There are so many opinions on which espresso machine is the 'best'. I like to look at things differently and think about which one suits me the most. Once you have quality components and build then it's all about how the machine functions and if that suits your style for making coffee.

I wish I could afford the Linea Mini and a decent grinder instead of my roughly 15-20 years old bean to cup Jura Impressa :) I dialed in the coffee on my machine as precisely as possible, and I’m usually fine with it until I go to a cafe to have an espresso. Then I really feel that I’m not getting the same beverage at home.

I am looking to get the new Linea Micra to replace a Rocket Appartamento. The Rocket is having a few problems with the pressure stat and requires lots of work to get it right. It will take some nerve to lay down that kind of cash for an espresso machine but I do like it. I wish it had a shot timer but not luck. What do you think of the new Linea Micra?

I've done so many taste tests with the machines that I've formed a pretty robust opinion about them over time. In my tests I used the same coffee, dose, basket, temp and extraction time and yield. The taste was identical to me with no discernible difference. This changes a little when you use low pressure pre-infusion but not a great deal.

Good video! I was (and still am) tempted to get the Linea. One thing I cannot live without is the timer. I can't believe they couldn't put a simple timer for a machine that costs over $5K U.S. However, I see you have a mod and have a nice timer installed on your Linea. Can you please tell me what it takes for this to happen? Thank you in advance! (Don't bother... I saw your answer in one of the comments! Thank you!)

I really like the linea mini but I think for just a dual boiler is tooooo expensive, better to spend a bit more and buy the GS3 or just buy the Rocket R9 one.
@homebaristacoach9183
@homebaristacoach9183 2 жыл бұрын
If you want a dual boiler there are much cheaper options. What you will find though is you typically get what you pay for. You can buy an E61 dual boiler for much less with PID and rotary pump but the E61 will not give you the temperature stability of an LM due to the integrated brew group design. I like LM because they haven't just bolted an E61 onto a silver box, rather they have done R&D to develop what I think is a superior grouphead design. I mean, 1961 was some time ago.

I disagree on the notion that you need experience before diving into the mini. If anything it’s very easy because it’s very mechanical. There isn’t a lot of other factors that you have to think about like boiler temps and ramp times. Some of the dual boiler Profitecs or Rockets internally are just as good but the mini your paying for the name and the external design. The machines are all roughly the same on how to use them. You have to learn to dial a shot on a Breville the same as you do on a mini. Find the right dialed grind, level it, apply the right pressure and put it under the spout and the machine does the rest. Now the outcomes maybe different d/t other variables but the process initially is the same for the all the machines. I would find the mini is easier puling a shot than a Breville because the quality of each shot is better with the mini. That’s if you have a quality grinder and everything else is the same. Breville Expresses stock grinder is shit. So you automatically are already starting behind the eight ball.

Hello, how do these machines compare to the elektra micro casa a Leva or the verve. I am thinking of purchasing an espresso machine and have narrowed my choices to those along with the linea mini.
@homebaristacoach9183

Graeme, thanks for the question but I have never used an Elektra before so cannot compare. I have used the LM Leva and they are just very different machines. I personally did not enjoy the experience of using the Leva as I found it too complicated, unlike other spring loaded lever machines which are very simple. It really depend on your personal criteria for the machine you select. As an example, do you want volumetrics? Pre-infusion, flow profiling etc

@@homebaristacoach9183 “Could fit to almost any other machine” - but no other machine have that. Slayer is more technical and for true coffee passionate lovers. You will have *with the right grinder the best in the world espresso with any specialty coffee. Other machines are just easy to use, so most people like that convince which is fine. On the side note that looks so sexy, that’s just a plus.
@homebaristacoach9183
@homebaristacoach9183 2 жыл бұрын
@@Dejan_23Unlimited I have to disagree. The Slayer has no additional technology other that the saturated grouphead, which is a great design. It uses a very simple needle valve to adjust the flow of water. Other than that it's just a pump and boilers in a nice looking box. Think about the price difference, the 1grp Slayer is almost double the price of a Linea Mini and the only difference is a needle valve. Once you start using them for a living and pulling them apart you get to see how similar they are. A Slayer needle valve mod costs $1400 AUD which is a fairly cheap upgrade.

Just a little feedback - I watched the video waiting for the actual information to be presented. It never came. If you want to make videos that people can learn from then qualify your statements. Instead of just stating that a machine is good for "Single origins" explain why you think that is the case. This hobby is filled with myths and unfounded opinions, like the coating on burr sets will make a different cup of espresso and "this machine is good because thats what I have" If I bought a LMLM it would be because it has really nice steaming capabilities, IIRC the GS3 have very good temp stability, it would have been nice to have been educated

How can one pay over $5000 for a machine without a PID including the count down counter? They should be confident one will move up to the GS3 without having to consider a PID as one of the considerations. I think it is a big miss. It makes la marzocco appear to be a clueless company. I know that is not true but is still makes me shake my head asking why such a big miss.

@@homebaristacoach9183 that's good to know but I am pretty sure it doesn't have a count down timer. It has a step wheel they call a PID controller. Does it show the temperature on the dial? If it does then partially happy. The no timer is still a big miss. Searching while writing. Apparently the wheel has temperature values. I still believe one should not be forced to goto the GS3 for a freaking PID. There are so many other features on the GS3 that adding a real PID that includes a timer should not destroy the group wanting to purchase the higher end machine. Not including a PID, with timer, a digital display is stupid. I can just buy an ECM Synchronica and know I am going to have a great machine. Is it as good as the mini? Maybe not but ECM thought of the customer and that means something.
@homebaristacoach9183

@@penultimatename6677 I believe you are confusing a PID with a digital display, they are different things. The GS3 has a PID, digital display and timer. The Linea Mini has a PID and uses the LM App as a digital display which includes a shot timer. Yes you can always buy an ECM, which are great machines, but in reality an E61 grouphead will never be as thermally stable as a saturated or integrated group. The quality of espresso is what LM consider when they think about the customer.

I will add actually worse. It should have the digital display. Putting temp settings etc one may change on occasion on the app makes sense. For everyday use I want to view it on the machine. The water temperature and countdown belong at eye level on the machine. I don't want to have to always open an app to see it. To the point I never use the scale timer. Always use the counter on the machine.

Looking at the comments, it seems fair because you don't seem to be over, underestimating, or receiving a sponsor for any one machine. I wonder which machine you would choose if you enjoyed light roasting (extraction is a little tricky) espresso and latte at home. I don't care about price or brand value. I am using Weber and Lagom grinder, so I don't have to worry about the grinding quality. Various E61 head machines have been used, and it is not only difficult to maintain constancy, but there are also many drawbacks in the process of extracting only a few glasses.(There was a best shot pattern. After using it for a long time...) In my experience, I thought I should avoid machines that cost too much electricity, such as too large boiler capacity, too long preheating time, and no water bottles. Now, I am using a Crem-one machine capable of variable pressure(Depending on the flow rate) and gradual pre-infusion, but I can feel some disadvantages.

Thanks for the comment. I certainly have no affiliation with any coffee machine companies as you have stated, both machines were paid for by myself and my partner. Even light roasted coffee I still prefer the Li ea Mini. For context, I'm a roaster and barista so manipulating an espresso machine is my profession. I don't find huge differences in flavour output with the GS3 but perhaps in the future I will mod my Linea for pressure profiling with an EMP mod from The Coffee Machinist.
