Puccini’s music and Richard Jones’s production capture the joy and heartache of young love in Paris. Sonya Yoncheva, performing the role of Mimì, sings Donde lieta usci to Charles Castronovo, performing Rodolfo.
Richard Jones perfectly captures the blend of tragedy and comedy in La bohème, and provides an acute analysis of Puccini’s young would-be artists and their lovers, the soulful Mimì and spirited Musetta. Spectacular designs by Stewart Laing evoke both the poverty of the bohemians’ attic home and the splendour of Paris’s shopping arcades on Christmas Eve.
Puccini’s score is one of his most beautiful, with highlights including Rodolfo and Mimì’s introductory arias and love duet in Act I, ebullient music for the chorus and soloists in Act II, and Mimì’s poignant death scene, over which the composer himself wept. La bohème received its world premiere at the Teatro Regio, Turin, on 1 February 1896, and its Covent Garden premiere the following year. It is currently one of the best-loved operas worldwide, and the opera most performed at the Royal Opera House.

Tuve la inmensa fortuna de escuchar en vivo esta pieza, como parte de las propinas que Sonya Yoncheva nos regaló en su recital en el Palau de les Arts de Valencia de 2021. Maravillosa y encantadora. Lo canta con una sensibilidad que pone la piel de gallina.

👀, the little old 🐧saw her twice as medee in berlin & she was outstandingly as an singer and actress she gave us the most thrilling medea since callas there were none of any vocal issues not even a hint ✨🖤🎼🖤✨ & also her tosca in berlin was an intense moving experience without any vocal or technical issues ✨🙌🏻✨

Plastically I prefer Zeffirelli production, especially act 3, but the actors work is very good for roh Bohème... We are completely inside and it creates a lot of emotions, simple things

Despite her unsteady top her voice for the most part still sounds great. She always had a spreading top. To my ears it hasn't worsened over the years.

For the high register her voice is fluctuant, depending of the time in the year and health condition... For all the rest she is crazy good, musicality and nuances

@@dragicaklomp9810 I have seen roh Bohème 4 times in cinéma...! Each time with tears in the eyes at the end... For high notes, maybe she was better in Met à few years ago for Bohème, less vibrato and more stable high voice... But she remains a very good Mimi! In the passage "Sono andati..." in act 4, her voice is completely astonishing and we wonder if someone can sing better this moment, even the great divas from the past! :) I saw her in baden baden singing Desdemona last year, and she was close to ideal, without problem on high notes

@@davidgray5964 I also had the luck to Yoncheva live.. as Mimi at the Staatsoper Berlin in Januari 2016. She is very moving singing actress. And Desdemona is also a great role for her. Critics on KZfaq exaggerate when they say that her voice is in ruins.

I heard her live in one of her breakthrough performances of Faust at the ROH back in 2014. Her top back then shimmered, so I can confirm that the unsteady top is definitely something that has gotten worse since then. Note too how a lot of her vowels, particularly in the lower-middle, are now bottled and not clear (e.g., 0:03, 1:05, 1:59, 2:40, 3:09). I think she is a huge talent, and I like her sort of timbre. So I say all of this with regret.

Donde lieta uscì al tuo grido d'amore, torna sola Mimì al solitario nido. Ritorna un'altra volta a intesser finti fior. Addio, senza rancor. Ascolta, ascolta. Le poche robe aduna che lasciai sparse. Nel mio cassetto stan chiusi quel cerchietto d'or e il libro di preghiere. Involgi tutto quanto in un grembiale e manderò il portiere... Bada, sotto il guanciale c'è la cuffietta rosa. Se vuoi serbarla a ricordo d'amor! Addio, senza rancor.

Her voice was gone after around 5 years sing roles far too heavy for her normal sized lyric soprano. She did a ”Anna Netrebko” but more than twice as fast...

A lot of sopranos would like to be compared to Anna Netrebko!! After hearing her the last year's in Met or ROH...! Anna Netrebko is fantastic... The voice of sopranos is changing with the time, and some mistakes can be done with too heavy roles... In the case of Sonya, it's true she sang Norma and Tosca very young, and now she sometimes has large vibrato or unstable top voice (no very high notes anymore)... Her voice is fluctuant for high register, but so beautiful... I saw her in Desdemona in baden baden, she was crazy good, and also in Imogène in Madrid she was fantastic (only high notes not perfect)

@@draganvidic2039 Not sure it is worthwhile to continue the conversation with you after hearing such stupidity... If you compare to the best of opera history, sure they are under, but Netrebko and Yoncheva are two very good sopranos... Look on opera internet websites the post of specialists who know opera from the 50ies and 60ies... And you will see that the don't say the same as you... ;)

It's due to the fact she sang very heavy role very young (before 35 years old) such as Norma or Tosca... Also her voice is now larger and has become more beautiful in low register, but in the same time she lost the highest notes that she had when she was 25 35 years old...(singing Manon or pêcheurs de perle or...) For Bohème maybe she was better for high notes, less unstable or with less vibrato, in Met a few years ago... But I heard her in Desdemona in Baden Baden last year and she was fantastic even in high register... So there is no definitive point of view. The voice of sopranos is changing with time... Even Callas has a few voice problems in some periods, and everybody forgot about it...! Sonya is a great musician and has a great musicality, and somptuous "timbre". And she transmit a lot of emotions in her voice, which is for me the most important for a lyrical artist... The compréhension of the role, the interpretation and the emotion :) After this, if you compare to the best of opera history in the 50th 60th or 70th, you will say maybe that it's not as good as great divas did... But it's already very good!!
