Who just happens to have pickles in their car? The style is suppose to be nonsexual and cute. Compared to what I've seen in fashion, Lolita is very innocent.

Yeah, calling someone dressed in proper lolita garb a "slut" is asinine, IMO. It neither shows much skin, or fits to body shapes.

people honestly cause problems for people who dress this way?.. I do not see anything wrong with it.. its kind of an old fashioned way of dressing.. cant be any worse than any other person who dresses in retro cloths.. so they like the dresses that is inspired by the classic Gothic era of fashion.. why is that a problem for some people?.. I live in the USA tho.. Here in Iowa there is a shop that will sometimes sell some authentic classic Gothic dresses that kind of remind me of what they wear here.. they can be super expensive tho as these are usually collectors items.. but sometimes people like to buy them to wear.. super cute.. I kinda wish I could wear something like that occasionally..

maybe its the city i live in or something but the people here in California are huge huge bashers of anything out of the ordinary. Basically anything that is not "normal." They will yell hateful things out their windows and sometimes throw things out the windows at me. Even when i goto San Francisco and go over to Japan town people act like I'm alien staring and pointing, it makes me wanna run away and cry T_T I need to goto one of the Lolita meets in San Francisco. Strength in numbers!

Lolita isn't a common fashion here in the Philippines that's why it's always been mistaken to be a costume and not fashion. Some people think it's childlish. That's the reason why I wanted to live in Japan. You can express your fashion freely without being judged by the community.

Style says who you are without saying a word. Remember that as you dress every day. It CAN be misinterpreted, but if you wear your clothes with confidence and love, most people with relate to you that way. If your style is misinterpreted, it is best to respond with the confidence and love that you aspire to...and remember, fashion says "me too". Style says "only me!".

That's because Seattle is AWESOME! It's the "home of steampunk", maybe not the origin but we have the biggest steampunk community in the world here! Even more than London. Seattle is such a lovely place, and you're lovely for being YOU! Unfortunately as more apartments and expensive places pop up, I think this artistic and unique free-willed culture will start to diminish. :( And now we don't have steamcon anymore :(

Yes, well, we have Steamposium, and Brass Gear in Port Townsend and a couple more Steampunk themed events. I would love to get some folks down south to start misbehavin' in some steam punky ways. Thanks you for the compliments...(blush) and let me assure you that the culture will simply move out of Seattle and into the counties north and south. Bellinglham is coming along at the moment and much more affordable.

I love that the young woman of today , are inventing their own beauty not defined by popular culture. While viewing the pretty lace colors and ribbon, I had a sense of that these young women do not want to dress like the typical Kardashian or Brittany Spears half naked same old same old way of dressing. These young women want to reach out to another way of dressing, living and sharing an elegant way of life. Kudos for their inventiveness, sense of art and fun. Love it ladies. More power to you.

It makes me laugh when everyone says that people should wear what they want without being hated for it, but then the moment one person decides to dress in a way that is seen as slightly different, everyone suddenly turns round and bites them on the arse for it. I would take a JSK, blouse and fuck tonne of petticoats over a crop top and short shorts any day.

This is really well done. I have to say though, about how the girl said that brand is so important in Lolita... You can sew excellent Lolita dresses and even put together a Lolita outfit from off-brand clothing. I've seen so many beautiful things that girls have made themselves. Brand is lovely and all, but not important.

I'm a 12 year old OTT sweet lolita, which is totally crazy and frilly and pink,and I live in Ohio, which is the most conservative state in America, and I never get teased. You just have to carry yourself with confidence, and give anyone who disses you or makes fun of you the cutest, most doll-like glare in the world and say "love you too!" Try getting on Livejournal or attending cons to meet other lolitas, and just have fun! I know how it feels to be a beginner lolita, but just have fun!

Just ordered my first lolita outfit! Been wanting to do this for a long time. I'm just worried about how my family's going to react. They're pretty close-minded. We went to the mall where a group of 10+ furries were hanging out, just having a good time, and my family was making fun of them in private and trying to get me to subtly take pictures of the feat. I was intrigued by the furries, I will admit, but I wouldn't want to make fun of them or invade their privacy. :c Now my lolita dress is in its way and I don't know how I'm going to "come out" to them. I tried to carefully introduce the concept of lolita to my grandma just now, but she says it's "weird, not normal, and a desperate plea for attention by vain people who aren't mentally stable". I swear, the public eye will probably be more accepting of my new style than my family at first. I won't let that stop me, because I'm tired of letting the opinions of others steer how I act and dress. I WANT TO BE A PRETTY PRINCESS, DAMN IT.

