Today we are talking about Labrador Retriever Training. A lot of people ask us about Littermate Syndrome and how it may or may not affect one's decision to purchase or adopt puppies from the same litter. It's often said that adopting puppy siblings will lead to decreased human bonding, lack of attentiveness, poor off leash recall, and increased aggression. We have not found that to be the case.
Follow along as we take Simon and River through our normal daily Labrador Retriever Training activities and judge for yourself, whether or not two puppies may be a good fit for your family.
I hope you guys enjoy!

My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

Sadly, a lot of people who get littermates don't really take the time to actually train them and end up with dogs who cannot exist without the other. I see this often in husky groups where one dog can't go to the vet without the other freaking out about being alone. They weren't given good foundations. If you give them good foundations having littermates wouldn't be a problem.

I ran into something similar. My grand champion girl had a litter, and one of the puppies wasn't quite normal. I had to tube feed him for 3 weeks. The best thing for him was to stay home with us vs go to a show or performance home. His mother is very smart, does obedience and rally. Her son is blind and deaf on one side. He has neurological problems and runs in circles. His mom has been an excellent teacher and he's well behaved and capable of doing almost everything other dogs do. The problem? He's 5 years old and are seldom willingly more than 5ft from each other. They share a dog bed. They would eat from the same bowl if I let them. They drink water in tandem. She's sad if he's not with us, so despite not doing sports he comes with us to shows. If she's not with him, he wont eat. To be honest, we have some mental health concerns regarding them.

I have a blind cat that was raised by me and my service dog.... He helped her as a kitten, protected her from her siblings rough play and her mother's issues with her... The cat rebelled when I had to be away from the house most of every day in a week. Would tear things up since she didn't have my SD. When I retired him they stayed home together in my room. Days where my night seizures were bad and my old SD decided to sleep with my mum so he could actually sleep all night... This cat would go with him. She knows commands like a dog and everything... She's just a little slow to catch on and then obviously is mostly blind. My old SD passed 3 years ago now.... This cat has been living in my room every since. When I'm gone with my current SD she stays and cuddles the blanket her and my old SD slept and played on. It's kinda creepy in a sweet way? Basically I didn't trust anyone to take care of her needs so we kept her.... She's a loving cat, and has been adopted by our hunting cat to cuddle and roam the house when he's in. But neurological issues are so hard... Don't feel bad that your mother dog has gotten so attached to her son.... I think it might be better than having to protect him from her... Especially since that would make keeping them both and making sure his needs were met very hard. My runts mother got spayed (a stray we rescued cuz we live in the middle of no where and someone dumped her as a young kitty.) But we hurried to spay her so we could separate her to being outside when I was up and about the house... As I had my little SD and the kitten she wanted to attack on my heels. She had some eating problems, but I've always been able to get her to eat again. As a runt she was hand fed by me as soon as I realized her mum didn't have enough milk for them all... So it's ingrained in her to eat for me when I give her attention and coax her... My runt can be the cutest, but after my little SD passed ive had to be hands on when shaping her relationships with other animals in my home. (Treats for cute harmless behaviors, thump an ear for being too rough- show a toy instead etc. Now instead of claiming territory- they share as if they are cute I pet them all with no fuss haha they perch on my side when I'm laying like birds on a line haha.) We foster for a local shelter now, and the runt accepts new animals just fine.. But it's been alot of work and I'm constantly watching and rewarding behaviors... She is currently the only cat that doesn't go outside as she pleases. So I've had to watch fosters bullying her over the other cats. Her younger days were a challenge tho. Now I can sit down on my bed or lay and she's claiming a spot perched on me lol She's a very simple animal. Which while different, isn't so bad now. She doesn't tear things up and when I'm out of my room she follows me thru our house... Idk, but remove access to my room and her blanket and she goes stupid. Didn't notice she didn't follow me in my room one day and closed the door and went to sleep. She ate my favorite succulent in the kitchen window. ALL OF IT. No hopes of restarting the plant via a leftover cutting. I've lost so many plants to times like this. I've nearly given up growing them. Between her and our best hunting cat, the plants aren't safe indoors or outdoors ;-; I used to grow sweet peas with lovely blossoms... Even my dogs have helped eat them when I finally plant them in the ground ;-;

