Our biggest question asked is what we did with our bulkheads? Have we had issues with them? We are constantly checking, re-checking and re-inforcing our boat.
Fact is this boat was built for the charter market. That means trade wind sailing conditions. Not extended gale or storm force conditions.
But we Love Lagoon catamarans. Their price point was within our range when we were purchasing a boat. They have fantastic layouts. You are also at anchor 80% of the time but safety and integrity of the boat must come first when you are offshore with your family for weeks on end.
We would love for Lagoon to beef up their construction considering what these boats are used for on the secondary market.
Hope you enjoy this episode. With Love,
Ben, Ash, Willa, Bodhi

I'm a composite boat builder and found this episode of great interest. I've built all kinds of boats, from racing yachts (Hugo Boss Vendee campaign) to RIB's, luxury powerboats, small fishing boats, military boats etc. Seeing substandard work on production boats like this, infuriates me. Many mass production boats I've seen, employ poorly skilled staff and often cut corners. I would be inclined to play this video to any teams who came under my supervision again in this type of production work; to underline ultimately, the responsibility they have for people's lives at sea!

The reality that nobody will admit or say outloud is that the charter market is what made catamarans economically viable, and they build them to last 5 years and 5 years only. These aren't the products of craftsman like boats may have been in the past. Those with limited resources then buy their boats out of charter and have to fix them and maintain them or re-inforce the areas where corners were cut. Including bulkheads. I think its a broken business model as building a boat to last 10 years in charter would probably cost only %20 more for %100 more time, but the people who fund the boats don't want to leave them in charter that long.

@Chris Lowndes I did a stint at Sunseeker many years ago. I once saw bulkheads being laminated, tape joins to the Hull, straight over the top of sawdust debris, pieces not even brushed to one side, let alone cleaning with acetone. Check out Oyster Yachts as an example; keel fell off at sea! Poor staff and poor oversight.

Hey guys 👋 nice shout out - thank you 😊 Regarding BULKHEADS - you guys nailed it. All production catamarans have suffered from these and similar issues as you mention and to highlight this for everyone who thinks it’s only Lagoons, just this past week I’ve been helping an owner out with cracked bulkheads that are severely cracked - not a Lagoon - totally different brand - not French build either … I have photos of these things but not keen to share it because people out there make a meal of trashing other peoples boats which after all is their dream. But yep - this is not just a Lagoon issue - it’s a catamaran issue for all the reasons you mentioned . The 450 was an exceptional issue for sure but the boat I’ve been looking at this past two weeks is also a later build than our older boats - not Lagoon . I think you guys nailed it by saying as sea going people we need to be aware of these things and everyone should regularly check through their boats. Cheers guys - happy sailing - great video 👋

When I was building my little F-9A tri (Carbon skin over duracore), I wanted to strengthen the epoxy/putty fillets before taping panels and bulkheads together. Once I mixed the resin, I added some scrap carbon fiber filaments (about 1/4-3/8" long) and mixed them well, then add the fillers/thickeners for the putty. The intention was that all the filaments going different directions would make the putty bullet proof. After shaping the putty fillets, I would immediately tape the joint together with bidirectional carbon cloth and top with peel ply. Doing it all in one shot made it all one solid piece. Of course you could use glass fibers but you'd have to make sure the filaments wet out fully and don't rob the resin from the putty. It would be best to practice this a little first to get the mixture and technique right. To test both putty's (w/ and w/o fibers) I smashed samples with a hammer against the concrete. The fiber infused putty was significantly stronger. It was a little harder to work with but I'm glad I did it that way. I just figured I'd mention that option for anybody re-filleting and re-taping their bulkheads.

I have been watching many sailing channels including Parlay Revival and what happened with them and how the whole Lagoon story expanded to the point, that most of the 450s have actual design flaw now, when it comes bulkheads. While you do not have the same ship, the clouds have been above every Lagoon ship and now seeing this video, I'm extremely happy for you - I was one those who where worried and now I'm smiling. You have taken really good care of her and you look even the smallest things, when there is many sailors who just ignore until issue is not avoidable. So huge respect and thank you for highlighting the need to keep eye on everything. It is very important.

