Another great episode. Just to clarify Samung's tablet capability. In 2014 I bought a Samsung Tab S 10. 5 (TM-T800) which means it has a 10.5 inch screen, Wifi and a built-in GPS. It has no mobile phone SIM slot. After downloading Navionics, we've navigated the Grenadines, BVI, and Lake Ontario, far out of range of any cellphone service and the GPS worked with no difficulty. I keep Navionics on my Samsung phone as backup, which is sometimes more convenient. The charter boats we rented in the Caribbean were all equipped with high end Chart Plotters, which were complex and prone to breakdowns (like on our final approach into Anegada BVI's coral choked harbour). We switched these these off in favour of the Navionics. It's never let us down, as long as it's kept charged. Again, great job on the videos.

First I'd like to thank you for reviewing the technical requirements for tablet used for navigation. I didn't know that you didn't have to have a SIM card to have GPS capability. With regard to your comments about Chartplotters, my Raymarine Axiom +9 is a Chartplotter and so much more. It is an MFD or multi function device. It is the primary display for every device on my Raymarine network, including the autopilot, the AIS and depth gauge. It cost $1200 but I think it was worth it because it does so many things.

Navionics will let you update or even change your chartplotter chip's map set for $99/yr. I reference this episode often and have shared it to several social media groups.

We connect our tablets, even though they have GPS chips, to our Vesper AIS for GPS. It seems more reliable because the tablets seem to have occasional troubles keeping a tight fix. Also look into OpenCPN, which includes such things as routing software, Grib overlays, and very, very good Pilot Chart data… much more recent than any printed book, and it’s free. Nice videos.

Hi Tim, there is very old method to estimate the timing of tide. When the moon is at the horizon (both rises or sets), that's the lowest tide and it's going to rise. When the moon is at the highest above head, it's highest tide and start to decede. Also true the tide is at highest when the moon at the opposite of the earth. Roughly repeats 12 hours cycle. Then there is a king tides at new or full moon. And the last, moon rises about 50 minutes late every day.

That was great info, i really enjoyed the software demo - all stuff us land lubbers would have no idea about otherwise.... keep up the good work!

Thanks, good info! I started with Navionics last year. got a 10 inch Samsung S2 tablet that has GPS built in, not the cellular version, for about $200 new. I think the Navionics was only about $25 per year, but don't quote me. It will also show wind info if it has an internet connection. I use wifi hot-spot on my phone to let the tablet connect, works fine. I don't know if you can do this in the Bahamas..

Garmin is now linked with active captain. You can down load and transfer charts and there not that pricey. I use the ipod as a backup. I have found that if you do a little digging, you can find charts for free in a lot of areas. Great vedio! Very informative. Looks you two have recovered from the sinking like pros. Haha. Love your videos. Very informative. If viewers already have an I pad that’s not cellular they can purchase an external GPS receiver. I have a Sky Pro Dual gps. Like you said it will blue tooth to your iPad or phone. I also have simrad evo 3 chart plotter. The iPad is faster, easier to plan and make routes. When navigating I leave the Simrad alone and do everything on the I pad. Really only need the Simrad for radar and fish finder. Good for back up also. 2 is one, one is none. I turn the screen off on the iPad when not needed.

I'm a bit late to this party. Last year (2023) I sailed across the Pacific in a B&G equipped boat. We had on board 4 cells phones, a cellular iPad Mini with Navionics and of course the B&G. They all agreed all the time. I could compare my iPhone 12 with the B&G and they always agreed. I put Navionics on my iPhone during the sail, but it used up so much bandwidth that I had to shut it down, B&G and the iPad Mini had more priority. I also have a 6th generation iPad with WiFi only. At my house, at my desk, 4 feet from my WiFi router the iPhone is spot on, the iPad is okay, but drifts around and then settles on a spot within about 100' (28m). There can be a lot of rocks and shallow spots within 28 meters, especially in a 20 meter channel. Going to upgrade my iPad.

total matter of preference.... i use a android tablet cheaper easy to use. been using the same one for 2 years and that's not true android tablets come with gps chips just like ipad ...and remember to download maps before your trip if you don't have cell service .. if all you are using the tablet for is Navionics then i say go android with a good all weather case ... allot of people use ipads and that's fine but the expense is not necessary.

I’m an IPhone guy. As a landlubber I normally use Waze for upcoming hazard information and waypoints combined with IPhone maps for traffic info and Accuweather back and forth on road-trips. I’ve never studied sea navigation in detail although I’ve been on the water plenty. (As a scout and Army vet I do have plenty of land navigation and map and compass training). In twenty minutes you’ve given me everything I need to feel that I know how to proceed with my education so cheers for that from New Orleans!

That bluish line or course line is called Magenta, ma gent as in gentlemen ta. Magenta, Navionics is pretty reasonable price for what it has to offer. I use an aviation software when flying that cost $200.00 a years called Foreflight a lot cheaper than the old charts of yesteryear. 🤣🛫

I all ways ues my mobile phone and yep my faverite app is navionics. it is simple to use and userfreendly.Another app i like is boat becan it is more so used as AIS and it is used around the world and the naveys. Thanks for the demo on the nav. software. Seems same principle with land based. I used very old Samsung pad with gps chip pre downloaded maps went to French River in Ontario last year. Works perfect. One question, how and if that can be integrated to your autopilot

Great primer on Navionics , don't you wish the hard plotter guys made it so easy ! And cheap! What about currents associated with the tides? We always used a small booklet with the currents at a certain state of tide at a specific location. They are so hard to find . It would be nice to have on an Ipad! Does anybody use Kerosene for cooking? It was the go to fuel long ago available anywhere and used a lot on shore too.( primus stoves) more of a hassle to use though. I hear propane filling adaptors are a problem in non USA based locations! Cheers Warren

How do you tie in your autopilot and plotter to handle the route for you? Crucial if you are going at night.

How do you get live data on where your are? The GPS on iPads is called assisted GPS which is not the same as a Global Positioning System's like Garmin uses. Right?

Would all recent iPhones serve the same purpose, just with a smaller screen? Would they also connect to satellite GPS when there is no Wi-Fi or cell signal?
