"2A" Opto Style Compressor shoot out on Acoustic Guitar and bass featuring the Warm Audio WA2A, Universal Audio LA2A & The Manley Labs ELOP +. Acoustic guitar was recorded with a Warm Audio WA14 into an Api A2D Preamp and ran through a Pultec.
The Bass was ran straight into a Warm Audio WA73EQ and into Pro tools

Loved the LA2A on the acoustic. It brought the butter without the choke/squash of the Warm. The ELOP was smooth and modern sounding. A nice flavour, as well.

man the la2a on bass is fantastic. the manley really brought the bass into the forefront which can be cool too.

La2a on acoustic, Male vocals and Bass is real sweet! Usually my go to for those sources. We went a little heavy handed on the gain reduction in the video but I think that demonstrated the differences more clearly

Wow, that LA2A and ELOP are fantastic sounding. I’m a little disappointed in the WA2A especially on bass, but for the price, still absolutely decent.

Thanks for a great vid! I just ordered an ELOP+ a couple days ago…can’t wait to get it! The ELOP+ is way more versatile IMHO…being two independent channels, you get some nice stereo tracking and bus duties…and on vocals for instance, you can run them in-line starting with limiter then physically send it into the other channel for compression. Then there’s the SC HPF and the fact that it was designed to let the high sparkle through. LA definitely wins on the bass, but the ELOP is still a close second and I think it beats out the LA on acoustic guitar and (from what I’ve heard elsewhere) on vocals. As far as the price, the ELOP costs only a third more than two WA’s, and two thirds less than a pair of LA’s…to me that’s a no brainer! The WA doesn’t come close, a pair of LA’s are too rich for my blood, and the ELOP sounds amazing…so ELOP it is! ;)

Hey class video…thank you! ever tested the IGS Audio One LA 500? Would love to hear a comparison against any of the above. On another note have you heard any reports on the Serpent Audio SA76-Splice MKII 500 (heard it was a Namm Tech nominee)

@@ShredShed DO IT! I would LOVE to a video comparing our OPTO COMP to your UA Reissue ;-) In this video, the UA is the clear winner and reminds me of the same frequency response / compression character our OPTO COMP has!

NOTE: This is MOST noticeable on the bass example, where the box tone of the UA really shines, as does it's not so "plucky" attack. Much BIGGER sounding. Do you happen to have the RAW BASS DI you could send us along with the UA/Warm Compressed versions? I'd love to run that test!

The warm audio fell apart for me on bass

It sounded as though the engineers picked poor attack and release times. It didn’t work for acoustic guitar either. Very Disappointing

@@gunjabeans The attack and release times come from the T4 unit itself. I wonder if a real one was swapped in if it would help. But I agree, I normally think "I can't easily hear compression comparisons" but even on laptop speakers it was super apparent in this video. Stood out even more when I switched to my mains.

The WA unit also sounded more boxy on acoustic here. I was really hoping I wouldn't be able to pick out the difference, but I really could.

A lot of gain reduction on these sources! The WA2A can’t handle the acoustic guitar without flubbing out. I wonder what it would sound like on a more conservative setting set to “compress” instead of “limit?”

The Warm stuff is pretty mediocre across the board. Definitely a case of you get what you pay for. I had a pair of the Pultecs but dumped them without a second thought. Replaced them with the Manley stereo pultec. Amazing! It's a unique piece.

@@siriusfun The Warm Audio stuff is noisy and dirties up the signal. I had a WA76 and couldn’t get rid of it quickly enough.
