*NOTE: skip to 10:10 for Robert Horry's in and out game winning miss
May 13th, 2003
SBC Center
San Antonio, TX
Boxscore: www.basketball-reference.com/b...
The glamorous Los Angeles Lakers had won 3 consecutive championships. But ask any Laker fan on why the 4th never happened, 2 things will come into mind: Horry's in and out miss on a potential game winner and the Laker's lethargic play in the 2nd half of Game 6 that advanced the San Antonio Spurs into the WCF and ultimately the championship. What people forget about Horry's heartbreaker in Game 5 of the 2003 Western Conference Semifinals was Kobe Bryant's all around brilliance that set up the stage.
It appeared as if the San Antonio Spurs would run the Los Angeles Lakers out of the building who exploded out of the gate. The Lakers were 0-5 in the Spur's new home, the SBC Center. No matter what the Spurs did, nothing was wrong tonight. Tony Parker was unstoppable as Tim Duncan dominated the paint. The Laker offense was smothered by the Spur defense while every shot that went up in the Spur offense went through the net. The Spurs put past memories behind them as they led by as many as 25 in the 3rd quarter. But one roadblock stood in their way - Kobe Bryant. Bryant was not ready to give up Game 5 that easily.
Bryant sparked his team by knocking down 2 threes to end the 3rd quarter to bring the game to 16. Then it was Kobe time in the 4th quarter. Sensing that his team needed him more than ever, Bryant took the game into his own hands. In the 4th quarter, Bryant either scored or assisted on 7 of the 11 baskets by the Lakers. Bringing the crowd into disbelief, Bryant hit every crucial basket when his team needed it to cap off an important run. He led the Lakers to an 18-5 run to bring the game within 4 points, 90-86. He hit another three point shot to bring the game to 95-91. After Shaq connected on a three point play and Stephen Jackson made 1 of 2 free throws, the stage was set for Horry's potential game winner. It was only a 2 point game and Bryant had faked out Bowen in the corner. But instead of taking the three point shot, he unselfishly passed it out to the open Robert Horry who had a line of postseason game winners a mile long. He could've easily taken the game winner himself given how hot he was in the 4th quarter. But this time Horry's shot went in - and out again, giving the Spurs the 96-94 win. The Lakers never recovered from that miss in Game 6. The Spurs proceeded to blow out the Lakers in the next game giving them the series victory and the NBA championship.

I've said it many times...but Horry's miss was the symbolic end of the Lakers' dynasty. There isn't a person who watched that game who didn't think that shot was going in. The Lakers steal that game, it would've been just like 2004 was when the Spurs were dead men walking for that Gm 6. Instead, they got their reprieve and put the Lakers away. This was the last stand. 2004 was not the true representation of the 3x champs...too many pieces were gone. This game...that moment, that was the end of the dynasty.

The 3 biggest "what if" in game moments over the last 17 years in Lakers History are: 1. This 2. Kobe's 3 that hit back-iron at the end of game 1 vs Dallas in the 2011 western conference semifinals 3. The end of game 6 vs the Suns in 2006. One rebound away from playing the clippers (THE CLIPPERS) for a spot in the western conference finals. This moment is so fascinating because of the consequences. 4 peat on the line, and first team since Magic's Lakers to make 4 straight NBA finals. You have to find it plausible that the Lakers had a serious shot at winning the ring that year. They wouldve manhandled New Jersey, not really sure about Dallas but that was the year the Mavs gave up a 26 point lead in the 4th quarter to LA. Regardless, I think Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot captured my feelings 100% spot on. The end of a dynasty :( The worst part: he made the same exact shot 2 years later vs detroit. SAME EXACT SHOT. Game 6 really just was a formality. Seeing dfish and kobe crying at the end of the bench was unreal on live TV. Also, do shaq and kobe reconcile if this shot goes in and LA wins a 4th ring? Because Kobe definitely passed up the shot at the game winning 3 (and what looks like a serious shot at a foul given that Bruce basically jumped in the air). Instead, he chose to make the right "basketball play" and pass to a wide-open Horry. He gets knocked a lot for being a ballhog, but when it comes time to winning, he's (usually) thinking above his individual stats (although game 2 vs Magic in 2009 Finals is a notable exception, along with game 7 2006 vs Suns).

