I graduate in May, and start my L&D career in August! I did an externship in L&D between junior and senior year, and then applied aggressively to residencies. I had amazing grades, like within the top 5 in my nursing class, and I STILL only got 3 offers out of 6. So you’re right, spots are limited and competitive. Congrats on all your success!

@@marianaflores-cf2ki hey there! So all nurses are trained as general nurses in nursing school, you become an L&D nurse whenever you apply after nursing school to L&D positions. So all nursing schools are pretty much the same when it comes to getting an L&D position. It doesnt matter if you go to community or a well known university, just keep your GPA up and get good LOR when you are in school!

I’m in nursing school and I would like to know are there any certifications or trainings I should work on now to make myself more marketable for L&D
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
If it's offered, get your ACLS certification in school (this may be offered sometime during your critical care class). During L&D clinicals, be super proactive and try to stand out by offering to help everyone on the unit, offering to do catheters/ivs, state how much you love learning and try to see if you can talk to the manager. Choose L&D as your capstone at possibly a different hospital and do the same thing aforementioned, to get yourself "known" to as many hospitals as possible. If available in your area, do an L&D externship (this is a rare externship but still is offered in some places). If not, apply to patient care tech positions in L&D or anywhere in women's health. Live and breath L&D and don't give up applying to positions when you graduate!

are there any colleges that you recommend looking into for l&d nursing?
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
Just apply to any nursing program! All you need is a nursing degree! The cheaper the better honestly (example community college), because student loans are a KILLER. Once you graduate the nursing program, then you just apply to labor and delivery positions. Hospitals aren't really specific on which college you went to, just keep your GPA up wherever you go.

@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! It certainly helped me a lot, but I only did it because L&D was already full for jobs after I applied. Most L&D units have antepartum attached, my hospital is just so big that it's separate so you'll get the same training anyways for antepartum. So I recommend just applying to L&D instead!!

How much sleep do you get... And how do you manage to be married and work 12 hours a day, any trips?
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
I sleep an average of 8 hours when I'm working and not working, I prioritize sleep in between shifts I'm working so I feel better throughout the night. I fall asleep around 8am when I get home, and then will wake up at 5pm to get ready if I work that same night, but will wake up earlier around 3pm if I'm not working to get more out of my day. I flip my schedule on days I'm off to normal ppl schedule and just listen to my body!
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
My husband and I will usually set our schedule to be working around the same time (he's a flight attendant so this is probably easier than alot of other jobs). But we definitely make each other a priority and spend as much time together as possible when we're off! It's always worked for us😁 when he's home and I'm working he stays up late so he will still be asleep when I'm home so we can get some sleep together. Make each other a priority and everything else will fall into place❤

Is there a difference between a certified midwife and a labor and delivery nurse?
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 3 жыл бұрын
In the United States there is, I know in other countries like Europe they are about the same thing. In the US, an L&D nurse is mostly a bachelors degree, but they do accept associates in certain hospitals. A CNM is considered a masters degree and takes about 2-3 years after a bachelors to complete, they act as the provider and can deliver the babies as well as first assist in C sections.

I’ve always wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse but like you mentioned there aren’t always happy endings. The thought of losing a baby is something that scares me cause I know it happens. How often does that happen and how do you handle it emotionally?
@Romi_joy
@Romi_joy 4 жыл бұрын
I work at a huge hospital, so it happens very often. I would say it happens a lot less often at private hospitals, but miscarriages are very common and even full term miscarriages. Honestly the first time I cared for a mom who lost her baby (and still had her baby with her) hit me hard. It's not good to say, but as time passes you get used to it just like working in the ICU or ER and dealing with adult deaths constantly. I still am very empathetic for the parents and give myself emotionally to them, which is why they are a one to one ratio patient (it's the only patient we have for the night because of the emotional toll it takes on us). But for me personally, I keep work at work and my home life at home, and having a good team you work with really helps and the charge nurses really helped me with my first few times by being in the room with me.
@ashtron23
@ashtron23 4 жыл бұрын
