Welcome back Colorado River Watchers! Today we’ll look at how all the spring melt is making its way into our major reservoirs. We'll get to see some a beautiful Northern Lights capture from down here in Nevada, and we'll uncover some failures upstream that will lead to Lake Mead's water levels dropping over the next few years.
We'd like to thank you Colorado River Watchers for the continued comments, ideas, and corrections. We are independent creators and are completely viewer supported and motivated!

Thank you for this vieo. Glen Canyon Dam being secondary, was probably considered ancillary and neglected in planning and design with consequences that have to be dealt with now.

Thanks for the update on the water levels. It makes sense that they need to keep more of the spring snow melt in Lake Powell until its level is well above the penstock intakes, especially with the Pacific Ocean moving towards La Niña now and greater chance of less precipitation next winter. They should think ahead to next year.

Thank you. Since '83, I have spent most of my time on the lake at Sandy Point. 3 times, I almost made it to Separation Point about 55 miles up the Grand Canyon. We also camped at Scorpion Island . Our favorite place was God's Pocket west of Pierce Ferry. We also found the best water for skiing was from Pierce Ferry to Driftwood Island. We also would go up the Grand Wash. We know Ranger Don out of Meadview. Thanks for your content. I think you are great

Thanks for the update. I've watched the weather radar almost daily - and precipitation was falling in the upper Colorado drainage basin almost daily thru the third week of May. I've never seen anything like that in the last few years that I have been paying attention. Ultimately precip in the basin is what fills up the reservoirs, so over time, I expect the lakes to continue to fill up - especially if we have another decent winter of precip. Essentially the Western third of the US is a West Coast climate, that means below 50 degrees latitude, rain becomes sparse during the summers. Winter precip is all they get. This year precip lasted into the 3rd week of May.

I just started paying attention around the worst of the drought in 2022... so I don't have much to reference it to, but I do have a lot of viewers tell me the same thing you did. Last year and this year have been some pretty remarkable water years! The only bad thing I notice is people in the southwest already forgot about 2022 and are seeing this increased rain and snowpack as "the new normal". Thank you for watching!

Your channel just keeps getting better and better. And you know how much I love your reporting. The hidden details that won't be hidden one day will be reflected on by everyone, knowing you were far ahead of the curve in your understanding about the future water for those of us relying on the Lake Mead water. It would be so like the government to wait until it really breaks to work out the money and the solution. In the mean time we will shower in our bottled water. 💧💧💧

Thank you Martina! That's all I hope for each video... improve a little, build a little more knowledge👍 I like how fast our viewers correct things now when I slip up on info or data. The Colorado River "hive mind" is starting to fire up! I'm seeing that news outlets can't sneak past the old platitudes and false narratives behind the water issues now. All the real problems are coming to the light. Hopefully this channel won't prove the old "hindsight is 50/50" saying, but rather "LOOK! We saw this happen already and we're not making this mistake again!" Thank you for being a part of that🤠

@@mojo.adventures Yes, I actually do feel I am an important part of this here in Baja. Here as well as stateside, there are a few in the back rooms we are not hearing from and development is on hyper-drive. In 2005 when I just started writing for the Gringo Gazette, I did my first research into where Baja water come from. WOW. Was I surprised. And the dire warning about the Colorado River was already and issue with a prophesy that we almost experience 2 years ago. Two wonderful winters of rain. So nice. But as you know, it put most people back to sleep. This is why what you are doing to keep people informed and be willing to take the potshots from readers is brave. LOL. And I'm pretty sure that we would both like very much to be wrong.

