Dude, as a rider who has had a few birthday, two words: Body Armor. They make hip pads, knee pads, shin guards and a jacket/shirt that has a whole bunch of armor built into it. From first hand experience, this armor has saved me from some major pain.

We feel your pain, Bobo. Seriously. The thing this 50+ yr old rider learned VERY recently, when jumping my e-bike off an MTB Hopper Coach ramp on its lowest set-up without knee/shin pads because, hey, I've been ramping since I was 10, is that the 6-inch long gash on my shin that kept me off my bike for a week and ruined my leg-modeling career could have EASILY been prevented by the pads I left in the garage. F*** me for thinking I had it. P.S., That hip bruise of yours looks DEEP, man.

I literally gave up biking of all sorts when I found out about my deployment. Now I'm here, riding an Ozark Trail 29'er.... (Stateside deployment) and can't wait to get home to my Capra. I've reeled in my risk taking since my bad wreck on Greens Lick. Kinda a wakeup call because like you were saying, I have to be able to provide for my family. National Guard doesn't have light duty if I get injured.

I just turned 63 earlier this week, and after 5 years without any big crashes, I've managed to crash big time twice this season already. The most recent was just earlier today. I have been very lucky to have had several years of martial arts training, because knowing how to fall to the point that is is muscle memory has saved me from serious injuries many times. I hope you heal up quickly and well.

I’m 62 and crash all the time . I just get back up and keep going. 3 years and I had a similar crash off a drop as steep as the one you crashed. I was 59 at the time. Drove home by myself rested overnight in the morning got on my spin bike to loosen up my body . Went riding the next day. Oh what your body looked like mine was just as bad and remember I was 20 years older than you. I would like to send you a video of my crash . It has made its way around the internet. My first thought is Bobo going to take up golf and make videos with Paul? In 1985 I was 31 and decided I wanted to race motocross in Alaska! Bought a Honda CR500. A few months in I was at a bike park in Anchorage and crashed on a big gap jump and broke my right humerus. My pregnant wife wasn't very impressed. Six weeks later to the day I hopped on my bike and broke my arm again. Sandy was eating dinner when I walked in the door and said she wasn't taking me to the emergency room until after she finished dinner. Next day she bought me velcro sneakers and pants! I am 68 now and still hitting jumps! Love your videos. Take care of yourself and your family Bobo!

At 55 I've cut back to only a few races/events per season instead of 40+/season spread over MTB(XC), BMX, CX, Road, and Track. At some point you just have nothing left to prove to yourself although currently I'm working on jumping just enough to clear fairly tame jumps instead of casing - mostly because casing seems way more dangerous. Stay healthy so you can take that kid out to get some trail-a-bike action in a few years! We did a lot of single track with those

Glad you're on your path to healing BOBO! And congratulations about your new baby on the way! I know what you mean by thinking that once you've done a feature you can do it again. I crashed about 3 weeks ago doing a big drop too. For some DUMB reason, my feet were level as I took off, but then my left foot went down just before I landed and with the compression of the bike, both my feet came off the pedals. Then I lost control and hit a tree. The back of my saddle smashed into my pelvic area and caused a bunch of bruising and a hematoma that's taking forever to go away. It looked very much like all your bruises, just in the front! Take care!

Dude. You've found a great niche. You ride well (mostly 😂), and have a gift with your creativity. It's real easy to think about quitting at times especially after an accidental like this. I had an OTB several years ago with an impact similar to the one you took with Paul and the recovery sucked. Risk management plus your creativity equals you being able to do this as long as you want!

I fell off my bike and broke my shoulder when my daughter was around 6 weeks old. For about 8 weeks I couldnt really pick her up and put her down like I should have been able to, it was also a nightmare for my missus who had to do everything with barely any help from me. She was understanding about it all at the time but damn do I wish that never happened. Having a baby definitely makes you rethink things but a child would prefer to have a Dad who is active and full of life than one sitting in a bar boozing and getting fat. Love your content. keep it up.

