i started working at a body repair shop 3weeks ago. i love it! today, an experienced body man told me that "metal has memory". Wild thing to try and comprehend since i dont watch him from beginning to end reshaping a quarter panel or whatever. i just see how the car was when damaged and the after work. Amazing work fasure!!!!!!

I do this for a living. I love seeing someone post this type of video for the normal ignorant consumer to see. I don't mean that negatively, i just use the word ignorant as it is defined as in people don't have the knowledge of. They call us mechanics because we work on cars. We are auto collision technicians, not mechanics. Totally different ball game than turning wrenches. This is just one part of what we do. I hope this can appeal to some youth and get them into the industry. Kiddos, you can get in the industry and and with determination and drive, you can learn from guys like this and be making $100k/year no problem. Too bad society makes us collision techs look like dirt bags and people look down on us. If I could go back i would still be a body tech. So rewarding and always a new experience on every job. From taking doors apart and removing a handle to pulling a frame and getting it from 30 mm out of spec back to within 3mm, this career is highly underrated. Society makes you think 4-6 years of college is a must and $80k in debt from loans. And if you don't then you failed. You can drive a $70k truck and buy a home faster in this profession than you can if you go to school to be an attorney. By the time i was 28 I bought a house and had it half paid off and was making over $60/hour because i was working 100% flat rate (commission) I'm now 43 and started my own collision center and we are close to doing $250k/month in business. That's approximately $30k/month of pure profit for ownership. Don't conform to society BS. Pick a trade for a career if you can and IT WILL PAY OFF. People love seeing you try and they will help you if they see you putting on the effort.

Your videos helped me repair a hard rear corner hit on my sons car. I was able to get the car drivable in roughly three weeks of nights and weekends. I had to improvise on a pulling system to get the quarter panel nearly straight as it was wrapped around the trunk area. I do weld and fabricate some and have auto body experience from way back. The rear bumper was in several pieces and stitched together and still holding for three years. He leaves for college next month and I will finally get a chance to finish the primer repair this fall.

The re priming fills the previous sand scratches. After block sanding, you usually don't have much left to finish sand or get it to a fine grit that can be painted over. If that doesn't help ask more ?s :)

Newer appraiser here and wanting to learn how repairs are done to better perform my job. What’s the repair time on a QP job such as this? 4.0? 6.0?
@LakesideAutobody8 ай бұрын
The door was replaced - probably get about 2 hours for that. Dents like this one get quite a bit of time because it's subjective. 4-6 hours is about right for the quarter dent. I never wrote estimates - body man - so I can only give you an idea or ball park figure. They do have software or crash books to give accurate times - not sure where to find one though. These videos are on cars that will be sold - they're clean title repairable vehicles from auctions or rust bucket trucks that have low miles :)

Great ?. That's one of those things that come with doing it a few times. The main goal when starting to use the cheese grater is to just knock it down a bit to make sanding the filler easier. Hello from New York and a really quick question please. Just had my 2021 Dodge Durango repaired at a Geico express body shop. I had a collision with a deer that damaged my driver side door. When I got the car back I noticed that The door sounds hollow. When I tap on it with my knuckles it is obviously hollow and sounds like an empty can. The passenger side door does not make the sound at all. Do you have any idea what the body shop did or did not do to cause this empty sound?
@LakesideAutobody Жыл бұрын
Usually there is sound deadening material, foam blocks, thin gauge plastic under the inner door panel, etc. glued/stuck to the inside to eliminate the hollow sound and road noise. If that stuff was damaged in the accident, or damaged replacing the door they may have carelessly left it out and hoped to get away with it. It's sort of common. Good luck and let me know if you get it resolved.
@gm1937 Жыл бұрын

I have to work on my car outside currently, and can only do it on the weekends. Will a primer surfacer protect against rust in the meantime if it gets rained on or something?
@LakesideAutobody2 жыл бұрын
It will be fine. Don't park it in the shade - park it somewhere that it can get a breeze and/or in the sun shine so it can stay as dry as possible. I've left lacquer primed panels outside months at times and never ran into any issues. If you see rust showing through, etc. then you'll want to hit it with the DA real quick and prime again before continuing :)

Hi Jerry. Awesome awesome job. Question: how long does auto paint or primer last if they aren't opened or mixed and sealed in the can from the manufacturer? What if you used a little out of the can, but sealed the can appropriately afterwards for both paint and primer?
@LakesideAutobody2 жыл бұрын
At one shop I worked at there were cans of paint in the paint room that must have been 5-10 years old or more. I'm thinking quite a long time - my dad had some real old stuff on the shelves too that I would open and mix with other paint to change the color just a bit to try and match better. I really never found a can with hardened paint in it. Hope that helps a bit - that's been my experience at least :)

@@LakesideAutobody I'm retired military. Retired after 20 years as a fleet mechanic. Half of my service I served in the Army and my other half I served in the Air Force. Only time I messed with any body work was a time we had a fleet of HUMMWV we had come in. Hand me down vehicles from another unit. 😁 The hoods had some damage to them . Cracks/holes. Hoods were fiber glass so we used fiber glass repair kits. Time consuming but not as complicated as the work you guys do on these videos. In the Air Force part of my training in the shop included some body shop work. The name of the body shop section was called Allied Trades. Did some refresher welding with oxygen and acetylene. We had this mounted on our wrecker when we would go out to the field in the Army. I have always been a little nervous around welding with this stuff. Always thought it would blow up on me. Dont recall using tig/mig welder but they had this as well. This was around 2006. Good times.

Put a j hook thru the hole and pull it out. Everybody wants to start welding on tabs right away and using a torch. Next you will start tearing metal and have a freaking mess The body line isn't going to come out if the dent isn't pulled out first

Usually using a j hook like that will cause further damage or tear metal that's why you use tabs, shims or even sheets of metal - to spread out the pulling area.

@@LakesideAutobody I sometimes use a stud gun, line up the pins close and use a moclamp and a Morgan knocker to pull body lines. A lot less heat introduced on the sheet metal. Just saying

They total them instantly now - the cost of parts, paint, labor, etc is silly :)

Why not a glue gun with tabs.
@jonathanyates5198 Жыл бұрын
Glue would fail trying to pull all of that metal. Would only work on flat areas
