The African Grey Parrot - a highly intelligent bird that is popular as a pet - has been eliminated from much of its west African range and the largest populations are now only found in central Africa. In the fall of 2016, delegates from around the globe met for the world’s leading forum to debate and discuss issues related to international wildlife trade - the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP17) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, or CITES. Parties considered a proposal to transfer the African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) from Appendix II to Appendix I, effectively banning international commercial trade in the species.

Yes, if you buy a parrot from a poacher, you should be in prison. If you go into the bush and capture a highly intelligent threatened species and shove them into tiny crates to die, you deserve much worse than prison. I would gladly retire to Africa to hunt poachers and protect African Greys.

@@jackhewes6642 yes I would like to Help anywhere I could my 1st Blue Front Amazo was also brought in illegally but I was able to bond with her after the Pet shop I was working with at the time let me work with her she had 1 of those9 kinda 1 of Bird's that only bonded with me she was such a smart bird she could get out of any kind of cage that they put her in she also left big impression on all the other bird's in the store because she would break into every Bird cage in the store if she didn't like the food they had she would just take it and dumb it out all over the floor!! Everytime I would walk into work she would start screaming my name until I came over to pay her some attention after I started working with her she refused to say anything at all so they basically they just gave her to me for free Cage and everything. Her voice she picked up for me I could actually carry on a conversation with her and there wasn't anything that couldn't learn by the time she was 5 year's old she had at the very least 400-500 word's that she would say My Boss's were so impressed that I brought her back to start teaching all the other bird's to talk between the cockatiel's to the Cockatoo's to speak every Bird we had in the store was talking! Ha Ha Lol!!

My Aunt owns an African grey parrot, she saved it from a terrible condition in a Spanish zoo (even tough we are from Sardinia Italy). He was about to die and my dad and her saved it, he is not capable of flying. I have been grown up seeing that parrot in the house. Seeing African Gray parrots in the wild is something that somewhat touches me, I hope they won't extinct...

I bought a rehomed parrot in Texas. It is sad to think that her parents or her grandparents, may have been wildly caught. I'd like to definitely address the sale of parrots at flea markets in Texas and other bordering states to Mexico.

I and my first had a grey African parrot in 1975 in Edmonton Alberta. Such a sweet little guy. He even spoke someItalian words as Papggalo , meaning parrot in English. We let him waddle around our little home in Edmonton, Albta

I have an African Grey Parrot that I adopted through a rescue organization. She had a difficult time before I rescued her and she is now slowly coming around. When I watch her in or on top of her cage I think how sad it is that she can no longer fly due to her previous injuries and that she should be in the wild with her flock. I am glad that I was able to help/rescue her. I am TOTALLY against taking any wild animal from it's natural habitat.

Do you have any videos on Resplendent Quetzals? They're one of my favorite birds for obvious reasons but I hardly know anything about them instead that they are hunted for their feathers. Oh one more question. Are eastern and western bluebirds different species? I am currently am in an argument over weather they are or not, I think they are.

No, they are quite easy to breed in captivity. The problem is that their demand far outstrips the supply of current breeders. This is complicated doubly so by the fact that many countries with lots of breeders have laws preventing international sale of these birds, captive bred or not, so some places you can get one for $800 and other places they go for $8000.

This make me so sad. I have a gray parrot and they are so intelligent. I bought her from a breeder. There are plenty of breeders and this does not need to happen. Even if there were still a healthy population in the wild, the death of the individual is heart breaking. They don't deserve this.

Breaks my heart. What does it take to stop this? All countries must make it illegal To import all Wildlife. Why has this not happened? It is 2020. How is it still ok to move any Wildlife from there natural habitat. This is far to sad. What does it take?

