VIII has so much under the surface. One can completely miss the depth of this character if they are just casually playing through the game.

I always thought that Ellione was Ultimecia. She's stuck in her own time loop because of how obsessed she is with being as close to Squall as possible, and it's her own doing. She stalks him from the beginning of the game without him even knowing who she is. She invades his mind, and tries to make him see that Laguna is his father but fails due to Laguna being a complete clown. She even went to the point of drawing Griever out of Squall's mind and junctions to it just to be THAT close to him. Due to her becoming corrupt, it drew out the worst part of Squall's mind, and that leads him to fight and defeat a huge part of himself. Ellione doesn't want Squall to forget her no matter what and she even goes to the extent of constantly putting him through pain, trying to make him constantly remember her. Ultimecia also tells Squall in a cryptic way to also live for her, which is Ellione finally dying and not wanting Squall to live in peace. You can also make the argument that Ellione became Ultimecia so that Squall could finally defeat Griever, which is Squall's darkest side due to him being a gunblade edgelord, and be at peace with himself after losing his mother and being abandoned by Laguna; of whom 100% failed him as a father after Raine died, but I personally don't think that's the case. Ellione ultimately knew Squall's pain due to her losing her parents, not once, but twice, and ultimately went to the utmost extent to not lose Squall by wanting to compress time so that she could be his 'Big Sis' forever and keep him as a thing. She even wants Squall to kill Rinoa by having Adel junction Rinoa to her because she's jealous of how close Squall is becoming to Rinoa. I would even bet that Ellione went to the extent of killing Raine through time compression, and making Laguna abandon Squall in an attempt to become even closer to Squall, and after that failed, she went to playing literal mind games with him, thinking that it would work due to how corrupt she was quickly becoming. Ellione blends into the background of the game, which is why she's the perfect psychopathic character to make her the main villain of Final Fantasy VIII.

Final Fantasy 8 is my favorite game of all time. The characters were all so identifiable, and they were much deeper than FF7. Squall being a cold introvert reminded me of me when I was a kid, and I had a group of friends who forced me out of my shell like he did.

i was a very sad child but when i had the opportunity to play ff8 one could say(but i dont listen to any of that noise =) ) that i became obsessed with the idea of your actions echoing out so far across time as Lagunas did. it really helped me become an optimist and look for things i could do that would ehco in some sort of way.

See, I thought ellone was half summon like terra in ff6 but ff8 has a monster theme to their summons.

I really liked that bit about the heroes being related to their villains to tie "the plot" (someone wants to hurt the world) to "the story" (whatever issues the hero faces that the project really wants to talk about) together. Very clever story structure and has vibes of that samurai philosophy that "the way you fight is the way you think." Thank you for pointing that out, because I never would have noticed it myself.

I thought possibly Elone was Julia's and Laguna's child. Figured that night they met, she became pregnant with his baby. Julia had to give her up for adoption before or after she met Rinoa's father. In a way, she could be Squalls and Rinoa's half sis. She was able to enter Rinoa's mind in space, which could be used to explain why Laguna had such a strong connection to her without even knowing it. She resembles Julia, and this could be used in a remake... fingers crossed.

Rinoa has to be Ultimecia, despite Kitase flat out lying lol. One more hint you wont find anywhere I find interesting Ultimecia's name is based on Queen Artemisia who historically mourned her husband whos symbol was a lion. Shouldn't have to tell you about Griever at this point..the lion GF which retains the name only told to Rinoa when summoned by Ultimecia. And oh. Rinoas' name means Queen. Go figure. Edea- Means prosperous in war. Ellone- Means "God loves me." Dunno what Ellones could be trying to say, I get the others.
