When I returned to church and being a fully practicing catholic 5 years ago, I was compelled to ask quite a few people to forgive my actions and words towards them in my past. It was very hard to do. I was astonished that all I asked forgiveness of said the same thing, "there is nothing to forgive" they knew better than I and I cried over their responses. It was truly an eye opening freeing thing.

AMEN. THE most constructive way to be able to forgive, especially when we are having great difficulty doing it, is by praying that God help and Bless the person who has hurt us, just as Our Lord taught us to do. This removes the hurt from us, and helps the wrongdoers also. It's a win/win.

Forgive them for your own peace of mind, to cleanse your own heart. Pray for they're repentance and that they'll make amends with the Father. From a human point of view it is very difficult to forgive people who hurt us especially if they never say " i m.sorry..."but Jesus tells us to forgive,so the first step towards forgiveness is to pray for our enemies day after day,in the end we will feel so light in the body too.

We MUST ALWAYS forgive to the point of martyrdom. I often reflect on how Our Blessed Mother felt at watching those men beat and nail her son to the cross. How any mother could endure that level of cruelty and hatred towards her child is unbearable to fathom. However God gave her the supernatural grace to endure this and like her son she could forgive those who did these evil things. When we are in Heaven we will see that to forgive was one of the most important thing we needed to learn while here on earth. Our Father forgives us the terrible crimes that we commit so we must also forgive others and ourselves.

♥️ “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32) Excellent homily!! ♥️ I loved reading “The Amazing Secret of Purgatory.” Finding out that the sins which most lead to Purgatory are those against charity, against the love of thy neighbour, hardness of heart, hostilities, slandering and calumny was very eye-opening. In her interview with Sister Emmanuel, Mystic Maria Simma said those who have a good heart toward everyone have the greatest chance of going straight to Heaven, as love, humility and abandonment to God are the three keys to going directly to Heaven. We must all be ready to forgive one another, just as the Lord has forgiven us. Thank you Father Mark for this very important reminder. This is so difficult- I reflect on forgiving those that hurt me everyday (truth). Yet I still find myself struggling with hurt and anger from what has been done. I do not seek revenge, to be honest, I’ve often times given my pain from others to God. I’ve witnessed that God truly does handle those that cause us pain appropriately. We truly reap what we sow. I know I’ve been handed harsh lessons that make me reflect on the hurt I’ve caused others. With that being said, I do forgive those that have caused me pain, but when I’ve attempted a renewed relationship with those people, I find myself being treated (mistreated) the same as before. Therefore with many, while I forgive them as I know and respect we are all human, I must accept that having close ties with some cause me harm which results in death of part of my spirit (self esteem). I pray for all whom have caused me pain, I ask that they be granted God’s wisdom, grace, and mercy and I leave it there.

Yes, I asked a Priest about this once and was told if the person does not cause you to sin, you must forgive them and not cut them out of your life. My questions was if someone hurts you, you find out they are " users" can't you just forgive them but not let them back into your life? I think it is a reasonable solution. The Bible says in the last days there will be people like that, it says to avoid those kind of people.

I've had this same delima. I have violent relatives and I choose to not associate with them because bruises, broken bones, etc. These same relatives tell others I'm crazy and what not. All I can remember is being 24 and thrown in a wall for no valid reason. It's not a grudge for me but rather risk avoidance. I think I've forgiven but if I contact them to even say that; I could find them on my door step literally barging in.

@@ambilaevus7607 Yes there are safe ways to forgive the unforgivable. We are expected to ask God to help us forgive others who hurt us. But we don't have to place ourselves in dangerous or unsafe situations to do that. We are instructed by Jesus to forgive "seventy times seven". Not to expose ourselves to danger and physical, mental and emotional abuse. We can pray for the conversion of their hearts and minds to God while keeping ourselves safe. I think God also expects us to be wise and judicious by protecting our own well being.

The best I figure is that maybe it was a soul that was released from Purgatory and on their way to Heaven and that was a thank you for my prayers. God Bless and remember to pray for these souls.

