Funny thing is that it wasn’t even Timberlake that pushed him down on the other end, it was actually Deron Feldhaus. Rewatch the game on here and you can clearly see it. I think he just assumed it was Timberlake because he was standing over Laettner when he got back up while Feldhaus was already headed up court.
@nedcassley5169 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for providing accurate information. The misdirected retaliation was less a chest stomp than a belly tap, which is good since it was administered to an innocent man (who jumped up smiling).
@patrickgray5633Ай бұрын
Yes I've told people that for years that Timberlake wasn't the one who pushed him down it was Feldhaus indeed.

The NCAA changed the technical foul rules as a result of this play so that techincal fouls counted towards personal fouls. Had this rule been in effect at the time, Laettner would have fouled out. Such a historic game.

I think he got a personal foul anyway because it was a contact technical.

Kintucky has a history of scandal that goes back to the 50s. The original death penalty. Multiple coaches in multiple decades. Their legacy is one of championships loaded with asterisks. 50s, 70s, 90s ain't it about time for another one?
@nedcassley5169 Жыл бұрын
Heartbreak is understandable but ultimately perspective should allow UK fans who watched the game should appreciate that they saw a Classic. Every time Laettner shot the ball it went through the hoop, except if he was followed. Those shots don't count and he made every free throw. It took perfection to beat Kentucky that day.

Oh geez, it's dumb, it deserved a technical, but you can see it's essentially a love tap. If Laettner actually put his weight on him he would have broken ribs. If Timberlake was in any pain he wasn't showing it -- to Timberlake's credit he didn't fake injury or he could probably have gotten Laettner thrown out. BB is a physical game and these guys are grinding on each other all the time. Laettner and Timberlake were pushing and pounding on each other the whole game and Timberlake was yapping constantly.

@tomboyer56089 жыл бұрын
It was wrong and he admits it was wrong but it was a good call to not throw him out of the game for it. If he had really stomped on the guy, tried to hurt him, sure, throw him out of the game, suspend him for a month or two, whatever. But you can see clearly it was nothing like that. Timberlake jumped up right away, not in pain, actually smiling.

I'm a huge Duke fan and although you are a "puke hater", lol, I appreciate when people don't wear the bias blinders. I'm constantly arguing with refs calls on both sides, be it for or against Duke. The worst thing in the world is an exaggerated, blatant excuse for one thing or another. Yes, he deserved to be T'ed up. No, it wasn't a "STOMP". More of a, "f you". Every team has had those moments. It's what makes it fun. Lol
@admiral215014 жыл бұрын
As a duke fan I will say he got a technical for this exactly what he deserved. Had he hit Timberlake harder he would have been considered in combative action but the kick is so light it was just a taunt. Look at how hard people can hit these days and don't even get a tech its ridiculous. I am a duke fan what laettner did was wrong he admits it but again it wasn't hard enough to be considered combative which is why he was not ejected.
@budbarker5712 жыл бұрын
When they showed the stomp close up, it was in slo-mo. That this didn't count against his personal fouls, meaning he would have fouled out, was a problem with the rules which has since been corrected. Holes in the rules: Someday refs will be able to use replays to see who fouled or if a foul occurred, not just who got fouled. If you have a DVR some calls can make you want to pull your hair out. "Good no-call. That was all ball." Not unless you think Kidd-Gilchrist's face is a basketball.

In OTHER news...Our Wildcats...THE best group of unselfish, dominating COMPLETELY as a Team that Division I NCAA Basketball has EVER seen are but a couple Weeks away from Our Ninth National Championship, making the IMpossible, POSSIBLE...Completing a Schedule of Forty wins to ZERO losses which was something only dreamed about, or jokingly brought up in both Media coverage as well as all of the talk spoken Out by the ENTIRE College Basketball Fan base! ...Back on Vidya topic, I HATE Laettner, BUT...I respect His accolades. His NBA I'm completely leaving Out, because IMO, He was never Someone who would play "lights out" in the Big Leagues among all of those Other NBA Players. On the flip side, He's among the best COLLEGE Players there has been in somewhat recent History. #UKVSPUKE ^_^

Other schools no not at all they cheat to win will do whatever it takes to win because that's all that matters to them.... Nowadays u can't play duke at home anymore without them winning because of referee favoritism.... I saw that game years ago. Laettner had been getting slammed under the basket by Timberlake with no calls from the officials. In the 1985 playoffs, Georgetown going for their second win in a row literally climbed on the Georgia Tech players backs nabbing rebounds without a single call. Officials get their pockets stuffed to "not see it" and I believe watching how hard Villanova had to play against the Hoyas AND the officials, that final game was supposed to go to Georgetown. . .

@Adrialgon lol no he shouldn't have because technically he never stepped on his chest...it was his stomach and they could really have argued the call from the ref. It wouldn't have stood anyway. Besides the foot placement was the same as if you stepped on a piece of glass, his foot came right back up. Also is he supposed to risk himself and injury trying not to put his foot down? . The guy shouldn't have been on floor where he was. He remained on the floor for a reason.. The whistle

@GreenDay1981 totally disagree. you also have to consider the level of competition,even in the ncaa tourney. indiana hasn't been a relevant force in college basketball since forever. the only reason they're brought up these days is because of an ancient perfect season under bob knight. michigan had a fluke recruiting year with the fab 5 but that was also nearly 20 years ago. duke/kentucky for a trip to the final four is far more of a classic, and the programs have been contenders perennially.
