Lake Isabelle - Indian Peaks Wilderness

Hiking to Lake Isabelle is like going to visit an old friend. Always welcoming. Our outing began at Brainard Lake, up thru the forest to Long Lake and then a relaxing climb to Lake Isabelle. The winds were coming off the Continental Divide hard, but we endured and eventually found ourselves relaxing in a small meadow above the lake with a nice wind block. Another great outing in Colorado!

Was there back in June, 2018- the first day they reopened the road. Thanks for sharing this video. Brings back good memories. It sure is an awesome hike... right up there with the Maroon Bells.

Beautiful. The video starts at Long Lake heading towards Lake Isabelle. What trailhead did you start at? We are heading out there this summer and would appreciate any suggestions for a 3 night backpacking trip. Thanks!

Hi, Timothy. The trailhead is located within the Brainard Lake Recreation Area (fee). Brainard Lake is beautiful and very popular with anglers, families and the shared Pawnee Campground. Just past are two trailhead parking areas, the first of which is for Long Lake, Lake Isabelle and points beyond. The other is for Lake Mitchell, Blue Lake and points beyond. While there is no summer back country camping in this area of the Indian Peaks Wilderness, you can follow the trails further to Pawnee Pass and down into Pawnee Lake, Lone Eagle Peak, Mirror Lake and the Cascade Creek Drainage (permits required - Boulder or Sulphur Ranger District). Pawnee Pass is 12,500' with a very steep set of switchbacks down to Pawnee Lake. Alternatively, you can access the Cascade Creek area via Buchanan Pass trail and campground just a few miles north of Brainard Lake (no fees). You can also enter the area thru Monarch Lake on the west side of the Continental Divide and Granby. Again, permits are required ($5) to overnight in this area of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Car camping at Pawnee Campground is also an option, coupled with several day hikes within the Indian Peaks and some fantastic destinations. Mt Audubon (13,000'), Lake Isabelle and Glacier. Niwot Ridge, Blue Lake, Pawnee Pass and Peak. Hope this helps - MAD

You do realize that flying a drone inside a federally protected wilderness area is against the law, right? Drones flying in such special places are intrusive and annoying to other hikers. Drones also disturb wildlife. Leave your drones at home!

Couldn't agree more. We don't use drones or own one. Using a good camera with a gimbal sure does make for a cool video, though! This video was shot with a Canon 70d mounted on an Evo gimbal.
