A short film about James Turrell's masterwork in process, Roden Crater.
The film was commissioned by LACMA on the occasion of the exhibition "James Turrell: A Retrospective" on view at LACMA from May 26, 2013 through April 6, 2014.
About LACMA
Located on the Pacific Rim, LACMA is the largest art museum in the western United States, with a collection of nearly 140,000 objects that illuminate 6,000 years of artistic expression across the globe. Committed to showcasing a multitude of art histories, LACMA exhibits and interprets works of art from new and unexpected points of view that are informed by the region’s rich cultural heritage and diverse population. LACMA’s spirit of experimentation is reflected in its work with artists, technologists, and thought leaders as well as in its regional, national, and global partnerships to share collections and programs, create pioneering initiatives, and engage new audiences.

My favourite part was James Turrell saying "...My thought there is that it's important that you go alone, almost as though you are coming to a ruin, you discovered these things yourself... You go through it and these things are your discovery" This man is truly a celestial dreamer, for the sake of it. Amazing

This has blown me away with it's mathematical complexity and beauty, I've not seen anyone attempt this with this accuracy since the Egyptians, I have total respect for what he's created.

Fascinating! A friend just went to James Turrell's Green Mountain SkySpace in Colorado at dawn this morning for her 70-something birthday. It was an unparalleled experience, she said. Now, I understand a little more about James Turrell's work & hope to have the opportunity to visit a site. I'm in Vancouver, BC 🇨🇦

This place is such a gift to humanity. An infinitely deep well for creative inspiration. What a mark to make to the world, using the Earth itself to paint. Incredible.
