February 2022. In what turns out to be a long old day, Neil heads out of Coniston, in the south west of the English Lake District to climb Coniston Old Man (or, if you're the Ordnance Survey, The Old Man of Consiton), via the Walna Scar Road and up to Dow Crag. He then heads north to Brim Fell and Brim Fell , before paying a quick trip to Great Carrs. On the way, he visits the memorial marking the site where a Halifax bomber LL503 crashed in 1944 killing all eight on board. The descent is via Swirl How, Prison Band in the snow, and back past Levers Water.
On the way, there's a rainbow, snow, cloud, a historic plane crash, and the thorny question of mountain supremacy.
This is a long walk, taking almost 10 hours, but there are many possible (shorter) variations of the route up Coniston Old Man. The simpler round is via the quarry route, to the east of the hill, and then back either via Goat's Hawse or Dow Crag (or, of course, the other way round). A lot of time and height can also be saved by parking at the Walna Scar car park (OS Grid Ref: SD 28914 97050).
The 2018 surveys of Swirl How and Conison Old Man were carried out by John Barnard, Jim Bloomer and Graham Jackson, and a copy of their detailed report can be found here: www.hill-bagging.co.uk/surveys/Surveys%20of%20Swirl%20How%20and%20Coniston%20Old%20Man.pdf
The men who died on 22 October 1944 were Pilot John Johnston, Navigator Francis Bell, Bomb Aimer Robert Whitley, Flight Engineer Sgt Harvey Pyche, Wireless Operator / Air Gunner Sgt Calvin Whittingstall, Air Gunner Sgt Donald Titt, and Air Gunner Sgt George Riddoch, of the Royal Canadian Air Force, as well as Flight Engineer Sgt William Ferguson, from Caldercruix, North Lanarkshire. More detail about the crash on Great Carrs can be found here: www.yorkshire-aircraft.co.uk/aircraft/lakes/ll505.html

Hi LDF and to Neil as well…I hope? Have just discovered these videos and have enjoyed watching a couple to date, but I will certainly start to watch and learn from the catalog of videos you have produced. They are enjoyable, informative and humerus!…..thanks to Neil, and I kind of feel a lot safer using your vids to walk these routes, and to notice a lot more around me at the time of following them. My best wishes to you all and take care. Regards, Chip 👍🍻 Ps Neil, nice touch with the bloopers as well 🤣😂🤣

Had a giggle when you said “...and pie!” as I was already thinking of a dusting of icing sugar on something sweet... something to do with Swirl How looking so beautiful wrapped in a fine powder of snow.

Great video guys. One of my favourite of all time and I have done it about 30 times as it's the closest of the big 'uns to me. Not filmed up there yet though. That's a long route to take too, completely destroyed the kids when we did that 😁

Thank you! When you get up to the level of Coniston Old Man and Swirl How, there's so many places to go and play, it's tempting to keep going. Luckily we made it back with a (little) daylight.

Alright mate. Excellent video of your walk. Well documented 👍Never hiked this route.. are the paths easy to follow? Thanks for sharing.
@LakeDistrictFilms
@LakeDistrictFilms Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Gary. 95% of the paths are clear - the only areas that can be a little vague, especially without snow, is the descent down Prison Band, but even then it should be possible to follow the rock shine to find the route down. Just take it carefully, as ever! Hope this is useful - let us know how you get on.

Great video. Any reason you didn't add Wetherlam to make it 6 Wainwrights and begin your descent from there?
@LakeDistrictFilms
@LakeDistrictFilms 5 ай бұрын
Thank you! Skipped Wetherlam this time just because, being winter, of the limited number of daylight hours, and the reasonably long walk off. We've done Wetherlam since, via Coppermines Valley and Black Sails, which you can see here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdaDftKLx6yVhnk.html

Great video as always, whats the easiest way up to the Old Man ? Going to be doing this in April, to be fair that way you went looked very good.
@LakeDistrictFilms
@LakeDistrictFilms 7 ай бұрын
Thank you. This might be one of the best ways up - there's the route up through the mine workings, via Coppermines Valley, but it's steep and you don't necessarily get the views. This way up is long, but there's the car park en route, and it's never too hard going. Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Found your Coniston Old Man vlog on purpose to see what route you took as we are doing it tomorrow (Christmas Eve) from the Walna Scar car park. Your fitness is way superior to ours (plantar Faciitis as restricted our walks for the past few months). Beautiful autumn colours and glad you showed us the plane wreck on Great Carrs, that’s on our list too now. Your reference of ‘pie’ is that your hard earned treat at the end of your walk?
