticed that we added "air curtains" in front of the front tires on the second model. They were a bit smaller than is needed to be of significant effect. I will likely increase the size of this "dam/diverter" and make them removable for off-road.
@arrindaley3714
@arrindaley3714 Жыл бұрын
@@BuilderCreator air curtains are a specific device that looks to fill in and direct air flow around the wheels by sourcing air from the front through a duct and then past the wheels, from what I can see this is unlike your additions to your 2nd model. I'm unsure how applicable they might be as the wheels are some distance from the front of the vehicle. Here's a link that explains air curtains: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o76YZd14mczUkmQ.html

40 inch wheels. The cabin is rather tall, however, I will be building the cabin out of light weigh composites/foam to keep the center of gravity low. It should do great in off-road environments, maybe just not hard core rock crawling. Ha!

If you make a hole in the front and let the pressure out via a vent on the side, that would reduce the drag.

Could you have your radiator exhaust through the front wheel wells? Would some rounded side markers at the corners help reduce noise?

@0:43 the dark flashing horizontal lines seen in your video are from LED lightbulbs. You have one or more LED lightbulbs in that room. If you buy normal incandescence lightbulbs, that wont happen.
@BuilderCreator
@BuilderCreator Жыл бұрын
Buying a new camera (frame rate adjustment) is going to be a lot cheaper than the dozens of LED lights in those rooms, but thanks for the suggestion.
@tazanteflight8670

@@BuilderCreator A few incandescent lightbulbs will cost you $10, and will fix the problem. Buying a new camera probably wont fix the problem, and will cost more than $10. The LED lightbulbs in your room arent synced with eachother, so fancy frame rate adjustment won''t work.

I suggest the addition of a wing in the front. It will redirect the airflow without any laborious and costly modifications to the shape of the cabin.

interesting comment Leonardo - I'm working on an overlander and have been pondering the concept of a front airdam - but it would need to be set low to be effective on road, movable to give clearance off road 🤯

@@CosmicSeeker69 A properly shaped and placed wing would direct and smooth out the airflow, directing it away from the more aerodynamically troubled parts of the vehicle, without having to alter the design of the front part (of the vehicle).

I love the video, and I do not want to critize, but is this analysis not something you should have done BEFORE creating the shell? Now you're in a situation where you can't really improve the drag as the whole front is already built.

Well, over one third of the surface of the "existing" cab will be covered with composite structure that can still be shaped with influence from the aerodynamics study. Of course if aerodynamic perfection was a main design goal, then everything would look much different and would have had to take a totally different manufacturing direction than the flat plane aluminum folds.