About 13 years ago, I broke my shoulder on a single track downhill. I have 4 kids, and hung up the mountain bike, and did road trips with the kids (I was 41) to make sure I kept myself safe for the sake of raising them. Road biking just didn't have the same luster and didn't last. Now I am about to launch kid number 3. My youngest is 14, and wants to learn to mountain bike... And tbh so do I (again). So much has changed over nearly a decade and a half, it is insane. Anyway, by spring I damned well better be in shape, because the kid deserves those experiences, and I'd like to share them. Anyway, my hindsight may be take less risk, but don't give it up. Your kid will want to bike with Dad. Good luck man, take care
@djberg3483
@djberg3483 11 ай бұрын
Damn man, gnarlier than just seeing it. Now dad tip, to the newbie dad, you live in hippievile, go get a swaddle or 6, this will be your saving grace with the new mini human. Reason being is the kid will be compressed, and that is what it knows as a safe place(womb simulator scenario). So when kid wakes up pissed off, mama has had no sleep, and you want a happy mama? Swaddle, swing, and wispy sounds, it simulates the womb and a place it knows is safe. Defenses dropped, kid falls back to sleep, mama gets more sleep, and then she’s not a sleep deprived psycho-zombie the next day. Happy wife, Happy life, and sleep with be the key for all of you. Congrats on the mini human creation.

I've been mountain biking since 19 and 87 youngster. Crashing back then hurt but we could bounce back up. Now, at 57 and still mountain biking, I don't bounce well. I wear a lot of body armor, knee, elbow, chest, back, shoulder, hip and coccyx. Yes its a lot but I bounce better. I can move really well with the gear I have. The crash does look epic, though. I use to do the same move for drops. Used to call that method an “English Hop”. What I do now is to quickly push the bike forward. Only need a small movement. The speed of the snap will keep the front up longer. If you miss the timing, at least your bike further in front, so gives you a little more room to screw up and make a bad landing. It does with for jumps, but ends up squashing the jump.
@avlehtine

Was about to say the same thing. The push if going slow or to a flat-ish landing, otherwise just the "Lee Likes Bikes" style getting super low and letting the nose drop.

Dude I got 10 weeks off work, paid, when I had my son. The thing was I could use it all at once or use it in 2 week chunks for up to a year of the birth. I decided to save 2 weeks at the very end and use it just for me and go MTB riding as much as I could. Day 1: I went out to the local bike park and rode the downhill jump trail. I walked it. I slow rolled it and took the B-Line for an hour. Then I started to jump things. One by one I cleared things at the right speed and I felt like I could put it into a flow and go for it without killing the flow. Well 3 jumps into the line theres a gap4 feet long that drops to a bowl 10 feet deep then a step-up on the other side. I over cleared the gap and landed in the flat. I decided I didn't have the speed to clear the next step-up but the bowl was actually just kind of cut into the hill so instead of coming to a stop I tried to bypass it so I could walk back to the top and try again with less speed. Unfortunately when I veered off to bypass, I was off trail and because it was Fall oak leaves were all over the ground. My breaks locked and my tire hit them so I started to surf down the slope with way too much speed. Don't worry, nature had my back. I couldn't stop but an Oak tree was right there to help but I was still going about 10-15 MPH. As Seth would say; SMASH!!! I ended up breaking every rib on the side of my body that hit the tree. Long story short, I loaded my bike and drove back home with like 8 broken ribs. My wife was pissed! I was supposed to help her with our 1 year old for my last 2 weeks off work but now I was laid up. In all adventure sports we assume risk but I think thats what makes it fun. Bones heal, skin grows back and on the brightside I have a great story to tell several years later.

63 and riding. I were hip pads, shin pads and gloves on every ride. I don’t like elbow pads but I have started wearing them more often. I ride with a camelback and that’s saved me more then once. Crashed last weekend on a trail I have ridden a 100 times. Few scrapes but those hip pads worked like a charm. I also wear full face all the time since my buddy did a low speed crash over a curb and now has scars like Tom Beringer in Platoon. He was wearing a half shell.