Greys are very common in captivity, the they breed very easily in captivity too, greys will never go extinct in captivity and these parrots can be rehabilotaed for the wild

100% My Brother i own an african grey and she is my life and will love her until the day i die and the way they let the pouches do that is bad and hate how they came to us but if they didn't i wouldn't have such an amazing companion, i agree with the right way the legal way, they control the wild let them breed normally and if people want to sell them still as pets the wild organization can sell them a mating pair legaly and they breed them and sell and handled properly in exporting ect... that way is a sure thing they wont go extinct :)

My uncle used to look out for an elderly neighbor. She had an Africa Grey named Sinbad. My uncle would stop in her house often, so the bird became very familiar with him. When his neighbor passed away, her children, knowing that the bird was comfortable with my Uncle and not wanting the responsibility of caring for the bird, asked him to keep it, and he agreed. That bird was so intelligent; it was amazing. What is happening to this species is disgusting. I had no idea that they were considered threatened. Humans truly are a plague to this planet

How can those horrible "people" stand to hear those poor birds scream all day. My grey only does it when I have to trim his wings, and it's one of the most disturbing noises i've ever heard. I hope the poachers are haunted by those screams whenever they go to bed at night

My heart is just breaking every time I think about this, which is a lot I do have An african grey but he was bred in captivity. The cruelty here is unforgivable. There should have been protection on these beautiful intelligent animals long before it got to this!. I pray we can bring these amazing birds back but as everything in this world being destroyed by greed, corruption and money and do not have much faith. Bless them :(

☹️☹️☹️☹️ to see those sick and dead birds really breaks my heart. My family had an African Grey parrot for years and one day my dad forgot he had him on his shoulder, walked out to take the garbage out and he flew away and lost him. I loved that bird so much.

If they are raised as pets, they pretty much have to stay that way. I wouldn’t buy one from a pet store, but I would absolutely adopt one. Mine is adopted (previous owner was old and in poor health). They are capable of loving their humans and fellow pets very much.

@@MatthewChristianMurray I do have a grey. It belonged to one of my wife's relatives, and we sort of ended up with her. It isn't anything I would have chosen, though. We do the best we can to keep her entertained and content.

What they don't want to commit is that it's due to deforestation. African Grey is not a hard to breed bird. We here in Pakistan have abudunt quantity of them and there are people I know who breed approximately 50 pairs at home. So if Africa needs them back, please let us know as we do not have wild habitat for them but we can surely save them

Oh my God, so sad. Such a wonderful, intelligent beautiful bird subjected to such evil. I feel sick. This MUST stop NOW. We have 2 African Greys that are part of our family that were born and raised in the United States and they mean the world to us. I pray someone stops the evil being done to these sweet birds.

The issue is that people can get pets despite not knowing how to take care of them. The fact that it is possable to own pets isnt the problem. A parrot in a good home is better off than a parrot in the wild.

I agree. I own a parrot, and am soon to adopt another one, but they are both from rescues. I would never buy a parrot from a pet store or breeder. I don't think birds should be kept as pets period, but since the ones I have were bred in captivity, and then discarded, they need somewhere to go.

Fortunately, grey parrots are being bred in captivity in many countries, otherwise they would have been close to extinction by now. But the sad part is that they are still rapidly declining. African Greys are extremely popular because of thier unique color and talking skills. People need to understand that wild parrots can never be trained or hand tamed although they may learn to talk. But wild birds have to be caged always.

630,000 African grey parrots are left in the wild due to the pet trade. 10,000 illger's macaws are left in the wild due to the pet trade and deforestation. It's crazy I have an African grey and a illger's macaw it's crazy.

If only people would stop keeping them as pets, like none of the birds either born in captivity or wild-caught deserve this. If you find one try to get the young ones back to African rehabilitation centers. They live a long life, a painful one at your home.

Please, if you're going to get an African Grey or any other bird as a pet, make sure you get one from a breeder or a bird rescue! Not one caught from the wild! You may have to wait a while, but the wait will be well worth it! Also, please think about getting a bird seriously. Don't get one if it's simply on a whim or because you think it would be cool to have a talking bird, and make sure you have enough time available to spend with it and train it!

Sad to see birds in this condition. But they won’t gonna extinct as in our country which is not africa there are tons on african gray breaders and population of african gray is increasing every year. Each pair of african gray breeds two times a year and lay 5-6 eggs in one breeding session which means each pair of birds giving life to 12 more and more year after year how is gonna extinct. I recently took an African Grey into my home because her first owner couldn't keep her. I know exactly the day she was hatched in the North East of the UK because I have her certificate of captive birth. I love Ruby like my own child, but I would never buy a parrot if it came from these horrific poaching and illegal thefts from the wild. Wildlife thieves deserve death. Humans need 100% improvement and they will make themselves extinct if they do not achieve it. This may save the non-human inhabitants of the planet from cruelty, exploitation and extinction. Rather a planet with no humans than one ruined by human greed and stupidity.
