Welcome back to timeBomb! In this episode, we dive into the latest updates on Lake Mead's water levels, the surging water levels at Lake Powell, and the overall performance of the Colorado River System. We also cover the recent fire that damaged part of the Las Vegas Boat Harbor Marina and the reappearance of the famous Lake Mead Monolith.
In This Video:
- Lake Mead Water Level Update: The current water level at Lake Mead Reservoir is 1,064 feet 7 inches, marking a 4.5-foot decrease since our last update. We discuss the ongoing decline and its implications.
- Lake Powell Surge: While Lake Mead's levels drop, Lake Powell is experiencing a significant rise in water levels. We explore the reasons behind this contrasting situation.
- Lake Mead Monolith: The infamous "Lake Mead Monolith," also known as the "vertical speed boat," has resurfaced as water levels decline. Discover the history and current state of this intriguing landmark.
- Colorado River System Performance: A detailed look at the storage capacities and inflows/outflows of major reservoirs along the Colorado River, highlighting the overall health of the system.
- Marina Fire Incident: An update on the fire at Las Vegas Boat Harbor Marina, which damaged 36 boats and two docks.

"Why is Lake Powell doing so well, while the water levels at Lake Mead continue to decline?" Exactly. You keep the water upstream for as long as possible.

And there are issues at the Glen Powell Dam limiting outflows but ok.

Would make more sense if Lake Powell didn't lose water through the sandstone. Just letting the water flow downstream to Mead would save water.

They haven't been doing that the last two years. It seems that water levels are contingent on both dams.

It just saddens me to think that; during that whole time that the water levels were so depleted that NOBODY bothered to try and clean up the wreckage's littering the exposed bottom (unless there was a body in a barrel...).

So sad! We Houseboated with our family in the 80s when there was plenty of water. We also Houseboated on Powell and Mohave, and vacationed up and down the river and Lake Havasu.

Climate scientists identified the lethal amounts of CO2 being released into our atmosphere in the mid-70's... and nobody did anything about it.. excepting maybe the oil companies who knew about it and hid what was happening from their customers and investors. What's happening now with the weather in the US and globally was accurately predicted by those scientists back then.

Seems simple to me, let less water out than what flows in and deduct evaporation loss. The basic problem is over utilization of the resource. Typical government strategy which is also evident in per the national debt.

I am curious if it's possible to put information from the recent years in context compared to historical data. I know there is historical data being mentioned here and there - sometimes farther into history, sometimes closer - but maybe putting it all in one video would give us a better perspective? Greetings from Poland.

The lake Meade outflow was twice the water added by the lake Powell outflow. Assuming lake Powell did not have troubles of its own, could it send along water equaling the Lake Meade outflows. Where besides lake Powell is lake Meade replenished? And on a monthly basis, can lake Meade be expected to discharge a million acre-feet each month? Does the entire Colorado river system produce 1 million acre-feet per month every month?

Why is the total storage in Colorado River system 1,000,000 acre feet lower than last year?
@gali01992
@gali01992 7 күн бұрын
One of the largest reasons for declining storage is silt washing down from the mountains filling the reservoirs.

Tell me they are not throttling the water going through the dam for power. They are going to get as much power as they can by using as much water as they can

"Capacity" is supposed to refer to POTENTIAL, not ACTUAL. Saying "Current capacity" doesn't make any sense. A thing has the same capacity no matter how much (or little) it has in it.

The only view that makes sense is the system view and please stop using the word “capacity” unless you are talking about capacity rather than water level.
