Find out more about Lakeland's Emergency Medical Technology program at lakelandcc.edu/request and lakelandcc.edu/EMT
Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians, or EMTs for short, are trained to rush into action and handle a wide range of life-threatening injuries. Their main function is to respond to emergency calls and stabilize patients until they can be transported to a hospital or trauma center.
An EMT is the entry-level stage for the profession. EMTs can assess a patient's condition and manage respiratory, cardiac, and trauma emergencies. Paramedics train at an advanced level and work under the direction of a physician. They acquire advanced life-saving skills, performing advanced diagnostic testing and using other complex equipment.
Lakeland offers two certificate programs in Emergency Medical Technology. The first is the Emergency Medical Technology - Basic certificate. It's an eight-credit program that can be completed in a single semester. After completing the certificate you'll be eligible to take the National Registry Exam to become certified in the State of Ohio as an emergency medical technician.
Our advanced certificate program is Emergency Medical Technology - Paramedic. It's a 28-credit hour program which is designed to be taken after completing the EMT certificate and is completed in one year. Many of our students in this program are already working as EMTs as they begin this program. As with the EMT certificate, when completing the Paramedic certificate, you'll be eligible to take National Registry to become certified in the State of Ohio as a Paramedic.
Both certificates have you participate in clinical education where you get your first chance to work in the field with local fire departments and in hospitals.
Completing a certificate in Emergency Medical Technology is a great way to begin a career in the medical field. You can start directly after graduating high school as an 18-year-old. While many of our students enjoy careers as EMTs and Paramedics, we also have students who continue on to be nurses or physicians. Emergency Medical Technology is the fastest way to be able to work, providing care to patients.
Lakeland's Emergency Medical Technology program is well regarded in the community and our graduates are found all around northeast Ohio. In fact, after passing the National Registry Exam, our EMT and Paramedic graduates have a 100% placement rate.
