Today...we prove Mike will buy anything if it says Lagavulin. A 7 year old CS lag. I don't even want to write more. 59.5% abv and refill and ex-bourbon hogsheads. One of 2,490 bottles. And proof once again that age is just a number....a number that matters?

So many people rave about the 8, it’s extra smokey and punchy and they love it. I don’t get it. The standard 16 is a beautiful, well rounded symphony and the 8 comes off as a farm goat that just wants to head butt for no reason 😆 eh to each their own

The 16 at 48% would be unbelievable. But this isn't a dream, and Diageo still exists.

@@llamabones It would be unbelievable but imagine what the price would be. It would probably double. Also, the 43% version sells in bars and restaurants all over the world. Diageo make make way more money from those sales than they ever would from whisky geeks like us. Putting the abv up to 48% would see their sales decrease.

I agree, the 16 is far better. However, it is just too thin to any experienced whisky nerd. Diageo know this but don't care because the Lagavulin 16 is a guaranteed money earner just as it is. I've seen it in some bars in Spain and it's the most extreme whisky they have. My issue with Lagavulin 16 is the abv and that's because I can plough through a bottle very quickly indeed. It's yummy and far too drinkable.

As a huge Lagavulin fan I will likely try to track this one down but it absolutely depends on the cost! Mind you I pay $200 with taxes for Lagavulin 16 and damn I love it!

I picked this up for about 140. Still under the 12 year for me in terms of cost.

Mike is right, that could very well be coloured. If I remember correctly, they colour the 8; you know, for consistency. I'm just hoping the distillery were allowed to do this au naturale without any Diageo interference. Seven years in a crap barrel won't do anything for colour. I've had a 24 year old whisky that looked like this. Anyway, even without smelling this whisky I can guess what it smells like and tastes like. It's a seven year, cask strength, Islay malt. That's a rabbit hole. Lemon, lime, mint and peat. That's what you get Youth and a bucket of peat is the future guys, unless you are actually happy about paying £120+ for cask strength 12 year whisky. What kind of world are we in? These whiskies can taste good but the price should express the quality. A bottle like this should not cost more than Laphroaig 10 CS. Seriously, why should it cost more? There are cask strength Islays like Ileach, Port Askaig, Smokehead, etc, that are a fraction of this price and you guys would never score them as high as this. They're just as good though. It's because it's Lagavulin. That is, unless you are beginning to like youthful, fiery, peaty stuff. I do like it. Good whisky ranges from this (as long as the price is right)

If they keep expanding production and opening new distilleries (not just in the UK, but globally)....I think we'll see the market correct in the next few years. Not sure what kind of data you get on what's aging over in the UK. But Kentucky publishes pretty good data due to tax laws. The volume of well aged bourbon has more than doubled the last few years and the pipeline is absolutely insane. Demand just can't keep up with all these new distilleries trying to cash in and the old boys doubling capacity.

Dustin knows I love my Lagavulin, the 8 year old, not a lot, It’s just okay and I only paid $35/$40 for that bottle. However, the 16 is my favorite go to for a great dram to relax with. The 7 yo doesn’t seem to be my jam after listening to you two talk about it.

I'd be a lot bigger a fan of that 8 year for 35 bucks. I don't think this is one that'll excite you. Though CS here certainly helps.

No sherry or age. The 16 and DE offers both. 16 is a very good age for this distillate.

I wasn't a fan of the Laga 8 either...way too young and just not ready seemed rushed and I get it peat lovers want younger whiskies becuase the peat shines through but compared to the 16 it aint worth it. This one seems different and cask strength.

As a fan of the distillery, it’s worth it to me. A very basic in raw version of legible, but I enjoyed it. One bottle only.

Hard to recommend given this is both youthful AND hardly inexpensive. Certainly a unique take on the distillate and distillery, but imo this is only for those with deep pockets who want to explore more of lagavulin. Not for those looking for a nice pour to have after work or on the weekend with any kind of reasonable budget.

I’ve given up on Lagavulin. It’s become a shameless celebrity brand. No variety, overpriced, fake color and filtered. Not worth it anymore.

Very limited core range. Plus, CF and color added, as you mentioned... In the past you could still rely the Jazz and Feis Ila offerings. But nothing epic since 2016.