Earandil: I have an idea of what boys can wear: they can wear victorian style/lolita men's clothes but with lots of ruffles and purples and blacks and stuff. Lolita is literally the most un-provocative so I just don't understand why people think it is. Somehow society has shifted and to be almost completely covered (in cute lace and ruffles if I may add ;3 ) is considered skanky and yet girls in tube tops and booty shorts with high heals and globs of make up is "normal" and acceptable...So sad. I don't get it but I won't let that stop be from making my transition into Lolita this coming year. ^_^

You really don't need to throw girls who wear revealing clothes under the bus because it defeats the point you're trying to make and they can wear whatever they want, just like you.
@averagetrailertrash
@averagetrailertrash 6 жыл бұрын
@Ubi: It's not throwing them under the bus to admit that revealing clothes are sexy. You generally wear them to feel said sexiness, and that's totally cool and fine. It's just strange when high-coverage styles are sexualized, considering they're usually worn for the purpose of modesty. Imagine if people came up to a group of nuns, took shady pics, and accused them of being religious fetishists -- it's nonsensical. Most people understand that there is a difference between porn, costumes, kinksters, and actual nuns, but those distinctions seem to be ignored when it comes to lolita fashion.

OneWingDown No, it does not mean a 12 year old prostitute, or anything sexual at all. It is both a nickname for girls with sweet faces and girls named "Dolores", and a play on the Japanese term "Loli", which means a young girl, or a Lolita.

Latiastuff I don't know why lolitas always try so hard to explain away the origin of the name, because you really can't. The word loli comes from lolicon which comes from lolita complex, which is named in reference to the Nabokov's Lolita and pertains to those who are sexually attracted to young girls. Hence, loli/lolita are both terms used to describe a sexually attractive young girl. Now modern lolita *fashion* of course has nothing to do with wanting to appear "sexy" and everything to do with ladies (and some gents) wanting to wear bows and frills and poofy dresses on their own merits because they like the aesthetic. However you cannot deny that A) thanks to the childlike elements and Japan's idea of "kawaii" vs more western "sexy" lolita fashion almost undoubtedly originally got its name from the novel and or/the term and B) the word lolita will always have connotations with sex and paedophilia for most people. Trying to say otherwise makes you look like a naive kid and doesn't help your argument any.

Omg I know right? It's not like they going around naked, if they were going around without any clothes on I could understand the abuse, even I'd shout abuse at people naked in the streets or out shopping, but they are wearing beautiful clothes, why would that invoke insults and nastiness? If I saw people dressed like this I'd just want to join them.

Hi my name is Harmony I am just starting Lolita. For a while now my parents were irritated that I would wear my cosplay in public and one of my friends Grace introduced me to Lolita fashion and basically explained to me it was a cute fashion that would get my parents off my back. So I bought a couple dresses from hot topic because at the time I didn't have very much money and my parents are more excepting of the fashion then my cosplay. Well at the beginning of my pregnancy I could still wear some cosplay until they eventually didn't fit and then my cosplay and anime stuff was either stolen or lost in the mail. It actually has been a few weeks since that happened and I am trying to keep strong and keep my self above water but I now won't be able to do what I want to do. I am having a little girl in May and what actually makes me sad is I won't be able to give her college unless I can get patterns and sewing stuff. Thank you for the inspiration and I hope your all doing well.

