I dont think a psychologist or psychiatrist would only check for psychosis. Was probably a GP with limited psychiatric training. Knowledge of Tourettes is widespread among professionals in psychiatry.

Re: UK vs USA, this is a problem in both countries (and also in Europe and Canada and likely nigh on everywhere else) but at least in the UK they don’t charge you for the privilege of being gaslighted about your body, and your income isn’t a barrier for getting to see appropriate specialists.

If you do or say inappropriate things context always matters and if you hurt someone, then letting them know it was an involuntary action should negate it.

My honest to God hope for you is that your son will grow out of it. As someone who is 25, and has pretty severe Tourette's since I was a youngling, I have to shoot it to you straight. If you ever would take advice from a fellow on the internet who you don't know, I must tell you this. Show him so much love, and verbally assure him you sympathize with his pain. Because it really is permanent physical suffering. (For the ones who's disorder doesn't subside.)

Another popular content creator with Tourettes syndrome is H3H3 productions (hosts multiple podcasts a week on the H3 Podcast channel). His tics are mostly physical (eyebrows, hands, etc) but he has been extremely successful despite given the extra challenge in life. He's also mostly adult humored content, but another great example to show your son.

My friend was put in hospital because some girls perceived her as weird when she was in middle school. It's worth saying that our understandings of neuroscience in general are barely more than infantile in comparison to other medical science studies... It's not epilepsy or tourettes, but I only realized about a month ago that I can't recall ever sneezing once on a motorcycle, and I'm fairly allergic to much of the surrounding environment... from molds and pollen to animal dander and dust... BUT for whatever reason, I've sneezed my head off in cars... even while I was driving... BUT never that I can recall on a motorcycle... which would be considerably more hazardous than driving a car and sneezing in uncontrolled fits... Emotional states DO elicit physiological changes, too. They are measurable and real physical changes. That could be at least part of it... I mean, it's imperative that I keep my emotional state relatively stable on the bike, because getting angry stiffens you up, the same as fear will stiffen you up, and the same as cold chills will stiffen you up. You can't ride skillfully if you can't move fluidly... AND that's a recipe for disaster on a motorcycle covering a 100 feet every second... It's important to note that when you get tense, it really doesn't matter why. It may only interfere a negligible amount with your skills on the bike, but it ALWAYS interferes. You can't "cheat" either. These are physiological changes, and while some effect certain people more than others, they are still detrimental. Of course, to me, riding has always been more akin to meditation than an adrenaline fueled sport, so that probably has some to do with how I can maintain a relatively stable emotional state on a moving motorcycle. Sure, people do dumb things in traffic, and it can be irritating... I'm human as the next guy or gal. I just prefer to blow it off in a few choice words and cleverly coined insults under the helmet, and releasing the anger, I make the maneuvering adjustments to render any hazard to a "non-issue" or effectively evade the catastrophe... AND of course, gear is worn to mitigate those times when skills alone can't. In any case, I wouldn't give up hope. We may well make significant progress. The "cutting edge" is miles ahead of where it was when I was a kid... and pneumonia was a summertime infection as often as winter... which for me was twice every year until I was in the fifth grade... ;o)

He started with his mouth like yawning randomly then that stopped now this is the worse I've seen from him all this before he goes back to school where he didn't do anything before I'm telling him it's ok and he says that's he silly for doing it he randomly will just burst out with a back shrug and a mouth sound bit like Tasmanian devil. I think this helped to give him the security that he's got someone to listen if he needs it. Eventually he will learn to control the ticks. But this is something that will take a little time. My Tourettes has actually made me a bit more confident and social for this exact reason. I would still put my Tourettes in a dumpster and set it on fire if I had the chance, but small, teeny-tiny blessings I guess.

Many people with tourettes may tic less during doing something that requires concentration, but it's never controllable. Doing things that won't trigger a tic doesn't mean you can control it.

Some People have vocal tics some have motor tics, some have severe tics where it affects their day to day working, some have mild tics. Mine is mild and controllable when i try to. My tics come all the time, even when focused, but if i think about them and try to control them I can control them. It does not affect my day to day working. Except sometimes feeling bad when people unknowingly make fun of me. And also tics can change over time. When I was a kid i used to have vocal tics. I would make wierd noises in class and kids would laugh at me. Luckily they went away. Now I have motor tics and breathing tics.

Well, maybe she really needs to warn others. Not to take some sort of responsibility or excuse an inconvenience she has no power over, but because an explanation might actually be needed. Imagine she tells someone she'll kill their dad (which she does sometimes) without the context. She could get in actual trouble because people don't take stuff like that lightly. If they don't know her, that is. You can't expect random people to think about the possibility of this being Tourette's first. I really like Anita and follow her streams, but you cannot act like some comments don't need to be explained if they happen. That's why she tells the taxi driver in the first place, so she can prevent bad stuff from happening.

She's only had a true diagnosis for a few years, so it takes time to get past feeling like you have to justify yourself. She's adjusted quite well from what I see, a lingering habit isn't so bad. @@phydeux Not sure if you're reading this in the full context of the conversation, but you've kind of furthered my point. You KNOW to be on your guard around pets and toddlers. In this instance, if she didn't let me know up front, I wouldn't have known that there would be unwarned attacks. So not only am I not prepared for it, but what if I hit her back in self defense because I genuinely thought it was an attack? Verbal ticks like suddenly blurting out a random sound is one thing, but something physical needs to be managed on my part, which cannot be achieved without information. And if given the information up front, I would sensibly keep myself at least an arm's length away so that I can evade or react gently on time.

I'm not even generally interested in the type of content she makes (I don't like to watch streams and stuff like that) but I always click when one of her videos is recommended to me because her personality is honestly really captivating, and her voice is wonderful to listen to! She's very charismatic.

Right!? Its those difficulties that can make us better than other people at it some day, as we have to put more effort and research into cultivating these good skills, as well as coping with our conditions (mine's autism). It allows us to expand beyond the norm because people who dont have struggles often dont feel the need to change or imrpove their communication skills.

I have a similar story. Painfully shy and awkward and super introverted as a kid, finally in my 20s I said enough and started forcing myself to go out and talk to strangers (at events, not just like on the street), and then I started a podcast, and now I have a KZfaq channel and stream sometimes and people think I'm a huge extrovert. It's practice + pushing yourself to grow :)

@@BurnoutBop It gets tiresome having to introduce yourself like that. Introducing yourself as your ailment is a terrible feeling and you begin to indentify as your ailment. Fortunately for me, my ticks are not loud or obnoxious like hers, so I tend to hide it until someone notices. I have known some people for years and they don't even know I have tourette's because I hide them. Sometimes I will do a facial one that I can't hide and people will say "wtf was that?" And that's when I tell them. PS, it's NOT funny, and I AM a regular human being.

I wish so much I had parents like you. I have the opposite family. I can't begin to think about what I have to hear from my family about. It had me depressed for 2 years of my life. I was 11 or 12. It started to me when I was 8 too. I'm so proud of you, I don't know who you are but you are a absolutely great and wonderful parent. You don't know how lucky your son is and how much your support means to him and will help him through his journey until you see what a kid without that support goes through and how hard it is for them. You are truly a great parent. I hope you have a great life man.
