People thought I was crazy for liking the Laguna segments more than the main portion of the story. Another thing was that it has always been between Laguna and Seifer as to who is my favorite character in Final Fantasy 8.

There are very active FF8 groups on Facebook that talk about the game all the time, and they are friendly groups too, which is pretty rare for FB where trolling is par for the course. Next to FF7, FF8 is probably the most popular game in the series, maybe it is a dark horse, but any game that gets talked about passionately over twenty years later has done something right. Keep up your analysis too, they help keep the game alive.

A lot of FF groups on Facebook are pretty friendly. The only horrible one I've seen is FF7 and that's because people are always fighting over Cloti vs Clerith. I had a Cloti person blow up on me because I said both ships are canon to a degree. 🤦‍♀️

FF8 has amazing music, characters, and atmosphere. I used to read the strategy guide in 6th grade n take it to school even tho the game was like 5 yrs old by then. FF9 is my most played one, but FF8 made me feel older and more mature.

What I also think is cool that if you go back to Winhill Raines Ghost will appear before Squall. She only appeared infront of him and Lagunga during the ending.

FF8 is my favorite Final Fantasy game. I loved the story when I was a kid.

Laguna being an actor because the team is broke and fighting a ruby dragon that he thought was a prop only to find out it was the real deal and ran was one of my favorite moments in gaming it also made me relax after the tension right before this sequence from the main storyline, moments like these made 8 such a fun game and lighthearted at times

I’m finally playing through most of the Final Fantasy games after loving them from afar for years and I just beat FF8 for the first time and watched this Laguna video and your Rinoa video. Both of them were fantastic! Really love your insights and thoughts on the characters and really gave me a lot more appreciation for an already cool game. You’ve given me some newfound respect and love for Final Fantasy 8, I hope you keep up the great work!

Laguna is such a gentle soul. The kind of person everybody wants around. And extremely handsome. So sad he hadnt his happy ending. He was who deserved the most

My all-time favorite character from anybseries in any game, gentle soul, extremely likeable yet still after all the heartbreak in his story, he remains extremely positive.....devotion for raine after her death is just wow. His innocence purity childlike but can kick ass.

@@XofHope I just think that the constant jokes of him saying something dumb and Kiros and Ward correcting him got old fast. Also there wasn’t much he could do about it but the abandoning two children thing im just really not a fan of. he’s still a really good character i just….ughh i can’t stand him when i play as him 😭😭😭

I think FF8 started out with a negative stigma because major game review critiques shared their personal views as objective. Now days, even 20+ years later, I see plenty of KZfaq an Twitch content creators sharing the positives of the game =) P.S I like the ending music!

I do recall gaming media being pretty ruthless in its baseless opinions in the day (still is in some places), but some of the magazines were quite hilarious with it. Regarding FFVIII, I always felt its proximity and inevitable comparison to FFVII was going to go against it (i've seen it referred to as the 'middle child' between FF7 and the nostalgia-piece FF9). Combined with the Junction system being integrated into the battle mechanics because it was such an important narrative device, and reducing the party to two key groups (Squall story, Laguna story), it was ultimately a pretty bold step away from where Square had previously been. But as you say, there's a lot of positivity around it now which I'm really enjoying to see.

@@AlleywayJack Yeah FF7 was going to be a difficult act to follow. I feel like had there not been any FF7 (I'm glad there is and it's my favorite game) FF8 would have not gotten anywhere near the negative press it received. Would have loved to seen a remake of FF8 with equal time split between Squall and Laguna and perhaps that time remaking idea in FF7R applied to FF8R in some fashion.

@@kylep4991 yeah it could be any game after 7 and it would still get stigma. I remember back in the late 2000's people hated Final Fantasy 12 but now like a deacde later the consensus likes it.

I am so happy I found your channel! I’ve been replaying a lot of my childhood favorite games on ps4 lately, and it’s so nice to have your analysis to accompany my play through experience. I’ve already finished FF 10 & the original 7, and I planned to tackle 8 next, then 9. I find your speaking voice very calming and engaging to listen to, and I very much like how your structure your videos. You deserve a ton more subscribers!

FF 8 was the first FF game my bro played (and we watched as he played) and I remember how amazed we were. I never liked Squall though. But Laguna is great and so is Edea as a villain, they're my favorite characters in the series.

Great episode! Laguna is my favourite FF character. Hopefully in the ff8 remake you will get more time to play as him, kiros and ward. I always wished they'd join your party once they boarded the ragnorok lol.

It would probably be better to comment this on the Squall video, but whatever: it there was something I did not like about how they handled Squall's character, was how they portrait introversion as a negative trait. I feel like they should have focused more on how Squall gets to live with the way he is more than changing his character. Squall's problem was not the fact he was introverted, but purpously impervious to other people. That was his mistake, cause it is quite a negative trait to have when you realise you need other people to function properly in any society. But liking to be alone or not having that many friends? What's so wrong with that. In other words, it's like if the writers forgot introvertive people don't LIKE being in big groups or excesive social life and instead they thought they can't.

Is this an appropriate forum to offer you feedback? I really enjoy the content and the insights, and generally have a very positive reaction to your videos. If I might suggest an improvement in your presentation, I would seek to avoid "you know" (e.g. 2:29) and "sort of" as filler A better example of how to deal with the filler is at 0:36, where you pause a second. I think that these would improve the quality of your otherwise well nuanced discourses.