Paras Kumar I think the 2011 team was on borrowed time. Dallas still wins that series...it just goes a little longer. I actually think they would've beaten the Clippers in '06, crazy as that seems. As individual moments, I agree with you. I do think a bigger what if in terms of the bigger picture is what if the Lakers held on against Boston in Gm 4 of the '08 Finals. Maybe it just goes seven and they get smoked both games in Beantown, but they really blew a great chance.

if horry made that shot they likely 5 peat.....but don't count out duncan winning game 6 and 7 in 2003....he was the mvp....but maybe his teamates are demoralized after losing that lead in game 5 so they lose?....kobe and shaq wouldnt ignore each other in the 2004 finals if they won in 2003....if they won 4 straight 2004 would have been theirs...shaq after they lost in 2003 was already planning on leaving in 2004 and kobe wanted him gone ...this loss ended their dynasty

Nobody Touches Jordan The Mavs had no frontcourt to deal with shaq but the lakers had literally no answer for Nash and Dirk at that time. Those Lakers teams achilles heel was defending the pick and roll, and the pick and roll was what that Mavs team excelled at better than anyone in the league. Had Ginobili not crashed into Dirk's knee that year, the Mavs are likely the champs. Said all that to say don't be so sure the Lakers would've 4peated if that shot went in.
@estherlee5527

If that shot had gone in, there are no guarantees that LA would have beaten SA in games 6 or 7. But make no mistake, had the Lakers advanced, the Mavs had a slim chance of beating LA. The regular season games give us a good indication in this case of how this matchup would have gone and LA even without hitting their stride early in the season managed to beat Dallas once and once they did their hit their stride, beat the Mavs both times late in the season. The only chance they would have had to steal the series from LA is someone else other than Nash and Nowitzki going off, specifically I am looking at you Nick Van Exel to pull off what you did against Seattle in 1995 again.

thats what la gets though for not only rellying on old man brian shaw still but not also bringing in someone for samaki walker who was washed that year to help horry at pf minutes wise and shaq at center with his injury and no wing depth to help them with their big man inside issues despite knowing that fox was aging and kobe was playing too many minutes and d fish and shaq were getting worse by 2003...la kinda messed up cause in 2002 they got lucky due to refs and horry and thought that starting lineup was going to carry them another season...it did not...remember in 2002 la did not use their bench much...meaning fisher fox horry for role players had a lot of minutes on their bodies that season and playoffs so going into 2002-2003 with shaq out they had to play a lot more then they wanted and their bench sucked in 2002 and 2003....the roster kept getting worse..luckily devean george developed or else they really would of had issues in 2003 and 2004....like they got rid of a.c. green who helped horry a lot and they lost ron harper who helped fisher out a lot in 2001 due to his injury plus horrace grant tyronn lue isaiah rider obviously glen rice but he was a necessary loss and before that eddie jones nick van exel and mike penberthy for no reason but kept bums like mark madsen samaki walker around for some reason and pre 2002 devean george and guys like greg foster or 2001 slava took a roster spot from possible wings they could of had for the future...la made some mistakes with their roster it felt like as the 6 some of shaw shaq horry fisher kobe fox played together since 1999 and were older by 2003 and 5 of them played together since 1997...and george was a rookie in 1999-2000 so he barley played

Both Spurs and the Lakers had lucky breaks in 2003 and 2004. Spurs escaped because of Horry's in and out miss and in 04 the Lakers escaped because of Fisher's 0.4 second shot. Also, May 13, was the same day both of these things happened.

You know the Spurs got lucky this year. That's a shot Robert Horry has always made throughout his career. Had that gone in and Lakers go up 3-2, we definitely would have put them away at home, go on to beat Dallas in the Conference Finals, and then beat the Nets again just like the year before for a 4-peat. The next year may have even gone different too.

robert horry's career was all about clutch shots...why do u think they called him 'big shot bob'? also he made a similar shot the year before against sacramento, and all the teams he's played on he's made clutch shots for them when they desperately needed them. kobe passing to him was the better option, he had a clean shot but just got a little unlucky

robbereal1982 very true, but the idea of clutch isn't necessarily about hitting any and every big shot......when a team wins, fans, pundits and teammates remember the big shots than they do the numerous misses, especially if those shots have been key to championships, and not just regular season games. nobody shoots close to 100 percent, its more about putting the ball in the hands of someone who u know isn't scared to hit or miss, and the person has that same confidence in himself as well

As soon as Horry took that shot everyone in the building and watching knew it was going in. He had just made so many of those shots you assumed he would never miss in those situations. If he hits that shot there is no doubt in my mind the Lakers win that series and win a 4th straight title. There was a certain sense of invincibility and inevitability when it came to that team. No matter how grim the situation looked there would always be some unforeseen circumstances that would allow them to win. That died when that Horry shot didn’t go down.

If Robert Horry hit's his Game Winning Attempt, Lakers up 3-2, could close out the Series at home. If they were to win against the Mavericks in the WCF is another thing, but they certainly could have beaten the Nets in the Finals. If he hits this, the chance for the 4Peat is there, if Malone doesn't get injured in 2004, 5Peat arguably. Who knows if Shaq would have left with a Chase for the 6th Ring, and that with Kobe's Prime coming up. They really could have been a dynasty.