There is a quote that says if we refuse to forgive someone it’s like mixing up a toxic cocktail and then drinking it ourselves. If anyone has trouble forgiving someone it’s helpful to read the story of St. Maria Goretti in detail. She forgave her assailant before she died. We can imitate her great example and be free. It’s not good to allow a person to live in our head for a long time, thinking about old wounds. It can really affect one’s health, energy level and other relationships. When we forgive someone we do it for ourselves too. ~ Bob and Brenda

I totally agree Fr Mark, and I need help grace to forgive my monster of a father. I have great anger rage and hatred for him yet I do pray for him as though he’s still alive. (Jesus has told me he’s in HELL). I pray for him so as to be set free myself NOT for him. Even now many year’s later to say the word dad is utterly repugnant to me! Thank you for your kind prayer’s and those of other’s who will read this comment. God bless. Praise Jesus and Mary always!!!

I always learn something from your videos, Father Mark! I didn't know there are different levels of Purgatory. Thank you so much for your book recommendations! I just finished Imagine Heaven by John Burke and it gave me enlightenment about Heaven and what we have to look forward to there. God bless you, your parish and all who watch these daily videos. Let's pray for peace in Ukraine and all over the world. In Jesus' name, we pray. AMEN.

Forgiveness begins with a choice... An act of will. When I find it difficult to forgive someone, I pray, Lord please forgive that person on my behalf. I dont feel very forgiving right now, but I choose to forgive and someday my heart will match my words.

I want to forgive my friend, reconcile with her and be friends again but it seems she doesn’t want to talk with me or clear the misunderstandings we might have. Thank you for this, Fr. Mark! I needed this reminder, not just about forgiveness but also the title of the book you recommended. I know from experience that when I have truly forgiven someone who has hurt me, it’s not just liberating but I have also sensed a new glimmer of dignity that comes from the Lord, and it’s the Lord that truly heals us by our willingness to forgive. Pride destroys our dignity and inner joy, and all concerned suffer. When I view it from afar, I can recognise the evil one at work within me, and that’s a sobering reality! Gosh, if I’m honest, I still have quite a lot of work to do on the forgiveness front, and I will read the recommendation book.

When people die, sometimes they will visit as spirits to ask for forgiveness. I have had that happen and as you just see them from the corner of your eyes, you need to pray for them and ask the Lord to have them forgive you and that if they are seeking forgiveness, that you forgive them. Only then will they move on. Viva Cristo Rey!

I also heard some advice. Honestly it could be from Father Mark. Or Matthew Kelly, or Father Mike Schmitz, I can't recall. But what I learned was... There are times you forgive, you want to forgive with all your heart, but your mind keeps bringing you back to the situation. Its troubling because you want to for give, so why does it seem you can't let it go? There is no answer to that, but I do know what to do now.. Every time it comes into my thoughts I use it as an opportunity to Forgive 70 times 7.. or every time, again and again. It does make me feel better doing that. And who knows perhaps every time I forgive, perhaps it smacks the demon trying to cause discord in me. Also if you want to really learn about forgiveness, I suggest Reading and learning about Father Ubald of Rwanda. I learned lots from that Holy man. God Bless. Viva Cristo Rey p.s. one of these times I just might type Viva Cristo Rye.. my dyslexia keeps wanting me too. lol 😅 I suppose He is the bread of life. lol

If we have trouble forgiving from the hearr, we can ask that Jesus allow us to forgive with His. Just until we are able to do it ourselves. With, of course, the understanding that we will continue to try extending that forgiveness until we can.

Fr Goring: I believe it's possible to avoid people who have done us serious damage but still pray for them in charity and not do them harm in return. It's a way of insulating oneself from further damage. I have just such a situation in my life and have for many years cut off further contact with that person in mind. Your thoughts?

Targeted individuals are harassed every day several times a day and while sleeping. I've prayed for the people that cause this and the people that created this program. I've forgiven them but this is something i have to continually keep doing since the harassment has not stopped (been overtly harrassed since 2010) I forgive them but when they do it again makes me think of them again...then i repeat the same thing. God help me to forgive everyday.
