This is not intended as an educational dressing video, but is simply meant to showcase the garments I constructed specifically for the c. 1895 Lady Sherlock project. Shoes, stockings, collar, petticoat, and blouse are modern reproductions; the latter two are not close historical reproductions.
A more correct dressing sequence for an 1890s crime-solving lady would include:
Stockings (gartered below the knee or suspended from the corset)
Shoes
Combinations (alternatively a separate chemise and pair of drawers)
Corset
Bustle pad
Corset cover (omitted from Lady Sherlock for time)
Petticoat
Shirt-waist (with detachable starched collar)
Skirt
Waistcoat
Overcoat
Sundry such deerstalker hats, pocket watches, pipes, &c.

Fwip Sugar Yes, Haddon himself was referring to a Sherlock Holmes quote in The Adventure of Silver Blaze when he wrote the title of his book. His novel is about a young autistic man solving a dog’s murder, and is a meta commentary about how in the current age, most incarnations of Sherlock Holmes suppose him to be on the autism spectrum himself, on account of his unusual powers of observation and deduction. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventure_of_Silver_Blaze

When I was in London, as someone who is a diehard Holmes fan, I was rendered completely speechless when a live Holmes actor noticed the deerstalker I was wearing and proceeded to not only swap hats with me but also to adorn me with his inverness coat. @transylvanian there were also many women and trans men who manged to dress in male clothing and do men's jobs through out the Victorian period, such as Anne Lister and James Berry. Also considering that the Sherlock Holmes books take place in the late Victorian period and the very early Edwardian period and the fact that Sherlock hails from a very wealthy country family, it wouldn't at all be a stretch to have a period female Sherlock Holmes series. Sherlock Holmes would be far more likely to be put in an asylum for morbid behavior and autistic traits than for being a women with a job. Working women were very very common in the Victorian and Edwardian period.
@KTo288
@KTo288 4 жыл бұрын
For a female detective in the Victorian era you can look up the Sarah Lockhart stories, there are BBC dramatisations starring Billie Piper. Female detectives fighting against male prejudice, and often times utilising it in their favour, is a well known trope of detective fiction. If you think about it logically Miss Marple would have been a young woman in the Victorian era and may very well have been detecting even then.

@Lord Farquaad There's a lovely book series (the Elemental Masters by Mercedes Lackey) that has a pair of ladies that sometimes assist Sherlock Holmes - investigating cases with Watson that involve the supernatural. They regularly wear men's clothing as disguises, just like Sherlock does. So it's not really a stretch.

@Donutsandmusicaltheatre areamazing - As I understand it (correct me if I'm wrong), historical corset wearers usually put their shoes on before the corset, and therefore the rest of the outfit, to eliminate pulling on, tying, or buttoning shoes once corseted. It was a practical way to do things. [Also, it seems to me that putting on one's shoes at the start would allow the feet to be warmer and cleaner while walking about the room assembling and putting on the rest of the outfit, but that's my own theory.]

Back when "come at once" could have been days or weeks. Things have changed so much, and I barely know anything in comparison to Miss Banner!

If within London or other major cities, it would have been reasonable to send a runner to deliver a missive within an hour or two, so you might expect to hear back or receive your company within the day. Depending on the wealth of the household, it may not be uncommon to have your own carriage, though hiring a hackney would not have been out of the question if you were unable to summon your carriage or lacked the resources for such a luxury. It wouldn't have been delayed by quite the degree as you might expect, though it does depend a lot on how far away the other party was, as mail did still travel much slower between population centers at the time.

I’m so happy that you call tartans tartan not plaid. By the way black watch tartan historically can only be warn by certain clans. My mother was very happy to find her family, the Lindsay clan can wear it. She loved the woolen mills in Scotland when we went for the tartan kilts.

Bernadette, the clothing turned out beautifully as we all knew it would: so much care and attention to detail. But in addition, the concept, filming, and editing of this piece is astounding. It's hard to believe that you are basically shy and really didn't think you "had a voice". You and Dani have put so much of yourselves in this and it really shows. I think you are becoming a reluctant star. Kudos!
