I changed my kubota from traveler to UDT2 and the difference in cold weather performance is insane. Less whine from the HST at all speeds, but it no longer bucks and jerks until it warms up; the trans operates smoothly from the instant you hit the pedal until it's warm.

That matches up with what was shown in my freezer test. Question is, how did Traveller get in your tractor in the first place? It definitely didn't come that way from the factory.

Great information. I expected much more difference in the test results. I will probably still buy what MF recommends but it is good to know there are probably equivalent alternatives.

Thanks for the recommendations. Kendall looks like it might be difficult to find around here, but the others should be doable. Aiming for late winter or early spring depending on channel income to pay for it all.

Based on some information I have learned concerning other lube products, the likely reason the UDT2 has lower levels of additives is that Kubota's blender is starting with a MUCH better base oil. The better the base oil, the fewer additives needed to achieve the desired results, and that is a good thing. The cold flow test alone should make that abundantly clear. I cough up the extra money for UDT2 because I beat the snot out of my little tractor, and I want the best product I can possibly get to maintain it. So far NOBODY has been able to demonstrate their product is BETTER than UDT2. Cheaper, maybe, but not better.

That's what I was originally thinking, but check out the round 2 video linked in the description. Even Amsoil hydraulic fluid had double the phosphorus and zinc compared to UDT2. I have a hard time believing that Kubota base oils are better than Amsoil which is a full synthetic.
@acdii
@acdii 10 ай бұрын
Kubota fluids are proprietary blends that they keep tight to their vest. UDT is semi synthetic, UDT2 is full synthetic. Kubota is pretty strict on the use of their fluid and if there are any warranty complaints on the HST they require a sample of fluid to verify UDT/UDT2 is used for warranty coverage. Mystic JT-5 is supposedly very close in content to UDT2, so that would be a good one to compare with.
@Redneck_Ed
@Redneck_Ed 10 ай бұрын
Whether each company actually classifies their blends using their company classification scale, not sure how you would know that unless someone at Kubota told you. It does seem to make sense though that the blends would be either proprietary or contractually specific to Kubota. The research I've seen showed that Valvoline makes Kubota's blend for UDT2. How did you find out that Mystic JT-5 is close to UDT2? Is there a site out there with test results?

@@Redneck_Ed Theres a thread on Orange Tractor that went over these oils. The UDT oil information I got via the Dealer from a tech who took several classes from Kubota.
@Redneck_Ed
@Redneck_Ed 10 ай бұрын
@@acdii I appreciate the follow-up and I do not mean this to be taken the wrong way, but this video is about trying to move the topic from subjective into the objective. There are gobs of threads out there where people generally say things like: I have used blank brand for 15 years and have never had a problem or I spoke to the tech and he told me blank. Tech's don't represent the manufacturer, so their info needs to be viewed in that context. For example, the tech at my Massey dealership told me to use 15W-40 engine oil in spite of the 10W-30 recommendation in the manual. Mystic's own product info sheet does not claim UDT2 compatibility (they only claim UDT). Mystic specs do not look terrible, but at least one category is way off. Mystic JT5's viscosity index of 145 respectable but nowhere near 199 of UDT2. THF base oils (including Kubota UDT2) are not proprietary as they are posted openly on their safety data sheet: 58% heavy paraffinic distillate, 1.47% polymer, etc. Mystic is >90% heavy paraffinic and no mention of polymers or things like alkyl imidazoline that's in UDT2. I don't have the insight to know good vs bad for the base composition of these products, but apples to apples comparisons are easy to do by looking at the SDSs and then add in the missing link of the lab tests showing additives packages, viscosity, and TAN. Once you have that info, then you're making an informed decision to go with the manufacturer's recommendation or go on your own with another brand. Without it, people are just buying the cheaper product and rolling the dice.
@acdii
@acdii 10 ай бұрын
@@Redneck_Ed Well, yeah, thats why I said would be good to have the Mystic JT5 tested too since it was mentioned to be compatible, but is it? I know for fact that Kubota does do oil analysis for warranty work on their HST. The only time they really bust a warranty claim is if they find 303 being used instead of UDT or UDT2. John Deere fluid in the older Kubota HST works, but does whine a bit more than UDT. I would not use it in my L4060 though but works perfectly fine for the last 20 years since that is what it came with. For me, the biggest question is what works in a pinch when UDT2 cannot be located, like what happened to me, I was swapping out filters and it dumped out a lot more oil than I had on hand and with the dealers out of stock, needed replacement fluid. So far no issues running JT5, even in the cold.
@Redneck_Ed
@Redneck_Ed 10 ай бұрын
@@acdiiGood points. I do wonder though about JT5 since the SDS shows the base oil composition as being drastically different from UDT2. Do you think there is risk in the long term in the area of internal wear and tear on parts and the hydraulic pump? As I stated in the video, I'm willing to test more samples and pay for it, but I can't pay for the oil too. I'll need help with that. I'm already in the hole about $200 on KZfaq expenses vs my channel's income this year. If I can get above water by spring '24, maybe I'll buy some more samples and run them through the tests.

