2-06-1996. First road game on Magic's return schedule. NOT the game where Van Exel pushed the ref, that was in April. Incidentally, I have that game, too. Will do it eventually. This game was joined in progress (by accident of original recorder) and had a turrible buzzing/humming, which is why I didn't bother doing it a decade ago when I did a bunch of 96 Magic gms in a row. I got it pretty good tho, you can still hear it, but I'm better at editing audio now than I was then.

95-96 was great to see Magic played on the floor. They have no chemistry problems with each other. It was sad they couldn’t beat Rockets in the playoffs

They lost to the rockets because the chemistry was eventually messed up.

Magic’s comeback was exactly what destroyed the team’s chemistry

Seeing this video of Magic's first road game after his comeback got me thinking about a video I saw on Magic a few years ago which leads me to this question for the uploader and anyone who reads this...What Would Have Happened If Magic Didn't Have To Retire In November/1991?? We can look at this video and see that Magic was still very good even though he had missed the previous 4 seasons. Magic was playing at an MVP level during his last full season in 1990-1991(as he developed a strong post up game to go along with the spectacular point guard skills), and he led the Lakers to the 1991 Finals. It's entirely possible that Magic would have remained an elite player through the mid 90's at least, and the Lakers could have won more titles. Despite being in his early 30's in 1991, Magic was still going strong, unlike guys like Bird, Isiah, McHale and others who fell off in 1991 due to injuries and age.

I was a fan when he retired in 91. It's not him that was the prob, it was the team. I think 92 and 93 would've been good years for the Lakers, but I don't think they would've been able to beat CHI. Same probs existed in 92/3 that did in 91. Note that Magic DID attempt a comeback in the 1992/93 season on an every-other-game schedule, but Malone messed that up by sayin he didn't want to play with him due to the risk. Had Magic never gotten HIV, I think he would've naturally retired in 1993/94 after the team around him was so clearly done. Maybe he would've retired in 93 or maybe in 95, even, but I've always suspected 94 if nothing else changed but whether he was there or not. He did play in the 92/3 preseason and I have the first gm of that on my chan (vs POR at Hawaii, I up'd it in 2009). They were looking good, but it was all for nothin. So I'm a NO on "would they have beaten the Bulls if Magic didn't retire in 91?"

@@nonplayerzealot4 yeah true, if Magic didn't get HIV and could have played out his entire career after 1990-1991, the Lakers probably weren't going to beat Jordan's Bulls because the Bulls were just too strong in every aspect of the game, but I'm guessing the Lakers would have remained a 55-60 win team through at least 93-94 because Magic showed no signs of slowing down at 31. Maybe the Lakers would have returned to the Finals in 1992 and/or 1993 and been the one Finals opponent to push the Bulls to 7 games. Remember the Lakers came VERY close to going up 2-1 in the 1991 Finals, Jordan had to save the day to force OT in Game 3 at the Forum, the Bulls went on to win in overtime and never looked back. The Lakers run through the Western Conference playoffs in 1991(which was a lot tougher than what they faced in the 1980's) showed me that they would have been hard to eliminate in future years with Magic leading them. The Lakers also had the frontcourt guys to neutralize/contain the likes of Shawn Kemp, Barkley, Olajuwon, Karl Malone and David Robinson, the players and teams who would go on to win/dominate the Western Conference in the years following Magic's retirement.

Thank you! If you have any more 1996 Magic besides the games you’ve already posted I’d appreciate it.