I'm glad that lolita fashion is gaining more recognition and support in the comment section, but I think some of the comments have missed an important point. I'm speaking of the comments that are implying that lolita fashion is comparatively acceptable to more mainstream fashion styles of women who wear more revealing clothing, such as "tube tops" and "booty shorts" and styles that are influenced by "Kardashian" or "Britney Spears". I feel ambivalent about this way of thinking. Some of these comments imply that it's acceptable to consider women who dress in a way that shows more skin "slutty" or "skanky", but that's reiterating the very same patriarchal, oppressive criticism that many lolitas encounter. There's no need to uplift one fashion style at the expense of another, even if that style is not to your taste. And there's no need to uplift one woman at the expense of another woman. Just because lolita fashion is often misconstrued and isn't mainstream in comparison to more revealing fashion styles, doesn't mean that women who wear less modest clothes are free from denigration by society. It seems that whether we wear modest or revealing clothing, people will always find fault in what we wear. People often mistakenly assume that women adorn clothes solely to attract the male gaze and don't consider that we are simply dressing for ourselves and like what we wear. So I implore you to do away with this kind of thinking, and instead of making value judgements based on personal taste, ask yourself if the clothes a person wears makes them happy and let them be happy.

It doesn't have to be, but it makes it so much more fun. Excitement about new releases, wearing matching coordinates or planning coordinates for events, shopping vicariously through their purchases, getting cheap second hand stuff from local lolitas.. But even outside of that context, some lolitas I've met have a lot more in common with me (art, photography, taste in films, music, other fashion styles) which makes for a more substantial friendship.

I was looking at Lolita fashion in a magazine once and showing my mother, saying how nice I thought it was. She said that if I liked it so much I should wear stuff like that too. When I told her that it would be weird since no one here dresses like that, she said that I could start a trend. I think all parents should have that mindset. People should wear whatever makes them happy. I don't wear lolita because I haven't the money, but I cosplay. These girls are great! I think they're very brave.

@NoxiousGum I'm glad you still wear it :) I shot it on a Panasonic P2 camera, can't remember the specific model. It's broadcast quality, however my dvd-rip wasn't great so it's not HD on here unfortunately..!

Oh yes, I have seen some really lovely classic lolita dresses but never knew of any brands. So thank you very much for referring me to one ^_^ One day I may buy something from there. I'll still make my own as well, for it's very fun to design and sew ^_^ I love to add trims.

This is a great documentary, I adore the graphics and I love your accents! I tend to not really care what strangers say to me, I've found that yelled insults are easy to brush off as I don't know them (and they obviously don't have the 'nads to come up and say it to my face) but what my mother thought mattered more to me than I originally anticipated. She got a lot better about it after she found out there was a community surrounding Lolita fashion, and that I wasn't the only one "being weird".

Lolita fashion to me is cute! I actually want to try it myself! I say people who call it "revealing" or stuff like that are just making a fussy noise over nothing. They need to wise up, come back to reality and open their palettes more. To me, whenever I look in a magazine and see girls wearing it, they all remind me of alice in wonderland and some other fairy tale characters. So for people who show such distaste to Lolita Fashion, I'll say this: Grow up, go back and look up the fashion's meaning, tone down the overreacting and fussing, and rethink your tastes. I might say that to those guys because I think they have no taste in fashion like Lolita fashion girls do.

You girls are so brave and I know how you guys feel. I'm a Ball joint doll owner and I also have people stare at my friends and I when we are out in public with our dolls. Whether it be at a doll meet or just hanging out at the park.

The main sub styles always have the same main elements, but there are different designs and colours for spring/summer, and fall/winter, just like regular fashion. Not that that stops people from wearing things in any weather/season, and you don't always have to buy new things but that's the fun part..

I would love to see a full half an hour or hour long documentary on lolita similar to some of the ones that are done on History Channel or Travel Channel about other things. Really flush out the different genres and sub-genres and go into more detail about all the prejudice we deal with daily (for whatever bizarre reasons).

Most designers outfits, depending on the style, accomodate up to 88, 94, 97, or 104cm bust, but there are places you can get custom sizing (the chinese shops that sell replicas or their own designs)

I remember when I wore lolita for the first time. I felt really out of place but it wasn't new. Everyone focused on my shoes when giving compliments for the most part. My math teacher stopped class to discus my outfit and I explained it to everyone. They still thought I was weird but my teacher was interested. A girl in another class that I'd never talked to in my life ran up to me almost yelling "WHERE YOU GET DAT HARAJU-KU GURL!?" I tried so hard not to laugh as I told her.

I am a force for positive vibes & a dapper "Californio" drawn to bevys of Lolitas in waiting. LOL! Please...Keep Calm & Loli on, and I'll tip my hat to you & your shining magic!
