Medical assistants are multi-skilled health professionals who work performing clinical and administrative duties. They work directly with patients in a physician’s office or urgent care facility. Their clinical duties often include taking vital signs, preparing patients for their exams, drawing blood and basic diagnostic testing. The administrative responsibilities of a medical assistant may include telephone triage, updating patient medical records, and scheduling appointments.
Medical assistants directly influence the public’s health and well-being. It’s a great option for students looking for a fast way to a career in the health care field and want to directly with patients. Most medical assistants work Monday through Friday schedules, with nights, weekends, and holidays off.
Lakeland’s medical assisting students receive the knowledge and skills to perform the clinical and administrative duties in a physician’s office. As a result, our graduates excel in this high-demand field.
Lakeland offers a three-semester program in Medical Assisting which can be completed in less than a year. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the national certification exam to become a Certified Medical Assistant, and then begin working in the field.
As part of the certificate, you’ll take a classes in anatomy, pharmacology and basic patient skills along with other courses that pertain to the field. The final portion of the certificate program has you participate in clinical education where you’ll get your first chance to work in the field. Many of our graduates receive their first job offers while completing their clinical education even before taking the national certification exam.
