I've had the La Trappe, which I love, and the Maudite, which I quite like.

Maudite was the first "abbey dubbel" ale I ever tried growing up in Ontario. It was easy to find back then and to get one of the real trappist imports you would have to find an lcbo that was carrying them. It was a challenge at first for someone who really liked wheat beers, but it grew on me. also had it once in a bar in Montreal on draft and it was delicious. great little review of it.

While drinking it I was wondering what it would be like on draft. I’d imagine it gives it a little bit of extra volume body-wise, which would be really nice.

Finally had time to watch this (been binging your last couple of episodes and catching up.) I've had the Maudite a bunch of times and it's not close to being my favourite from Unibroue, but a solid sipper that's for sure. Every La Trappe beer I've ever had has been wildly high in quality. Almost stupid how good their beers are. The quad is no exception there. Great episode beer brackets!

It falls into that category of a solid sipper, for sure. Taking the time to pay attention to each category really made it shine more than it would than if you quickly drank it straight out of a can or bottle like I’ve done before. But 100% agree it’s not anywhere close to being their best beer.

I think it would be hilarious if rauchbiers became a hazy IPA-tier trend. In the last couple years I’ve seen a handful of rauchbiers by local breweries, which is probably more than there would have been a few years ago, but not many.

Wouldn’t it be? You never know, what’s more on the opposite side of the spectrum from a hazy IPA than a meaty, smoked ale. So far I’ve only seen those 2, but that’s two more than I’ve seen ever. Here’s hoping.