I have a 9 month and just wrecked my right (dominant) hand. I can't do much one handed so, like you, my wife is now taking care of me AND the poop machine. It sucks not being able to interact with the charmer like I would if I wasn't injured and I can already hear the wife still bringing this up in 2043. Definitely makes me ponder whether it's time to move the 'acceptable level of risk' threshold. Also, wiping with the left hand feels funky.

Interestingly, I had an almost identical fall off about a week ago! Same thing - a drop off I'd ridden more than 30 times then just got it wrong - front wheel dropped and catapulted me over the bars. Broken ribs, punctured lung and 3 days in hospital. Fortunately, I'm on the mend but lucky not to be more badly hurt. Incidents like that make you question what you're doing and re-evaluate why you're doing it. It might be sometime before I go back to that drop. I'm only 58 years old so that's probably why you got off so lightly! Get well soon! And please share your mental recovery journey!

I haven't seen a hip like that since my crash in 1997 on a steep, rocky descent. I had ridden this section many times, but one early morning around 6:30, things wouldn't go as planned. I clipped a large rock with my front wheel, pitching myself straight onto a slab on my left, and lights out. I have no idea how long I was unconscious, but when I came to, my bike was another 30' down the trail from where I laid. When I tried to get up, the pain was so excruciating, I blacked out again. I came to thinking my hip was broken, drug myself to my bike, and barely was able to get up on one leg without blacking out a second time. Needless to say, it took me 2 hrs to go 1 mile back to my truck to get home. Luckily my hip wasn't broken, but my left side was black and purple from my knee up to my armpit. Get better, but pay attention to your body, even if you feel 100%, give it another week or two to fully recover. My injury took 3 months for me, before I could ride again.

the moral of the story. maybe these could have prevented all injurys: - Leatt protector-Shorts Impact 3DF 5.0 - POC VPD Air Sleeve and when we at it. - Leatt Airflex breastplate - Endura MT500 Lite I dont get why people dont wear arm sleeves or impact shorts. Just a small slip up with 5mph and you scrap your whole arms and hips. the light stuff does the job, for a intermediate rider you dont need the high end motorcross protection armor with neckbrace still nothing wrong with it. if you are scared after this crash. Buy some protectors, they will give you the confidence to send it again.

47 here. I hit a big jump at NorthStar last month; my right foot slipped off the pedal, and I landed the jump without crashing on my left foot. Felt a sharp pain in my lower back. Kept riding anyway but later ended up with an annular tear in my S1-L5. I could have used a walker myself. It's depressing because I ride 2-3 times per week. It's my social outlet. I remember when you broke your collarbone. This shit sucks, but I am motivated to get better to ride again.

2 weeks ago on Sunday I had my very first brutal crash, ended up with 3 cracked ribs, a few deep abrasions and lots of bruises. Surprisingly, I have spent countless hours thinking what could I have done to avoid flying over the bars, not a second of that time I spent thinking whether or not I should quit riding bikes. I think it's needless to say; Don't let that discourage you!

Literally broke my collar bone last week on a regular ass road ride and my hip looks just like yours lol. It's crazy how fast things can go south even when you're doing something you do on a daily basis. I broke my clavicle at an enduro race when my son was barely 2. Felt horrible to not be able to pick him up or help my wife at all. I get it. Its hard to remember that its not just me out there when the adrenaline is going, but its important to know that my injuries now hurt my family. I cant imagine how hard it must be to have it tied to income, hope you heal up and stay safe out there.

48, broke my back and had my spine fused. I haven't ridden in about 7 months now. It's not because I'm not interested, but the crashes just hurt so much more now. I just don't take the same risks I used to because I have a family to take care. I can't afford to be injured. Hope you heal quickly and wear pads next time man.

