After we bought our house, we stopped using it. We live in the desert and the thought of one of those moths catching fire, dropping down and starting a brush fire in the middle of the night was too great. We are going to put it up in our chicken run, less fire risk there. We have the run built and the coop is up but, needs to be finished inside. I just haven't been motivated enough to buy the chicks yet. I will make a video showing the results after everything is finished.

I have an older huge Flowtron I bought in the late 70's and that thing is still running with it's original bulbs one bulb has the same UV colour as yours but the other is like those black light bulbs used to check your admission stamp to a rock concert. The beauty of those is that whenever they fry any bug, that in turn creates a small downwind Co2 trail the mosquitos actually follow from hundreds of yards away.
@johncuervo3019

I never looked it up but I figured that was the only reason I would have so many mosquitos without any attractant added. Sometimes it would get so covered that you couldn't even see the light on. Now after a bug gets stuck on it, it will stop zapping after a minute or so. Some bugs catch on fire and some make it stop working

Just a suggestion I always hang a 5 gallon bucket with a rope underneath it will catch a lot of bugs that are zapped and not killed. Many will fall in the bucket and die where otherwise they could recover and move on.

I have an original one of these from the 80s and it still works fine to this day. I had to fix it a couple of times because the wire for the high voltage grid had burned insulation and was arcing to the metal housing. Some plastic tubing did the job. I mounted a piece of metal roof edge underneath it and it gets tons of toasted bugs. The birds love it in the morning.

They all have one design flaw. The top becomes brittle and cracks when in the sun for a long time. Only 2 screws holding the top plastic to the unit. Flowtron sells replacement tops as they often break.

Thank you sooooooooo much. I LOOOOOOOVE watching bug zappers. Last year, 2015 we had a bug zapper. We actually went through two. One we had for like four days, and I was the first one to notice It was broken, cause the light was on, but no zapping Dad had no idea even though I told him, and then a week later of me nagging him to look, he did, and discovered a wire was burned out. I loooooved to watch the bug zapper at night, sometimes sitting outside underneath, or almost underneath for up to three hours one evening. After we got the new one, wehad it for about two months, then I went into the hospital in September, and was in for 28 days, undergoing three operations, then having to have CPR like four or five times, and the Drs. knew the only reason I kept begging to go home was so I could continuemaking the coffee for my Mom and dad, like I LOOOOOOOOOVE doing, and also to watchthe bug zapper. by the time I went home with a trach, and a ventilator Dad unplugged the bug zapper. Dadleft it out throughthe winter after I warned him that'd be a bad idea, and then on the first day of march, I begged him for hours not shutting up until he letme plug it in, and what do you know? The thing had the light, but didn't zap, and then the blue light went out. Dad never let us get a new one. I LOOOOOOOOOOVED watching that thing every single night!!

Wow, that’s not near as powerful as they used to be. Why have they decreased the power so much? Last one I had was 30 years ago. I have thinking of getting another and have noticed that the manufacturers don’t tell the output power now. Why not?

The modern cheap ones use a circuit board with cheap electronics. The old ones and the flowtron models use the same technology used in the old ones, a basic high voltage transformer. The reason the bugs are stuck in the grid in this video is probably because the insects got dried out before they finished being zapped. But I think the grid current on the flowtron is much higher vs the cheap circuit board ones.

I have the same unit. I scares the hell out of my dog when it pops a bug...and doesn't seem to catch any of the annoying bugs (gnats or skeeters especially) - just good bugs which I've never even seen bothering me. Most pest bugs don't care about blue light....they are attracted to CO2 or other chemicals that indicate animal presence. The mosquito attractant is the only thing that will make it attract skeeters - I would have low expectations. If you decide to keep it, situate it away from the house so you don't bait bugs to your area. It's a waste - and may even reduce your beneficial insect population....leading to even more bad bugs for you. :( (Wish I had placed a review on Amazon when I bought it since it has such overwhelmingly positive reviews - no indication of the downsides.)

L2Survive [Sorry this is so long...I'm just wordy! Trying to be helpful , I swear! LOL] Anything is possible and I've never been to Washington State, but just to give perspective on the mid-atlantic area where I am (Washington D.C.-area).. It is in large measure a swamp - much of it having been drained and the streams buried under all the neighborhoods. The summers are hot, wet and humid, the winters are wet and mild - I doubt anyone further north has bugs the way we do here. If that weren't bad enough (bug-wise), my little suburban property borders a preserved wetland. BUG CITY! Further, the gnats I have are vicious, focusing on attacking eyes, nose and ear openings. I've been chased out of my own yard by them on many occasions. I still haven't gotten a positive ID on them, but I suspect they are these guys: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceratopogonidae. These are not the gnats that buzz around your food or just swarm over the lawn in clusters. ;) (There are probably thousands of kinds of gnats...mostly GOOD GUYS who are plant decomposers.) My gnats also only seem to be out during sunlight hours. Gardening at night has been known to happen in my yard. (Though not often.) That's already more typing that I wanted...to sum up, I doubt you have more bugs than me and I doubt they are as annoying. ;) Also, if you were able to ID the bugs in the pile at the bottom of your zapper, most would be GOOD BUGS or neutral bugs. Unless you are using octenol to attract mosquitos, it's extremely unlikely any of the bugs in your pile are mosquitos. King County in Washington State (at least close to you, if not where you are) offers this guide, specifically guiding against the usage of bug zappers for the reasons I mentioned: www.kingcounty.gov/environment/stewardship/nw-yard-and-garden/yard-talk/episodes/13-good-bugs-bad-bugs.aspx My curent plan for dealing with the gnats is to eliminate as much open-lawn (and open-woodchip) area as possible by planting more non-grass plants and including some raised beds and mounded plantings. The hope is that this plan will reduce the available habitat for them and, by increasing texture of the soil (non-flat so more areas can dry out between rains) and variety of plants/flowers, and therefore increase the attractiveness of my property to even more good bugs and birds, including gnat predators. Good luck with your bugs in any event!! :)

NTACvOS Oh! Get yourself some Skeeter Beater™ if you're getting personally harassed by your bugs. It's way better than DEET sprays and is made from plant oils (like geranium, peppermint and rosemary). It's VERY smelly though, so you won't want to be inside with it on. :) I apply it to my shoes and hat when I'm outside and get from 20min to an hour of protection on a hot, sweaty day. (And I remove the hat and shoes before spending time inside.)

L2Survive Ew! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bug_zapper#Drawbacks Never even thought about that second one! One key quote from the article: "A study over a summer found that 13,789 insects were killed, of which 31 were biting insects." and there's a good citation for that on Wikipedia if you want more info. :) I think flies are the main target we'd care about using a zapper. Or yellowjacket's/wasps if you need to target a nest. If flies and yellowjackets aren't the main problem, a repellant is probably the best solution for the bugs that bug you and me. To make a zapper work on skeeters requires an attractant. May as well buy personal repellant IMO....then it goes where you go for 100% coverage. LOL
