I know I'm late to the party here, but haematogen IS supposed to be semi-medicinal. It used to be made with blood (you can tell by the presence of the "haem" in the title), though more modern recipes replace it with supplements and vitamins as well as syrup etc. The purpose is to act as a supplement for various nutrients that can be obtained from blood. Rich in iron and vitamins etc. Love the stuff, especially the older ones. It isn't really a protein bar. If anything, I'd say the UK doesn't really have an analogue to it and the choice was not the best for a comparison.

Man, I'm from Ukraine and I tell you from experience you can go to 10 restaurants and try borshch and it'll be different. And when It comes from a jar you know your won't have the taste of freshly cooked ingredients and you know you;ll get the lamest possible recepie. To be honest, I think it's true about any food, so your comment seemed strange to me, but with borshch I know for sure there are traditions and secret family recepies involved and it's so hard to find a delicious borshch but it's worth it, because average borshch is nothing worth trying, but man, oh, man, when you try a borshch that's on 8\10 quality level or higher - it's awesome. It's just like with Snack Wars with Uncle Roger, when they gave him sushi from Tesco or fried rice from a microwave - obviously there is a drastic difference in taste.
