Nice thanks for this. I am owner of Elantra N (i think you guys call it i30n sedan over there) here in North America and I wish there were more contents on technical aspects of our N cars. Like videos of factory tours, or just explanation like how you did (just like how Honda civic type R has so much more contents), which would make these cars even more special to us owners.

Hi yes the Elantra N is the same as the Sedan N. Thanks for the comment, and I made this video because a) there actually IS a lot of good tech to talk about, and b) I knew enthuasist owners would appreciate it, and even those who don't own Hyundais but are interested in how cars work. No point doing a tech video on a Camry for example, those owners don't care how many or which wheels are driven. Hyundai doesn't have the performance heritage of Honda, but it'll catch up! And, please share!

It's hard for dealers to adjust to enthusiast buyers who know a lot about their cars, and care for them! I don't know how Hyundai is going in this regard though, interested to hear.

"N" for nuts! Thanks Robert, I don't think I could have ever gotten the low down on the Kona N at that level of detail - straight from the horses mouth (sorry Geoff!). Very interesting about adding more spot welding to stiffen the chassis (along with extra bracing). I wonder if you can talk about how that works at some point Robert? Intuitively I can see that added spot welds increases rigidity, but not sure what the mechanism is.
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 2 жыл бұрын
Don't know about Hyundai specifically, but generally more welding along a join = stiffer chassis. I think it'd be something called seam welding which is adding extra welds in strategic places on the chassis, usually around the stress points such as suspension mounts. The reason this isn't done normally is because of cost/time. When you produce volumes in the car world which are many tens if not hundreds of thousands, then every cent you save adds up. This is why carmakers skimp on things to save say $0.10 which means a saving of $50k across a 0.5m production run. The aftermarket tends not to do this as much as their volumes are much lower, and they need a differentiator. But then we're into OEM vs aftermarket..a new discussion! Anyway stiffening the chassis is a great idea, and there are also struts in N cars to help. Actual functional struts, not shiny bits of hardparking metal. Geoff is a true car racer (this is important) as well as a tech guy so I'm sure he's been called lots of things worse than a horse :-)

Great video. I didn't realize the kona had the brake ducts setup like this. I live in the mountains and constantly warping rotors so anything helps.
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 2 жыл бұрын
Glad I could help! BTW the 'warping' rotos is a myth. Brakepads cannot produce anything like enough heat to warp cast iron. What actually happens is that the hot pads leave an tiny, invisible residue on the rotor, which then manifests as a vibration when braking. So, when you've finished a track session, never use the parkbrake and it's not a bad idea to minimise brake use when you're back in the pits so the pads don't press against the rotors when hot. N cars have a Creep Function which can be used for that, not sure if that was the intent, but it's certainly a great idea! Autos can be left in park, manuals in neutral then in 1st gear with engine off. If you do 'warp' your rotors you'll need to remove then and machine them to get the residue off.

Anyone else wish they would've just let the tech guy dive into the details he was sharing? I felt like the other guy would cut him off just when he was getting to the good stuff. I get he wanted to keep things simplified, but that nitty gritty breakdown was GOLD! Would've been great to do a Q&A and just let the tech go at it.
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 2 жыл бұрын
Actually it's not so much simplifed as speed. The video is already quite long, and there's a choice between going into a lot of depth on 2-3 subjects, or covering them all at a higher level. That is why I kept quickly summarising and moving on, because I had clock going to see the time. It would be possible to do 2 hours on brakes alone!

I love the design for the most part but it's still an SUV/CUV, why skimp on rear a/c vents, power seats both sides, memory seats/wheel/mirrors, wireless carplay, full HD surround cameras, power folding mirrors that also turn down when in reverse, smart cruz control, puddle lights, projector based LED headlights, etc?

@carloscervantes836

@@L2SFBC They are using a car model that is already out so they save on tooling and such, not even offering upgrade options seems short sighted. The lower tier N line has SCC and this doesn't best I can tell, why gimp that? Wireless Carplay is something also offered but gone here. Power folding mirrors not in US, etc. I own this car BTW.
@carloscervantes836
@carloscervantes836 2 жыл бұрын
@@L2SFBC I should also point out I'm currently trying to figure out why FCA seems like it would do little to nothing on the N and I believe it might be because its missing the radar which is also used for SCC. If this is true that they removed radar and are relying on the camera only for FCA, that is one hell of a mistake. I hope I'm wrong.

I'd be interested to drive your mother's Pontiac, and why you think the N car torque steer. It's not as pure as a rear-drive car, but it's definitely well sorted - you can see in the video an example of actual torque steer on a 'sports' car vs the i30 N.