As you get into your 40s as a rider, your ego tends to settle down too. So the drive to "send it" matters less for most. A lot (not all of course) of these falls come from that desire to "progress" or keep up with the bros sending it. Being a new Dad in my 40's, I find that it's not difficult to still ride hard and have fun, but dial it back from the truly risky stuff - though ultimately, MTB is inherently dangerous. Still, there's definitely a happy medium to keep on shredding. The bigger challenge Bobo will be time! Once that baby is born, your time to ride will just be way less - though it is helpful to live around a bunch of trails. Still worth it though! Heal up.

I didn’t start riding until I was 30 and quickly learned how dangerous it can be as in my first 2mo of riding I not only dislocated and fractured my pinky but 2 weeks later fractured my left elbow. First time in my life I’d broken anything aside from my nose. A couple more broken bones (one resulting in surgery) and I’m almost 32 now and just got back from whistler for the first time. I’ve got 3 kids and will continue to ride but I’ve learned a lot from my crashes. I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon and will keep pushing my self towards larger features but in the back of my mind is that constant fear that I’m putting not just myself but them at risk. Crazy things we do for the things we’re passionate about I guess. Ps. Zero crashes in 2023 so far, hoping to keep it that way

Just got back from an enduro race earlier today. Didn't pre-ride, didn't wear body armor, didn't wear a full face helmet. What a mistake. It rained hard and the rocks were covered in slippery algae slime. The E-Bikes made the course even more sketchy. Had a bad crash on one of the stages. Lucky I didn't break my my face off. The half shell saved me, but it was over matched. After my soft injuries heal... face. Anytime I do enduro it will be with a full face, body armor, and a pre-ride. FYI...I'm 55.

It is funny that I found this video of a wipeout while recovering from the same kind of wipe out a week ago. Nice to see I am not the only older guy that falls and beats him self up as I am just getting back in to biking as it is something I do with my son. If you know where I can find some body armour shirts I would love to get a like for them.

I still love mtb-ing. I just don’t do the silly drop shit anymore. Pre, Re, then Free ride = yes. But like jcreeker says below, swallow the frickin pride & ride get properly armored up, bro. I'm 52, broken somewhere in the ballpark of 25+ bones (sorta lost count over the years), still have a titanium plate on one collarbone, dislocated a hip {btw, not all of these were biking accidents...but I play hard in every sport} & all of these make an older dude get up a little more anxious after a crash to see what's still working. The young punks w/no experience might think it's uncool to wear the pads, but I can out ride most of them & regardless of that, I have a job that I've got to do to pay for all my toys & epic trips. Wearing protection won't stop you from crashing, or insure you won't get hurt, but it'll drastically reduce the potential damage. Good luck w/the little-one-on-the-way, & keep riding, dude!

Enjoy your videos. Tease one of my long time biking friends with the e mtb fun- at 54 I am a convert after being a hater 😂. So my main sport is Motocross- I train with mtb( 30 years). Healing up from a broken arm- motocross- plate/screws. Other arm 2 years back. I started Moto at 50 and love it- trying to speed my recovery to get back at it. Thoughts of quitting as The downtime sucks- this happens with most injuries 😂. Far less glamorous ways of injuring one self - I work at a hospital in a surgery area- people fall stepping off a curb and break their arm. Whenever injured I try to recover as quickly as possible- no crying- do the therapy full blast ; so I can minimize the inconvenience on my family/work. These activities are my choice and I believe great motivation to keep my health optimized. Like a friend said “ I would rather have an ortho appointment then a cardiac one”.

I’m 47 and have ridden motocross since I was four, also ride MTB to cross-train for MX. Broke my foot last week on the MX bike, which resulted in surgery. I work freelance as a Director of Photography, I pretty much can’t work for at least two months. I have had too many injuries and caused too much stress on my family to keep riding motocross. I’m actually giving that up and ONLY doing MTB now. It’s all relative on what we perceive is dangerous.