J. S. Start talking to your dog and showing them things as if they were a two year old child. Let them sniff your measuring cup and explain the steps you’re taking to make cookies. Let them taste test dog-safe ingredients. Hide kibble for them to find egg-hunt style. Make them guess which hand holds the treat. My brother has a dog that wouldn’t mind him so I took the dog for two weeks or so, and integrated him into my regular routine. When he was out in our unfenced yard, I called him every 20 minutes to give him some praise and a treat, and when I had time for a break, we would go new places, learn new things, and try weird stuff. When he went back home to my brother he stopped running away when left in the yard, stopped when reprimanded for chasing the cat, and he stopped disrupting the household with his doggy mania and obnoxious, relentless whining/barking. Of course, that only lasted about a month because my brother didn’t keep up with it. But the takeaway is that it can be tough to be “interesting” if you don’t have a lot of time on your hands like this guy does. Plus, you might not want to roll around on the ground with your dog or be climbed on/jumped on... There’s other ways you can be an interesting person to your dog, without disrupting your schedule. It starts by realizing that dogs have the rough intelligence of a small child. So if you think of them as if they are a two year old that you’re raising, you’ll start to incorporate them naturally into your lifestyle, and they will be more than happy to learn about the human world. When they learn with you and feel like they’re part of your life, they’re more likely to value your opinion, so they generally will become more people-pleasing. Also, it’s worth keeping in mind that, just like a two year old kid, dogs are very sensory/tactile animals, so just listening to your words really isn’t enough. To engage them in your life, you should give them opportunities to smell, taste, feel, and see things. Try putting your bags on the floor next time you come home from shopping so your dog can see what you got. They love it! Hope this advice is useful to you and you don’t feel like it’s condescending or anything. I’m passionate about helping people with their dogs. I love dogs and dog sports. :)

My wife and I just got two GSD litter mates, one male and one female and I've seen this brought up quite a bit. Our last GSD passed unexpectedly in July, so I knew what it would take to train them. She was great, recall was excellent, if I called her name or whistled she would be right there. We're training our new male and female the same way, only much sooner, and they are doing great. Even this morning, post breakfast potty time, they came to me on the porch even though they love licking the dew off the grass. They listen as much as can be expected for 9 week old puppies. Lots of praise and beef liver treats do the trick for these two.

I have had littermates for a while and they need a lot of work. My main issue is recall. As individuals the dogs are fine. As mates during a walk recall is not 100%. I have been searching for a long time to get training guidelines and have been met with derision and patronising commentary. Your methodology is more intelligent than Robert Cabrals and your audience is not sycophantic. If you have some guidelines or training regimes for older littermates please make a KZfaq entry and share.

My neighbors got two puppy’s from the same litter, the only problem was that they didn’t know how to train dogs... they had both of them for 3 years and for most of that they fought, like teeth and blood fight. They didn’t know how to fix it and thought that they would work it out... well yesterday they had to surrender one to the shelter because the last fight was a blood bath. Both great dogs just didn’t have a good upbringing or leader

Training two brothers right now who are 7 weeks old (our next-door neighbors have the mother). For now, I just interrupt when the fighting is too heated and distract them with a toy, chewy, or something else. As they get closer to 8 weeks of age, their fighting isn't as intense and they're more willing to stop when I tell them to quit. One of the puppies even starts looking for his toy now. I'd hate to imagine how they might turn out if I had just "let them sort it out."

Stonnie, as I am training my 3rd water dog for duck hunting, your training advice has excelled the current pup's progress. We got him when he was 10 months old, never exposed to people, noises, and smells and it was a challenge to get him to open up and break his timid ways and the cowering. Certainly the most challenging dog to get to trust me, but definitely the most rewarding. Had to go on nature walks, walks through hardware stores and the park and it has exposed him to so many various smells, noises, and people that he's actually more curious than afraid now. He is an excellent retriever, with a good pedigree, (mom and dad both are highly driven and come from good bloodlines) and at 16 months, I can already tell he will likely be the best one yet. The first two hold a special place in my heart, but this guy is certainly special. Your "unorthodox" training has helped me get through to this pup. Took me a couple months to get him to trust me enough to start his obedience training and he FLEW through the training. In a total of 4 months he's already retrieving doubles and blind marks. Introducing him to the feathers right now and slowly working him into gunfire. He's doing great thanks to you and your advice that is very strategic and helpful for regular folks like me to understand how to get a pup to obey out of trust than fear. He will likely go on his first hunt this year.

