3 things. 1: i beg of you to look at other weight classes as well, us bigger guys like to bully each other rather than be explosive (lower belts) and would be interesting to see. 2: a break down of the most common sequences before the sub. 3: PLEASE ask some of your friends of viewers that has computer science or stats experience to help you organize the data into a multi file csv format. This will allow pivot tables in excel, aswell as someone like me to pull it into a database and make a dash out of it. I suppose a "blob" format will also work, or an event driven data format. blob being a single file per match with stats in the file, and event driven file format is something akin to a IOT device alarm system, where the file contains events like [0:30 == single leg attempt;0:45 == takedown defense spawl] it all depends on how your raw data is structured. you could also just dump it out there and people will make sense of it all on their own. #after typing all this, you could also mean that do you want the data to just be free, or for those that buy a course, or for those that sign on for a news letter. But leaving everything as is just in case.

I have been thinking about annotating a bunch of high level bjj matches by sequence of moves to a submission and running some algorithm on it to compute things like, given your current position, what transition gives you the highest probability of getting a submission. Also, the best sequence of moves to get a sub, most probable way to get from one position to another, etc. I considered the weigh class of the match as well, so you could compute the same thing but for a specific weight. Annotating would take a long time and have to be consistently done. The problem definitely isn't trivial.

@ss00mm11 i want to apply my knowledge on AI and behavioral trees / statemachines to make a video on explaining jits using computer science. Im extremely lazy, tho. I think if the annotation can be crowd sourced, it would make everything so much easier. Unfortunately, i dont think AI will help with that yet.

Im always surprised by how often people let their back get taken learning/using escapes from mount by turning on your side style escapes seem to always give back exposure. People need to learn handcuff escapes from mount to come back up on top in their open guard or using Kipping/elevator escapes to get leg entries or returning to your own open guard. There are so many better attacks from the back compared to mount its better to let them mount you if they pass your guard, Even side control is a harder position to defend than mount

rewatching It makes more sense to pull guard in my view. 70% of submissions come from RNC and Heel Hook and armbar comes next. Even though the back is the position with the most submissions, if you add all the positions of leg tangles, Cross ashi, 50/50, Inside Ashi, etc. We have a good number of positions that we can immediately submit or sweep to get to the top with advantage and then chase the back

wonder if you have any thoughts on guard passing at lower weights i think garry tonon was caught off guard by this because you need weight to fight legs and for some reason legs dont scale with weight classes in the ufc jose aldo has the same leg reach as stipe miocic i think this is the reason there are so few guard passes at the lighter weight not because they have better guards but because they dont have the weight to effectively defeat the strength and dexterity of the legs

Hi, this is amazing work and something that grappling needs very much. But one point I think is important to focus on when doing this kind of breakdowns is the question of why the states look like this. And I think you are going there in some part. Like why are these specifik armbars so common in these posetion. So the armbar from the back could be because of the defend of RNC and triangle so armbar is the best option. The same reason single leg is the highest scoring move in folk wrestling. Not because the singel is the most powerful takedown. Because mechanicly that the dubbel leg. The singel is the highest scoring because people defend the dubbel leg so much. So to sum upp we all need to ask more why question when we are doing statistical breakdowns. And you are on the right way❤

Have you more granular data on the Heel Hooks, e.g. , How many finished where Inside versus Outside? Regarding Armbars, you had mentioned the vast majority finished from the back, e.g. one of your clips, was from Usherio Senkaku/Rear Triangle, do you have an accounting of how many armbars were finished from inside a triangle, aka a “triangle assisted armbar”? I’ve a hypothesis of sorts regarding execution percentages of upper body closed wedges, as opposed to open wedge armbars. Additional I’d be curious if there was a frequency with the 3/4 Armbar, or if they tended toward the standard leg arrangement.

In nogi, the majority of my subs come from north-south choke. I feel it's an underrated and high-percentage submission and has the element of surprise due to its rarity. The most popular submissions here are clearly battle-tested, but I think everyone should try to have a joker card up their sleeve and find a good relatively uncommon attack to perfect as well as being solid in the top 5. Thoughts?
@LIMIBJJ

The North-South choke is solid but I think going to NS does not connect well to the general Mount / Back-Mount strategy. Marcelo was never great at Mount and would hold from Side-Control much more than we see modern competitors doing. He also had short arms and didn't like Darces, Arm-Triangles or Kimuras, so the NS choke was a logical option for him.

I'm have designed a rating system for submission grappling using the Elo rating system and Microsoft's TrueSkill as baseline models. I would love to run a iteration of your raw data on my system. I'm a mathematician and this is my research project. Would love to collaborate with you
