Ethan Liebross didn't want to take out more loans for medical school so he decided to convert a 2015 Ford Transit into an off-grid home to live in for his four years of school.
With some help from his dad on the off grid system, Ethan worked 9-to-5 for two months to create a vehicle with the details of a modern home: butcher block countertops, custom-cut memory foam mattress, a gas range and a stainless steel sink with a pressure washer.
UCLA medical school sits in the pricey Westwood neighborhood of LA so most of Ethan’s classmates are paying $1800 a month rent for a studio. Ethan appreciates not having to take out more loans, but he also hopes that living this way will help make him a more compassionate doctor.

Thank you all for watching, and thank you to Kirsten for her beautiful storytelling. It is a privilege and honor to share my story with you all. Your kind words mean the world to me. I want to be clear that living in a van by choice is much different than living on the streets because of life circumstances that forced the decision. For me, this was a choice. While yes, part of this had to do with wanting to save money, there is more to the story. I am doing this because I enjoy the simple life. I enjoy challenging myself to find water, to find a place to shower, to cook with few ingredients, etc. It’s a really beautiful practice to go fetch your own water or bike around to find a shower; it makes you deeply appreciate the little things most of us take for granted. Sadly the world of medicine has become a world of money and greed, driven by profit rather than compassion. And I’ve come to the realization that if I really want to practice medicine selflessly and if I really want to make a difference, I need to create a life for myself that doesn’t require a lot of money or things. I have dreams of becoming a really, really amazing physician, someone who listens, understands, and really cares, and this act of living in a van, I believe, is helping me grow into that very person I so deeply aspire to become.

as a soon to be medical student who is really concerned about the rapid privatisation of health care in my country, your commitment to this lifestyle is really inspiring. your general motivation for choosing a simple life really resonates with me. i wish hospitals weren't run like a business and didn't hinge so much on the pure goodwill of selfless doctors to tackle corruption. but until we see better times i take comfort in knowing that there are people like you in the field who truly care. hope your vision stays strong throughout med school and in your practice. good luck ahead

If your memory foam mattress ever needs to be replaced, maybe consider a Japanese futon. I used to sleep on a concrete floor with a yoga mat. Our bones are supposed to reset overnight. Or that's why I hear people sleep on harder surfaces. My next bed will probably be a Japanese futon. Maybe I can find a comparison to a memory foam mattress on KZfaq.

He said most of his classmates are paying about $1600 to $1800 a month in rent, so that's $19200 to $21600 a year (incuring more debt in student loan's). So, for a $14k investment, he can live all of his student life on less than one year's rent, and recoup some of his money when he's done, by selling the van. It's a perfect solution.

This is the third college student living by choice in a van. I so admire each one of them. I'd love to see a university take the risk and make the commitment to providing student van livers with a safe place to live with water and trash facilities available - perhaps sewer disposable or porta potties. This would be just one way to alleviate student debt.

I've been getting ready to apply to DPT programs, and have read a lot about clinical placements. It is on the student for travel and living expenses, and they may or may not be in one area. Every program says be prepared for this. I've been looking at van life or living in a vehicle because of this. This young man proves it looks like the right plan for me.

"Can you live in a van as a med student?" Who remembers trapper John MD? He lived in a beat up motorhome in the hospital parking lot and didnt give 2 sh%ts what anyone thought. I love this kid! He is going to make an excellent doctor. Humility and compassion abound, along with determination and ingenuity. He is kind and "loves his friends" that part was great.

Kudos to him for his build. A few thoughts: His inverter is only 1000W - not enough juice to run a “hair dryer” or “a blender.” Also, his propane tank should be enclosed and vented better in case there’s a leak - could kill him.

The propane tank storage concerned me too. Came to see if it was mentioned in the comments. I wouldn’t even cook with gas in a small space now. I’ve lived in vans and buses a lot and used gas, always with a window or roof vent open. No I understand more about how poor air quality affects health, I wouldn’t choose gas as my main cooking option unless it was outside. If I had to use it inside, I’d open both a window and a roof vent.

I would rather cook on an induction cooktop, too. But I will probably spend the extra money in order to have that and AC. The rest of my build will be more minimalist, so I should save some money there.

How hard would it be for an university like that to just build decent student dormitories. They have almost unlimited land, a ton of funds. Just throw out a hundred cars out of a campus parking lot and you can have a comfortable dorm for 500 students. It's a conscious choice they are making...

And during breaks - you can just get out and actually afford going on a little trip! Love it!

Van life is huge and wonderful! Many have begun living in vehicles due to the outrageous cost of living, and then the freedom that comes with it brings more people. The lack of waste and materialism are a beautiful side effect of the simplicity of just downsizing. Unburdening oneself of all of the wants and getting back to needs. I love it! I lived in my van for two years. It has ruined sticks and bricks living for me forever.

What a nice and talented young man. He will go far in life. Van life is a life style, some choose it for freedom, and some choose it for economic reasons. I believe professionalism has nothing to do with what dwelling one lives in or the vehicle one drives, professionalism is how one treats people and the dedication one shows for the chosen profession, whatever that might be. If in the future, after he become a physician, if he still enjoys living in the van, i don`t see why he should not live in one. He would still be that wonderful doctor, wherever he choose to live. He obviously is well loved by his classmates, as well as his professors. He is a very impressive young man. All my best for a wonderful future.