Thank you, guys, for this video. I have been following the saga of the bulkhead issues of Parlay Revival and have been concerned with my favorite sailing channels that use cats. I am very glad to see you have been pro-active on this unique design flaw of the cats. Every cat owner would do themselves a big favor to inspect and repair any defect in their cat for their own safety and comfort. It is a design flaw perpetuated and accentuated by cat builders willing to take short cuts in production in order to rush a product to market. Optimum high-quality products are a result of high-quality design followed by high-quality construction materials and methods. Period!

Parlay Revivals last release was on setting up their rigging and it Was revealing to say the least ... Part of the failure problem may have come from the cats rigging being overtightened ... according to their expert .... The problem being tensioning stays to monohull type levels is enough on the Parlay generations of Cat to bend the bridge deck by over tensioning against the mast stays. 🤔 This on itself would load up those full width bulk heads .. They even showed how it first showed up in doors that wouldn't close due to distortion it could induce.

Hey Ben, You might want to take a look at how your new lithium batteries are wired. I highly recommend reconfiguring them with bus bars and equal length wires. Its hard to tell in the video but it looks like the way they are wired now 1 or 2 of the batteries do all the work. This is crucial for the life of the battery more so now as you will be demanding much more power from them for your new air conditioners.
@billhadden7219
@billhadden7219 2 жыл бұрын
I never thought of that. Very crucial for multi battery setup. The wires can also heat up if some are a different size. I've had a plastic liner melt because 1 wire became overheated in a 3 battery setup. Thankfully I was close to shore and safety. Good luck out there.

It's not just bulkheads or Lagoon. It's keeping an eye, nose, and open ear, on your boat for anything different. One telltale sign of the Lagoon 450 bulkhead issue is a creaky, noisy, boat. It was a strange noise that alerted Ben and Family about an issue that needed attention on their boat. Another thing that Colin of Parlay Revival tested was how flat the deck was, it wasn't, there was a 40mm drop in the middle. Troubles with doors not closing or gaps getting wider were another sign. Another good point brought up on Colin's channel was the importance of properly setting your rigging and gaining the knowledge of when and how to adjust it.

Well done video. This is all part of the evolution of boat design and construction. Videos like yours make a more informed consumer. Production builders will change as a result. The point about cost is a good one. Lagoon will certainly innovate to address bulkhead integrity while keeping costs down - future buyers will benefit as a result. Long time follower and have always enjoyed your video both pre & post kids. Am currently cruising Panama and was following a number of channels also in Panama and stumbled across this Lagoon 450 issue. As I really enjoy your channel, this prompted me to go back and look at your 2019 video. I’m glad you addressed the issue directly and it’s clear the issues you’ve dealt with are far less severe as the issues with the 450. I’m cruising in a 1998 monohull and would put the issues you’ve addressed throughout in the category of “Welcome to owning an older production boat”. That said at least in the case of my older production monohull, I firmly believe my older boat is better built than than the manufacturers newer boats. Thanks for sharing and safe travels. I'm watching another channel called Samson Boating, where Leo is building / restoring a 110 year old sailboat called 'Tally Ho'. I found it interesting how they built the bulkheads, layering and then gluing together 2 separate walls of tongue and groove wood in apposing cross direction pattern. I think they use 3/4 inch, so the end wall is 1.5". They cut two walls, with the alignment of the wood probably 30 degrees off center left and right, so one half of the wall is going up to the left and the other going up to the right. After dry fitting, they then glue laminate the walls together, and put in hundreds of screws kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLaAerqlrau1f2Q.html I also noted the Tally Ho is a mono hull, with no fly bridge to support above. It looks to me like Lagoon just slipped a piece of 3/4 inch wood sandwiched between to walls of thin fiberglass, where the fiberglass is more cosmetic to cover up the wood. And that's a bulkhead on a million dollar boat with a full deck and galley above it and then maybe a flybridge too in some models? I think the government needs to step in and regulate bulkhead construction. If you build a home, you have code rules to stop manufacturers from building substandard then hiding it behind drywall. Looks like boating construction needs the same oversight.

Thanks for the unvarnished, and unbiased truth about your boat. I impressed you didn't "go there" with bashing or praising. Nice job.