My sister has a pair of male littermates that are Doberman/Labrador mixes. One is super aggressive and has to be muzzled around people; he constantly slams into people with that muzzle trying to bite them. The other one feeds off that energy and is aggressive also, but if they are separated, he is fine. My sister didn’t train them or work with them. She is not a person who should have gotten littermates. The stupidest part is that she yells at the people because “if you don’t move, he won’t attack you!” She constantly makes excuses and tries to blame everyone around for her dog’s behavior. The mom whose child got bit is at fault because she stopped bringing her child over, so my sister couldn’t properly socialize the dog around children. As a mom, I wouldn’t bring my kids around a vicious dog with a history of biting either! Rant over! Anyways, I have two Labrador Retrievers who are not littermates, but they are good babies.

Yeah it's stupid how people think like that. I was playing in a park when I was probably around 8 years old with my brother. Some woman's Yorkshire terrier ran over to me and my brother and starts attacking us completely unprovoked. It bites my foot and I kick it with the other one to get it off me and it runs off whining back to its owner. And the owner started shouting at me because I hurt her dog by kicking it even though her dog literally just attacked a child... She didn't say sorry or anything. It's crazy how people defend their badly behaved dogs and shift the blame.

My mother has the same issue. Meanwhile my wife and I had a dog that had puppies and for various reasons we couldn’t find homes for some of them. We have a pack of litter mates and they are some of the best behaved dogs. 99.9% of the time, poorly behaved dogs are a product of bad owners. I actually haven’t met the .1% of cases where it isn’t the owner, but probability says there must be an exception to the rule. Never seen it or seen evidence of it, but it must exist somewhere.

Naomi May - Sustainable Prepper if the dog is aggressive for no good reason, check their thyroid levels. If a dogs thyroid levels are off, it shows as aggression. Your sister should try to socialize him by putting a muzzle on him that still allows treating and relaxing but not biting and reward him every time he is calm when people walk by and gradually increase the amount/closeness of people. Teach him that people+ no biting= treats.

From my experience the major downside to littermate syndrome is the codependency. We had two brothers and training was a breeze, like you said you teach one and the other one follows suit. When our more dominate dog Buddy passed when they were six the other,Cody, was lost. We were seriously worried we were going to have a Where the Red Fern Grows type scenario. Thankfully Cody was a extremely gentle and loving dog and was able to be trained as a therapy dog, he loved the work and it helped him to heal from the loss of his brother. If I ever have litter mates or another kind of bonded pair in the future I will be sure to make sure they are not as codependent.

Thanks, this helps relieve our worries. We had a litter of 7 and planned to keet 1 but 1 didn't find a home ... she was tiny and shy at showings. Now she's bonding and we sorta wanna keep the pair, they get along SO well... Been on our minds so this was great to see. Ours are nearly 5 mths. We find that we see some jealously but overall they are usually playing with one another and learning from one another! For example, when one gets a good praise, the other one wants to do what they did to get that reward. They may play hard, but as long as one isn't dominating or hurting they are good. They know that if they hurt one another, play time is over and you need that playmate tomorrow!

My neighbor across the street & I have sister German Shepherd pups. We each had older dogs; hers a lab, mine an Aussie Shepherd. When our two pups are together, they have a really good time. They seem like they could play for hours! Yet they are each gentle & respectful of the senior dogs. They each tried to sneak over to the others property to be together. We backed off their visits until they each bonded with their new families. Now they each are thrilled to get together to play and no one tries to run away from home.

We have a female rat terrier, my mother in-law has her brother, and my sister in-law has her sister. When we get together on holidays etc. they are immediately drawn to each other, have the best time playing together, but when it’s time to go they don’t whine about going to their individual homes.