@@bodhimartina6985 Would definitely like to be wrong... or at least flooded out for another consecutive 5 years so we can kick the can down the road a bit more!🤣 I keep thinking some grand solution is going to be announced any day now before we get right up to 2026, but we know how this works by now. I was just watching another video titled "Texas Drought Update - Mexico Border Conflict Explained" I thought you might find interesting (VIDEO: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nplogtCmnbS2koU.html) I had no idea Mexico had required deliveries to send back to the US via the Rio Grande. The author is framing it like a water war is developing because US & MX both aren't fulfilling their delivery requirements. A bit of a "2 can play this game" situation, but there aren't going to be any winners here...
@bodhimartina6985
@bodhimartina6985 2 ай бұрын
@@mojo.adventures Fairly biased against those "bad" Mexicans, so what else is new? I knew nothing of the Texas region, nor the agreement of Mexico to deliver water to the US, until you sent me this link. Interesting, the announcer did not mention that the US literally used up the Colorado River so severely it no longer fed the 75 miles into the Gulf of California. The US took 75 miles of water to Baja. Nor did he mention that California still grows crops that are water intensive like almond trees and alfalfa, ect. Also Time Bomb failed to share about Baja California's compliance to reduce their allotment of water to help during the severe drought in the 7 basin states. By Baja's 1944 treaty they were not obligated to do that. Baja was one of the first to show up to this table, before any of the Basin states. Overlooking the real issue here and blaming Mexico is a sad scapegoat. Mexico is fighting for the life of their people.Calfornia is still filling their swimming pools. And on both sides of the border the politicians are fiddling to their own tune. Blaming does not help the real facts of overpopulation in arid regions, and wantan development that brings people to desert areas to live and farm. Which is the exact issue that is still happening with allotments along the Colorado River. Two wet winters is nothing in the face of the real issue as you have been pointing out for some time. I'm a little confused as to why the US thinks it has any right to the water from the Mexican mountains that flows into their reservoirs, while Texas water management failed to respond 10 years ago, 20 years ago, to reality. They chose to overlook - too many people and not enough water. I suggest this is a deeper political issue which Time Bomb chose not to address. Two countries, two rivers and no common sense. A political mess. The gentleman speaking for Time Bomb actually has a map of Baja California cut off from Mexico. Really? And his arrow pointed the wrong way. Colorado River allotment flows west to Mexicali and on into TJ. Not east into the desert. The 1944 treaty covers both river and regional issues. I can't even imagine what a power struggle this is going to be. Anyway, my take is that one day in the future, people will have to begin to migrate to areas where water is plentiful. Major John Wesley Powell, an American explorer and scientist, warned that there wasn't enough water to support large-scale farming or rapid settlement in the arid regions of the United States. In his 1879 Report on the Lands of the Arid Region of the United States (you can read his report). October 2025 and the 1944 treaty ending in 2026 are two dates to watch. So I'm thinking the water wars will begin sometime towards the end of 2024. Who holds the water, holds the power. Oh, my I did go on. But you can tell it is my "soap box" and when I'm asked there is a flood. 😊

@@bodhimartina6985 this is an excellent analysis, thank you for sharing all this. I didn't even notice the discrepancies you pointed out in the Time Bomb video because I am so unfamiliar with the topic. Yes the development in arid areas seems to be a sore spot in both US and MX. Then when we raise a fuss like here in Las Vegas, the city leaders will say we can't stop construction because that IS the economy here and that residential isn't using most of the water. While that is true, irrigation users and senior rights holders will just in turn blame the growing cities encroaching on their land while they continue to hold and use the rights or sell them off how they please. There is NO adult in the room to uncover and solve the real issues. It's always... band-aid here, this will get us by there, blame these people, pay those other people, we're taking the water that WE are entitled to, but we're not giving YOU water you're entitled to because there is not enough. Left hand has no clue what the right hand is doing and I'm pretty sure if the USBR doesn't just draw a line in the sand for better or for worse there are going to be interstate conflicts breaking out like back in the 1930's...

I wish people would watch your videos and understand the water situation in our lovely city. The federal government controls the lake levels. The main issues are the amount of water going to California and the damage to the infrastructure. Not the amount of water. I’ll be sharing this frequently so hopefully people will be educated and the narrative changed.