Yeah feedback is not a problem. I'm conscious of fillers and try to catch them but sometimes they get through when I'm scanning my notes (I'm not a natural speaker). I think you're right that a pause might improve the elocution a bit

Laguna had a really depressing life. He fell in love with Julia and they both couldn't see each other again, And when he found another person he could love shortly after they married she died, And he couldn't watch his own son grow up. But he always smiled.

FF8 is my favorite ff game its the seond one ive played the first is ff7 im the curious type and that would be awesome if they would release lagunas part of the story as like dlc because yeah i agree with you that maybe flushing out his character would probably ruin it for alot of people but for me it would only add to the world and also seeing or experiencing his adventures would be great thats what i think anyways love your vids keep it up

i played that game when it came out and i don't remember reading any negative comments about it on any bbs or chat rooms from that time, i don't know why people think that this game were hated.

It's quite out of the topic but i wonder why they put fisherman's horizon theme in windhill. Somehow I feel the theme is more suitable for windhill; it sure brings back memories.

It's a fair point, Winhill exists almost exclusively for the nostalgia value in Squall's origins (sidequests aside) and Laguna's earlier adventures, so it is odd they'd put FH music in. It's interesting that Timber Maniacs 10 shows Laguna in Winhill and Timber Maniacs 11 shows him in Fisherman's Horizon though... I don't know if they're chronological or whether there was originally any cross-over between those scenarios in Laguna's adventure that would have got to development stages, I somehow doubt it, so maybe it's just coincidence and they threw in the FH music for lack of an alternative.

With all these remakes I hope they use the original script in a potential remake. I feel that the broader public leave FF8 with a negative viewpoint could be due to its story being cut along with character relations, especially with Squall. Of course most don’t like the battle system and I can see that getting tweaked too. But overall FF8 is amazing the way it is.

Sorry forgot to reply to this man. Ive watched some playthrough bits online but I haven't played it myself as I don't own a Switch. Weirdly a friend of mine has been pushing me to get one based on this game (along with Zelda and Hades) so I might pick one up soon

@@AlleywayJack Oh it’s ok, don’t worry! Yeah, I don’t blame your friend for suggesting it, it’s pretty amazing to be honest. Hopefully you can get a Switch soon haha, so you can try it out. Although I hear that a newer model might be coming very soon, so I’d probably wait for that tbh. Nonetheless, yeah, hopefully you’re able to play it someday. It’s a lot of fun, and the story really makes you think tbh.

Laguna was the one part of FF8 that I genuinely loved. Why wasn't this goofball chad the main character instead of The Blandy Bunch? I would have MUCH preferred that earlier half-and-half script, expanding the main party's story could make them actually interesting as well. I'd love to see a Laguna spinoff from 90s/2000s Square... but not from the modern weeaboo greedy scumbag version of the company

Idk how Kiros and Ward would be one of the most awesome parties in the franschise when Ward couldnt talk after losing voice after second dream lol. I mean if the Laguna sequences wouldve been 50% of the game.

Laguna, Kiros and Ward are great. I think part of the reason opinion has changed on FF8, and which you didn't mention, is the changing demographic profile of gamers. Back in the day gaming was a lot more dominated by 'laddish' young men. A lot of the criticism of FF8 from back then has not aged well at all. I guess you can see reflections of that change in how the FF7 Remake handles Wall Market v how the original did. Gaming has changed for the better. I agree with you that less is more, and in that respect I'm surprised you don't mention how the original FF7 handles Sephiroth v how the Remake does, which is the obvious example for me. Subtlety, restraint and mystique v oh it's that guy for the ninth time.

Changing demographics is a good point. Actually I was looking through some old PS1-era gaming magazines recently and it's amazing to see the style/tone of the journalism. Very laddish and sarcastic in a lot of places. It feels like the whole industry along with audiences has matured over the past 2 decades.

Ngl never liked him, hated playing as him, and im just really not too fond of people that abandon their kids 🤷🏻‍♀️ All the sequences, the only charm that comes out is that “Laguna says funny haha stupid thing and ward/kiros corrects him” and it just gets old and he gets annoying

And there you go not having a clue! He travelled half the world and defeated a dictator sorceress everyone was terrified of to save his adopted daughter, what do you think he'd do if he knew he had a son? He never knew! He was never told until adult Ellone found her way back to him (she had to be kept away because it was too dangerous given how she was a sorceress and could be used again by someone like Adel). Anyone who thinks like you is only showing how little attention they paid to the game and how much didn't get what was really going on.

@@XofHope dude calm down its all interpretation. It’s mostly about how I just can’t wrap my head about why he never bothered to go back to Winhill. He had time at the end of the game to when his country was BEING INVADED BY MILLIONS OF MONSTERS so like why was it so hard to just go with Ellone? Also he literally said he is only president because he wasn’t paying attention when they made him out to be a hero and he just kinda took it. Oh yeah, and the guy who’s the whole reason Ellone was kidnapped? Odine? The guy committing war crimes by experimenting on little girls? WHYS HE STILL WORKING FOR ESTHAR??? Laguna didnt even bother firing him? After he ran around the whole world because of the atrocities Odine committed why’s he still working for him? So this is my reasoning for why it’s still messed up, but with that being said, i completely see why he can be justified for it. Do i think its justified? No, but if you do good for you! Just because we disagree doesn’t mean i don’t know what im talking about and we can’t be friends I’ve literally played FFVIII a dozen times. I pay attention, trust me