Hey Stonnie- the videos are great! I have a 13 week old yellow lab that I've been working with for the past 5 weeks, and I've tried to incorporate your techniques as best as I can. She's really coming along well, and I've had a lot more fun training her with an emphasis on positive reinforcement rather than correction. This video reminds me that I will need to get her out to the creek very soon. I'm in Gettysburg, PA, so it's going to be BRISK. Best wishes, and Merry Christmas.

Same and agree. Two 1yr old australian shepherd littermates (boy and girl) are great without issues and a blast to work with, everywhere, including restaurants. They compete to be their best at everything we ask of them and share everything without guarding, including attention from us. That all said, we have jobs for each of them depending on their natural abilities. Just different dogs.

Adopted litter mates (2 male labs) this past June. Now almost 9 months old. One of the BEST decisions I have ever made. Training went quicker and these dogs are retrieving MACHINES. Took them on a duck hunt in ND and they did GREAT. Even the wife is happy we got 2 instead of 1. All that wrestling around outside just helps tire them out and we all know “A tired dog is a good dog.”

Excellent video. You gave me hope. I am a reasonably experience dog owner and am on the verge of bringing home Labrador Retriever littermates. I'd heard all the dire warnings about littermate syndrome but you've helped ease me back towards being optimistic about the upsides of homing littermates. Thank you. I understand that it will require a higher degree of energy and commitment but I feel like it's completely humanly possible to raise well mannered littermates.

Thank you so much for this video which gives me hope for my two 5-yr old LMs. I never intended getting two dogs at the same time and was fully intent on serious training. However, when my family decided on adopting the 4-mos old male we discovered he had a sister and they were roaming around together when rescued--we didn't have the heart to separate them. Well, eventually it was just too time consuming to do all the training individually and I gave up. I am looking forward to looking for training instructions on this channel to help me--thank you!

This is so helpful, Stonnie. Friend and I have been struggling to get our dogs to pay attention to us when we are out walking through the woods and fields. My 1-yr-old dog and her 2-yr-old dog are friends; they act like litter mates. All they do is wrestle and mock fight, ALL the time we are out there. They just don't stop. It is true what I've been saying for the past year -- that I am just boring. I shall tell my friend that Stonnie said we have got to make ourselves interesting. Good topic. Thanks. I'm wrestling with this question right now for my next dogs. My previous mother and son lab pair had an interesting issue. For his entire life the son got extremely anxious whenever he was separated from his mother. The mother didn't have a hint of this anxiety and she turned out to be a good mentor. They were both great dogs--polite, obedient, and attentive-- as long as I worked with the younger dog's issue.

When we got our dogs (2 brothers) we didn't know much about dog training besides things like sit and what not and unfortunately they definitely display symptoms of what seems like littermate sydrome, though mainly in that they feed off of each other's anxieties (one more than the other) and will run off together but won't run off with other dogs. Wish I had known what I know now back when we got them... It's pretty funny watching them sliding - I've got to see if I can get my dog to do that.

We have two littermates. Both male. One used to be mellow while the other tried to be a little pushy. The mellow one would just ignore his behavior. But after a few months the mellow one decided not to ignore his sibling's agression any more. Then they started fighting seriously, every time they saw each other. We started having to keep them in different parts of the house. If there is something that could fix that it would be WONDERFUL! We have the mom, and kept 2 of her puppies from a litter she had from breaking off her line and running off when she was in heat. They are between 2 and 3 years old now.

@@mystiekmelody8857 intact male dogs are much more likely to start fights with each other. it probably wouldn't completely fix it now because its been so long and once habits are formed, theyre formed and clipping them likely won't magically fix it but its a start, but neutering them would help then either hiring a professional trainer, or getting someone to help you thats at least dog savvy because you'll need 2 people to fix this, and research, research, research, multiple different training methods for dealing with dog aggressive dogs. Are they aggressive with all dogs or just each other? Is it consistently one dog starting the fights? This all boils down to the best advice I've ever been given about dogs. Don't just work with your dogs, play with your dogs. Just cos your dog's a working dog, farm dog, huntin dog, whatever, not just a house dog, doesn't mean they don't deserve all the love and fun times. I can tell how quick you bond with a puppy you're training and how well they respond to you. You know your shit.
