Halifax, Nova Scotia is cruise destination that has plenty to offer in terms of food, drink and attraction. On my classic New England and Canada cruise on the Caribbean Princess, my friend Don ‪@Donsfamilyvacations‬ and I faced a common cruise dilemma. Cruise excursion or explore on our own. We choose the later. Here's out day.

Just FYI, the Halifax Citadel is a National Park now, not an active base. The soldiers are just actors :). If you ever go to Quebec city, the citadel there is still an active military base

Halifax is one of my favorite ports. On your next visit, try to walk around in the public gardens and the old cemetery. Headstones have interesting art. Gardens close to Citadel, so easy to stop there. A pull up to the gardens from the terminal, but downhill after that. One time we were able to tour a Spanish tall ship that was in the harbor.

No, Sir, no Titanic survivors were brought to Halifax; only her dead. The cemetery you passed while on the Harbour Hopper, is The Old Burying Ground, which was the original cemetery for the city, dating back to 1749. It closed in 1844. The Titanic victims are buried in 3 cemeteries -- Baron de Hirsch Jewish cemetery (10 buried there) in the city's north end, Fairview Lawn non-denominational Cemetery (121 buried) in the north end and abutting the Jewish one, and Mount Olivet Catholic cemetery (19 buried) in the west end.

@greybeardhfx 22 күн бұрын
Sorry, just some minor corrections. The last person interred in the Old Burial Ground was in 1844, long before the Titanic. The victims of that sinking are buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery (121), Mount Olivet (19), and Baron de Hirsh (10), all some distance from the downtown. Also Fort George atop the Citadel is a National Historic Site and the soldiers you see in 19th Century attire are reenactors.

Nice! My first and so far only cruise (another is booked!) was Canada/NE on Princess in Oct. I loved each port and booked no excursions. In Halifax, I loved the Maude Lewis galleries in the art museum. She was a folk artist and had a small cottage in Halifax that she painted all over. The entire little house is in the museum and it is wonderful. Then i went to the beautiful Public Garden (I love parks), had some seafood chowder at a restaurant, and explored the walk along the harbor. Great day. I walked past the Citadel and Maritime Museum but didnt make it inside either.

Love Halifax. We honeymooned there 35 years ago. At that time, we didn't know anything about the munitions accident that fairly leveled part of the city. Did you know every year Halifax sends a Christmas tree to Boston to thank them for their assistance after the accident? Such a beautiful waterfront that continue to wow. So many amazing places to pause for a lobster roll or libation. We took the ferry last September: beautiful vistas and a quaint town on the other side. Thanks for the video, Tony!

We have been to Halifax as a cruise stop quite a few times now. We always walked off and did our own thing. We did do the duck boat tour one year which was fun. We have walked up to the citadel fortress to see the views and check out the museum inside. We watched them fire off the cannon at noon. Nearby the port is Alexander Keith's Brewery which is a fun kitschy place to visit. Another trip, we rented a car and drove up to visit Peggy's Cove on our own.