Interesting stuff. What would you say about mixing brands? My lil Massey has the Permatran 821 in it because that's what it came with. Front axle looks a little low. I drove to the tractor dealership (which is a ways away from here) to get a gallon of the Permatran. They were sold out of the gallon jugs and I didn't want to buy a 5 gallon pail. But I can get the Shell Rotella at TSC and I'm told (discussion forums) O'Reillys Auto Parts (both conveniently located in the nearest town to me) has a hydro oil that is an excellent performer in these tractors. I'm leary of mixing brands. What do you think?
@Redneck_Ed
@Redneck_Ed 11 ай бұрын
I wouldn't mix in the transmission, but mixing in the front axle doesn't seem like a big deal. A lot of guys don't even run Permatran in the front, they run gear oil instead which apparently was what the older GC manuals spec'd for the front axle. People have said that Massey changed to Permatran for simplicity.

A Massey dealer in northern Maryland is recommending and selling Mag1 hydraulic and motor oil ? I used it in my 2018 gc1705 and never had a problem . I sold that and bought a new gc1725m and will need to make a decision on what to go with it , I am approaching 30 hours . Thoughts one Mag1 ?
@Redneck_Ed
@Redneck_Ed 6 ай бұрын
Sorry, I can't say. The dealer in Howard County, Mullinix, also sells an alternate brand. The guy told me it was from a distributor in Baltimore, but I never asked him for the name. Only thing I can suggest is to call Mullinix and see if Mag1 is also the brand they stock and maybe make a confidence decision based on that. Or depending how close you are to PA, there are Massey Agriteer dealers just across the line in PA that sell Permatran. If I were going to go with an alternate brand, I think I'd use Mobile One from Tractor Supply based on the testing done in this video.

I knew that comment was coming, lol. Had to draw the line somewhere. Rotella was a lot more expensive than Traveller and Delvac and Rotella also seems to have more of a track record which translates to less uncertainty about quality/contents of the fluid. If you're interested in seeing Rotella tested, the offer is out there. All you need is a new container of Rotella and sacrifice 3 oz of new fluid for the Blackstone sample.

I still can't believe the amount of people who still think you have to run Agco oil and filter. They don't make those products ,they just make a big profit on them.
@Redneck_Ed
@Redneck_Ed Жыл бұрын
I'd like to think that many of the posts are people overwhelmed by the wall of fluids at the store...ISO46, ISO32, THF, etc. The rest are people who want to hear that someone else has used a particular brand fluid in the same model tractor (i.e., they don't want to be the first) or they want to hear if someone had a problem with a particular brand fluid.

@Redneck_Ed
@Redneck_Ed Жыл бұрын
@@chrishunt5291 The testing I've done so far supports all of the above as valid decisions unless someone switches from a Denso to the lower tiered junk Fram PH model filter. For someone who has to drive a long way for Permatran, there are clearly valid alternatives. I'd like to see a dealer deny a warranty claim for someone who uses Delvac instead of Permatran. The products appear to be nearly identical. On the other hand, if you have a BX then the cold weather viscosity and low starting TAN might be a good reasons to stick with UDT2. Next up for me is the pesky hydraulic filter. I know there is at least 1 Wix alternative, but I need to cut the Denso open first to see what it's like inside. That will be a future video!
